if this was called ‘eloquent fashion’ and was by a guy called bustin queefer with 200 monthly listeners it would have an 80+ user score
This album is really interesting and experimental compared to most albums, but I feel like there was more room to go all in on creating a unique record here, something more like the last album I reviewed, 'Playing Robots Into Heaven' by James Blake. Having the likes of Sampha on the album made up for this wasted potential however, as the vocal range of Sampha in particular helped to create more variation between tracks, but overall still lacked when compared with what could've been. That being ... read more
Listening to James Blake on Travis songs and listening to a James Blake album couldn't be much further apart in terms of pretty much everything. I say pretty much as the only similarity I see between the two is that they are both fucking beautiful. I'm mainly a fan of rap, with R&B and jazz as some other genres I tend to enjoy, but this album is outside of my normal taste and I think I can now say I'm a fan of whatever genre it is, if you can even put it into one singular category. One ... read more
This album is something really special. Getting such an emotional insight to one of the rappers I'd want to piss off the least is something I really didn't expect coming into the album. Hearing Conway open up about his mental struggles on 'Stressed' hit very hard, as seeing someone as so tough and untouchable then instantly seeing their vulnerability makes me think twice about how I judge people. Losing a baby at birth, being shot in the head and being paralysed on one side of your face, being ... read more
I don't know if the people giving Love Sick sub-50 ratings listened to the wrong album or something, but I really enjoyed it and I think it's Don's most focused piece of work to date. There were clear influences throughout the album, maybe except the tracks 'Private Landing (feat. Justin Bieber & Future)' and 'Bus Stop (feat. Brent Faiyaz)' both of which felt like commercial breaks to an otherwise consistent episode of Don's life. I feel like I'm in that diner with Don when I listen and I ... read more
I wanna whip my lovin' on this album, because it's an actual good body of work from an artist with an UNREAL amount of haters. Everyone knows that Jack Harlow is never going to make anything close to what his comparitive Eminem did in terms of legacy and status in hip-hop, but this album is a step in a very good direction for Jack. His vulnerability shows which is something he's never really been too open to talk about, especially on the tracks 'Denver' and 'Blame On Me', both of which make me ... read more
Call me Korean, because Ho Lee Phuk this album is good. GZA one of my favourite Wu-Tang artists (ODB is king) and this piece of work is definitely the reason why. The concept and story is perfect, the flows and lyrics are immense, the beats are so undeniably Wu-Tang. Everything just comes together in one big melting pot and made the album I know and love. At least once a week I exclaim "DUEL OF THE IRON MIC, IT'S THE 52 FATAL STRIKES (UUH)" for no apparent reason. Rest in peace to the ... read more
I decided I wanted to start listening to IDK on the 4th of May 2023, not knowing that F65 was dropping at midnight in the USA. After listening to the first and second iterations of 'IDK & FRIENDS' I watched the interview that he did with Zane Lowe about the album, now knowing it would drop at midnight in the USA. Then I was looking at his discography at midnight in the UK, and the glorious F65 was there, right before my eyes, in all its glory. Understanding the concept and motives of the ... read more
I love when rappers step into other genres entirely. There's something about someone like DC The Don fully embracing and capturing pop music where other artists in the always-been-underground territory keep to their own safe styles and absolutely killing it. We've seen DC's vocal ability in his rap work so it comes as no surprise that he has the ability to sing on a pop beat, but the way his cadence is suited to each track in slightly different ways is something hard to do especially with such ... read more
I don't give a fuuuuuuuuuck that I put this within 1 rating of Enter the Wu-Tang. KayCyy is absolutely phenomenal and the only reason why this isn't in the 90-99 range is because it's so short. Before I go on a rant about how KayCyy is the future of music, let me praise Gesaffelstein because that man has laid down the groundwork for this project with some beautifully weird instrumentation throughout, especially on songs like 'ASHLEY'S HEARTBEAT' and 'NO COLD'. Having the budget version of Daft ... read more
TALK TO 'EM COCHISE. This whole project is so fun, not that good in terms of the actual music but who gives two shits anyway. 'KANEKI' is a banger, 'YAKUZA TIES' is a banger, 'BIRD CHEST' is a banger. I don't expect lyrical prowess from Cochise and there is none in this album, which doesn't disappoint me because - guess what - IT'S FUCKING COCHISE. Cut this off...
Decent/solid at best in my opinion. Yeah sure there's some standout tracks like 'Hummingbird' and 'Self Love' but it's as good as a mainly trap soundtrack crammed with as many spider puns or references as humanly possible can be, which is alright. That being said, Lil Wayne saying he'll give an opp arachnophobia is arguably one of the best bars to come out of this whole record. I don't really have too much to say except it's rammed with unnecessary features in most parts but I guess it works ... read more
Without a doubt one of the best hip-hop albums of all time. Wu-Tang Clan are star-studded and it really shows on this project, with unforgettable tracks left, right, and centre. If you're going to make the argument that, in the 90's, the East Coast was better than the West, this is the album that you use to start and finish your argument.
Although there's no real cohesion throughout the project, The Melodic Blue is a great showcase of what is to come with Baby Keem in his exciting career he has ahead of him. There is plenty of room for improvement in terms of how the record plays from front to back, however in terms of lyrical ability, flow, and voice, Keem has it nailed down already. With Kendrick Lamar as his mentor, who knows how much more mature Baby Keem's next project will be and where his art can go from an impressive ... read more
There's an argument to be made that this is Travis' best album to date, but I argue with myself over it so I'll leave that out of this. I definitely don't think the 5-year hiatus was necessary to make this album, pretty much any album could be made within 2/3 years, but this album has surpassed expectations for me personally. I'm a huge Travis fan and I had a slight inkling that UTOPIA was going to be Travis' venture into Drake territory (numbers > quality) but I was very wrong with the ... read more
"so CoRNy ANd sTuPid, WaAaa wAAa WaaAA" Shut up. This album isn't conventional, so what? Who are you to expect a normal album from a guy who wears face paint and has a loc-fringe with iron nails in it? Of course it's not a masterpiece, it's Teezo's debut album, it's a little bit corny and he's not playing it safe by making songs for commercial audiences like pretty much every up and coming artist these days. Everyone from the rap community thinking this would be appealing to them in ... read more
I don't get the hate on this album at all. Maybe some people are so engrossed in 808's and snares that they can't listen to something heavenly even once in a while. Regardless of whether you're a Christian or not, and whether you really do believe that "JESUS IS KING" or not, this album can still be appreciated as a great piece of work from a man who doesn't give two fucks what you or I have to say about the album.
I don't know if people were expecting a Kendrick-level story from this album or something because why on Earth is the reception so poor? If you can't listen to songs like '500lbs' and 'Salty' without doing a dance in your head I worry for your mental health. It's FUN, not every album has to be a conceptual masterpiece. Really good songs throughout the album and transitions make it even better to listen to as a project instead of through a playlist, no features necessary but Ken Carson is ... read more
Is he trying to be Kendrick Lamar 2.0 REALLY BADLY? Yes, but that doesn't take away from the fact that this album is pretty good. Definitely not the strongest vocally OR lyrically but the project as a whole was very cohesive and focused for someone who is so early on in their career. I hope Senju can stray away from trying to be Kendrick and develop his own sound, because the potential he showed on this record is massive.
Unconventional as ever from Earl in terms of flow and interpretation of the beats that The Alchemist provided for the project, both worked brilliantly and the album is very good. I'm not the biggest fan of Earl myself but I thought I'd give this album a try for absolutely no reason at all, and although it's not an album I'm going to find myself listening to week after week, it was enjoyable and interesting.
