This album is full of very touching and beautiful songs. Amber is uniquely good at creating a bed of familiarity with just the right amount of subversion to keep you hooked
Porter has graduated from an anime girl to a certified pop star. Each song on this album is catchier than the last. I think Porter's greatest strength is emotion- so many emotions from nostalgia, to excitement or exasperation are captured so vividly on each song with his bottomless supply of cool synths and his guitar playing.
Favorite songs: All of them
Least favorite: N/A
This is a great little electronic pop record from Zedd! His chord writing makes these songs a satisfying listen. Zedd's dynamic close to the ear production and some highlighted vocal features come together to make this quite enjoyable!
Favorite songs: Out of Time, Tangerine Rays, No Gravity, Lucky
Least favorite: Dream Brother
Playing Robots Into Heaven is the most James Blake album we’ve gotten yet with an insanely cool aesthetic; it’s rare that you get an album title that reflects the sound of the music so vividly!
When Friends That Break Your Heart released in 2021, I was hoping for an album to be a continuation of the ideas from his single and EP from the year earlier (Are You Even Real and the Before EP, James’ best batting average). Instead we got a fantastic electronic singer songwriter ... read more
Albums to me are usually like a skill tree I have to slowly unlock as I beat the lower hanging fruit and then progressively get behind the idea of the album and appreciate it in a more nuanced way. Nurture is QUITE the opposite. The appeal of this album was instant for me. The RPG anime soundscape makes you want to bawl your eyes out for the sake of a better time.
Nurture never lets you out of its world; there are no last season's cuts to be found. And although extremely consistent, wow does ... read more
This album embodies pop better 99% of pop records, but with cool sounds, and soul warming soul samples. While Shelter is Madeon's best song, this album stacks decently against it. Every song here is worth your time.
Here are the tracks in order or favoritism No Fear No More, Miracle, Dream Dream Dream, All My Friends, Be Fine, Heavy With Hoping, Nirvana, Hold Me Just Because, Mania, Borealis
SZA (mostly) sticks to what she knows and delivers a pretty consistent and enjoyable set of songs, even if rereleasing 2 songs for the sake of commercialism. Not as ""cohesive"" as Ctrl, but I think the individual songs fit their spot a bit better. Nobody Gets Me feels like a Taylor Swift song, and Open Arms doesn't need Travis Scott. On the other hand Smoking on My Ex Pack, Gone Girl, Seek & Destroy, and Snooze all really impressed me.
This album's production has a lot of sounds that appeal to my sensibilities. The rhytmic guitar licks mix really well with the r&b soundscape and pitched vocals. Brakence's voice carries this album. Some songs are just a wave of sound without enough contrast to make moments have the impact they deserve. Many of the tracks are overproduced with too many sounds competing for the same space.
But as much as these things bother me, there are some real standout moments in this record. The ... read more
This album is extremely creative and no other album could ever sound like this one, and few are as touching. Here is my probably unnecessary review that can't encapsulate this album the way it deserves.
Justin Vernon's lyricism is often cryptic and occasionally trying too hard. ("and I cannot seem to find I'm able" really?). But the angelic moments on this record can't be ignored. 715 CREEKS is possibly the most influential track on this album spawning lots of artists trying to ... read more
I feel very conflicted about no future. I've appreciated EDEN for some time and have high hopes for his future as an artist, despite the album title. I think this is a promising evolution for his sound, even if he hasn't quite figured it out yet.
Eden's melodies are really good and his voice is angelic, and that's finally coming together with nice production, even if the inspiration is worn on the sleeve at times. Upon release of this album there were complaints about the vocal style being ... read more
Not everybody knows this, so I'll clue you in. This is James Blake's best track. His songwriting, creativity, and general concept for all 4 songs is ridiculously good. The highest James Blake batting average we will probably ever see. I was hoping Friends That Break Your Heart would be in this vein although it turned out quite opposite.
Man the structure of every song is so dialed in. Please listen carefully to these tracks.
In this followup album to the legendary Time (2018) Louis goes for a bloated approach with a number of tracks not worth your time if you're not a Louis Cole fanatic. However this album DOES in fact have some of Louis Coles best tracks and shows off his extraordinary talent for spacey mood and funk in tandem, sometimes in the same track. Louis is an appropriately funky character and clearly has ambitions beyond making every person happy, hence the title of this album.
The second track on the ... read more
