The Fleet Foxes seemingly have gone out of nowhere. In April, they released an interesting EP "Sun Giants" and a couple of months later they came out with their debut album that surpasses the EP by miles. If you do not know the band's sound, the best way that I can summon it is early My Morning Jacket + Band of Horses = Fleet Foxes, as much as that is a generalization.
"Fleet Foxes" 11 tracks; 39 min.) starts off "Sun It Rises", and the opening sounds of that ... read more
I came to terms with Exile when raised by a friend what I thought the five all-time greatest Stones songs were - songs that will only live 50 years from now. My response was pretty quick - Satisfaction. Give Me Shelter, You Can't Always have what you Want, Wild Horses, and Sympathy for the Devil. Just my opinion. But I realized immediately none were from Exile, which I consider to be the Stones' all-time best album. Yes, Tumbling Dice and Happy are up there, and some cuts on Exile are, IMHO, ... read more
I don't think this record is a classic--I tend to agree with those who say the songwriter is lacking a little bit, in the way that the Lips's songwriter has always left a little to be hoped. I will say that this is a fantastic record approach beyond the alternative drivel you hear on the radio, and it deserves recognition as such. It's worth it. That said, I don't think the singing, the lyrics, and the songwriter can match the ambition of the "scoring," and when that happens, it makes ... read more
The first words that sprang to my mind after one listens to this album were "wretchedly awful".I did not see how this was possible after hearing so many great things about this band in general and this album specifically. Considering they do not play Wilco on the radio (why the hell not?). I was going to get a chance buying this, as I had never actually heard them, only for them. The second listen did little to change my opinion, but as they say, the third time's the charm. I began to ... read more
When I first heard from this record... there were some tracks at first that really stuck out to me. The Title cut is a big rocker. Blue Jay Way is one of the best freaky cuts I have never heard, and then there is the cool bit of Lennon psychedelia (I am the Walrus). Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane, originally cut for the immortal Sgt Pepper makes their appearance here. Fool on the Hill is a very good ballad, and reveals its strengths with each listen. WHen I first bought the record, ... read more
Reports suggest that Sigur Ros is from Iceland, but if they ended up being drawn from Pluto, or some far off galaxy, it wouldn't be surprising. Nor would feel about any difference. Agathis Byrjun, a hypnotic siren song of an album, glides in as if delivered by an advanced alien civilization. Warmer and fuller than any of Radiohead's attempts at moody, ambient music, Agaetis Byrjun would suggest the future of music if you actually believed anyone else on earth was talented enough to replicate ... read more
Hunky Dory (1971.). David Bowie's fourth studio album
David Bowie is among the greatest solo artists of all time and his unique alternative style (notice the omission of the word 'pop') is timeless and has deservedly won him loads of fans from generation to generation. Bowie has switched style from album to album and has produced music in loads of different styles whilst still maintaining his distinctive sound. 'Hunky Dory', Bowie's fourth studio album, released in 1971 is part of the greatest ... read more
I really was wishing to get into this album, and have listened to it a bunch of times before posting this review. The indie rock press has just gushed over this album, but there seems to be a love/hate thing going on here with a lot of the reviews. I would be bound to say that I fall somewhere in the middle - I didn't feel that strongly about this album one way or the other. Would I call the album overrated? Probably. Nevertheless, I can examine how some would find this album enjoyable. The ... read more
I've had various versions of this perennial favorite. Heck. Right now I have three versions of the studio release of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon alone. The original CD version, the 30th Anniversary hybrid SACD and, this, the new 2011 remaster. Although I have yet to hear the MFSL rendition, to me this is the best thing effort to date for a DSotM CD.
For one thing, thankfully, they didn't compress the music. It's appears to be level match fairly well with the other Dark Side CDs I have. ... read more
Note: This a review of the 40th Anniversary CD remaster, issued in 2012.
There is a curious phenomenon happening in the world of Bowie CD remasters, which we can hope to portend an attitude change in the music industry as a whole regarding the registering of classic albums. This phenomenon is, simply put, dating back to basics. More specifically, it appears as though EMI is actually starting to recognize that the sound of the original Bowie albums, at the time they were done, doesn't require ... read more
