I've gone through some losses lately, and music is usually the one thing I turn to most whenever such chapters develop in my life.
LUX has been perhaps the most prominent help in these moments I am currently facing. I cannot help but feel as if though I can take on most anything when I listen to this gorgeous album. Rosalía really lets her creativity shine brightly as always, but never has she done something as grand and orchestral, which I absolutely adore.
Perhaps what I have ... read more
Time flies... I cannot believe Ichiko Aoba released this masterpiece close to five years ago now.
I do not think that there exists an album more lush than Windswept Adan. Ichiko's voice is already unmatched in my book, as are her guitar skills, but fleshing out of that serene, folkish atmosphere she has developed across her previous albums is what makes this album my favorite in her entire discography. Up to this point, greater instrumentation and the usage of field recordings were more ... read more
This was the first album to get me to move into more “experimental” music, or at least, music that was beyond the realm of pop that my younger self was entrenched in.
I remember when Hunter first began playing through my headphones, and I was immediately hooked to this weird Icelandic musician’s album… then it progressed to her music, her films and especially her performance at the Royal Opera House…
Now she is my most listened to artist of all time, and I ... read more
This was one of the first albums I ever got on vinyl, and my love for this album has only grown with time.
FKA Twigs is a generational artist, and her voice and willingness to experiment in these glitchy, creative sounds makes Magdalene such a powerful listen. Rarely has an artist showcased their personal pain and trials so brazenly before, and much of this album is palpably heartbreaking as FKA Twigs sings with her heart on full display.
Every track on this album is amazing, even Holy ... read more
Ah, if only Melanie stuck to making music that was more in line with the latter half of this EP, as I actually found myself enjoying Dead To Me and Bittersweet Tragedy.
I also wish that she was not an alleged predator and sang about things she actually relates to, but perhaps I am too idealistic these days or something. Dollhouse and Carousel are still mid lol.
This album got me through many sleepless nights during my college days, and hell, it still does today.
I am not the most familiar with Oneohtrix Point Never's discography beyond Replica, but I certainly wish to familiarize myself with his other albums when time permits. As far as Replica goes, however, I love this album so much!
Sometimes in life, you have to kind of sit in the unease and uncertainty that sometimes defines certain periods or moments of our lives, and Replica allows the ... read more
Alright, so... I have a confession to make... I absolutely ADORED this album back in like 2017 or so.
You could not tell tween me ANYTHING bad about this album or Melanie Martinez herself, it would simply move in one ear and out the other. Now we are at the present day, the world has felt like it has been shaped by some bored writers for shits and giggles, and my opinion on Melanie and her music has long soured.
Honestly, the production on some tracks is catchy, as heard on Cry Baby, Pity ... read more
A fine album that showcases Hayley Williams' personal struggles by incorporating dry wit and some kickass production.
Although there are several tracks that I feel could have been cut from this album, as 18 tracks is quite the monstrous length, I do trust that each track still came from the heart. Hell, I hardly find myself minding some of the "cheesy" lyrics interspersed throughout Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party, and I even quite like the title track for its relatability. I ... read more
This album... let us just say that Taylor's detractors who refer to her albums as the musical equivalent of "unseasoned chicken with white rice" are feeling vindicated.
Here's the thing, Taylor has proven herself to be a decent enough songstress. Back when the pandemic began, I found myself quite enjoying Folklore and Evermore, and for a brief moment in time, I found myself being an earnest listener of hers.
Then Midnights came out, and it spoke more to the first syllable ... read more
So heartfelt, tender and powerful as always.
Florence Welch delivers Halloween spooks wrapped in an earnest, comforting veil. While this album does admittedly drag slightly, the songs that move slower do not horribly overstay their welcome. I found myself getting lost in each track, no matter how quickly they moved, as Florence always has this beautiful way of story-telling that transcends tempo entirely.
Standouts for me include One of the Greats and You Can Have It All, both tracks that ... read more
I am very intrigued by what Edward Skeletrix may put out in the future, but unfortunately, this album just wasn't for me.
I was intrigued by the cover art, and even more intrigued by the songs it held within, but for the wrong reasons. The track lengths and production kind of gave me whiplash, and I felt like I was in an exhibit dedicated to fever dreams, where the Hat Man was the only other visitor alongside me.
Life's So Funny was probably the weakest track for me... I don't ... read more
A quintessential trip-hop record, even if Portishead themselves may not consider it as such.
The 90's were truly a wonderful decade for music, and in my eyes, the birth of trip-hop during this time period is one of the key reasons why I personally hold the 90's in such high regard in terms of music. It was the summer of 2021 when I first really got into the genre as a whole, and Dummy served as a great, foundational place for me to begin my listening journey.
I remember first ... read more
I remember being so intrigued by the artwork of Ys when I was just a tween, but I never got around to fully listening to the stories it held within until I was older. I regret not jumping on the Joanna Newsom train (or horse and carriage, perhaps? Would that be more apt?) sooner.
Ys transports me to a fairy tale court, one that is adorned in Renaissance musings, but there is little joy to be expressed within its soaring walls and pillars, just grief and a need to find one's own rebirth ... read more
