An insane album and one that is insanely underrated at that. Never a dull moment, all of the feels and one of the most unique sounding albums you’ll never hear anything like again.
I will always be grateful for this album as it gave me a chance to experience a release from my favourite band as a fan when I thought I might never see the day. It helps that this is also a fantastically enjoyable album too with moments that in my opinion reach some of the highest peaks of the bands career in the form of the singles. Blur go back to basics after an extended layoff and it’s about just as good as you could’ve hoped. The band feel revitalised and more sure of their direction and place in the music landscape following the break, which is largely aided by the return of Graham Coxon. This is blur at their most breezy and mellow but it never once sounds like they’re phoning it in, still 100 percent dedicated to their craft. Blur could’ve very easily thrown in the towel and not even bothered with this album given the circumstances around its production, namely the unexpected success of Gorillaz and the departure of Graham Coxon. However against all odds the remaining members managed to pull off another very solid album, albeit not quite matching the high standards they had set for themselves.
