MF DOOM - MM..FOOD

My toxic trait is that I think this album's better than Madvillainy. I think the more cartoon supervillain aesthetic works with DOOM's persona better than the more morose production from Madlib on Madvillainy. It's also an example of DOOM being funny as fuck and knowing it, one of the things that sets him apart from other rappers that otherwise would be on his level. Not many artists can put 5 minutes of skits in the middle of their album and have you go "haha classic ... read more

Daft Punk - Homework

I liked this era of Daft Punk where it felt like they had some level of resentment for the listener but not that much. You will get your loud and harsh noises (but not like the genre of harsh noise) and you'll like it, but it's okay because you get good songs too. They also liked making their songs long as hell too.

Favorite tracks: Revolution 909 (I like the way it sounds :) ), Alive (I also like the way it sounds :O ), Around the World (I also like the way it sounds and ... read more

I think if you act like an insufferable music dork about this album and go "erm... overrated!" you should have all music taken away from you and be forced to subsist on listening to flowing water.

Nas - It Was Written

I guess it's good? It's not bad, but I'd struggle to call it "good" outright. It DOES have some good songs on it, but not much about it makes me feel strong. I think this is going to hold up much worse on a relisten given how kind of dull it feels and how bad the lyrics might end up being overall. It's definitely carried by production already.

I mean, what do you expect? The contrarian urge may be strong, but sometimes things are a classic for a reason.

Gorillaz - D-Sides

Another solid addition to a good album, though with a higher mean cohesion than G-sides. There's a few tracks off this album that I legitimately forget aren't on Demon Days proper, given how good they are and how well they fit the broader Gorillaz mythos during this era. The general lack of features is interesting compared to prior albums, though I would have loved to seen a guest vocalist on one or two of these songs. I don't really factor remixes into my opinion of an overall ... read more

Gorillaz - Demon Days
90

SHOCKING: One of the most prominent alt-pop albums of the 2000s is good. Who would have guessed? It's not my favorite of the "classic" Gorillaz, but it's still frankly up there as one of the most interesting albums of the decade, if not all time. While not necessarily a concept album, the pervading themes of anti-war sentiment and existential frustration with the casual inhumanity we exhibit towards each other help tie this album together as a much neater package than their ... read more

Gorillaz - G-Sides

The Gorillaz fling a bunch of shit at the wall (wrong primate) and see what sticks, and a surprising amount does. I'd normally leave remixes out of the scoring for albums like these, but honestly these remixes are actually quite good, with the only "stinker" being the house remix of 19-2000 because it does that thing house songs do where they take a 3 minute long song and make it 7 minutes long for people who go outside and not geeks who listen to music by themselves like me. ... read more

Starting off my reviews with the album that properly got me into music. As much as it has a nostalgic place in my heart, this album is too messy for me to rank it up with the other two "classic" Gorillaz albums. With that being said, it's still a damn good album and a really solid start to a very eccentric band that has (for the most part) kept themselves from being boxed in by a single sound. There's a grittiness in this album that gets washed out in future albums and ... read more

On evil's review of Yuno Miles - ALBUM
"There's something to be said about the usage of memes to replace genuine human connection because many people are too scared to talk normally and be vulnerable and how pronounced this is amongst teens because teens are extra vulnerable and scared, but I don't think it's because there's some broader decline of society. It's just human nature colliding with uncharted territory of being able to know more than we ever thought we could."

"This feels like you've hyper-exposed yourself to a bunch of bad stuff online because we trap ourselves in interaction loops due to our crave of stimuli and you've snapped and tried to point to something exactly being the original sin or the anathema. It's a dinky-ass album loved by a bunch of teenage dweebs who say things to fit in (neutral statement, being a teenage dweeb is an important part of life), it's not the fifth horseman. I can empathize with the despair, I fell into a steep depression in my late teens like 7 years ago, but it's not indicative of reality."

"This might be the first time in at least a year where "it's not that deep bro" really works. I don't think I'm going to disabuse the nihilistic notions of someone who's reviews are 60% zeroes, but I do feel the pull to at least say *something* so I can verbalize just how alien this review feels to me. It's not like trivializing bad things is new, go back to any acclaimed comedian in the last century and they definitely had a bit about how awesome it was that some ethnic cleansing happened or how trite and humorous war is or how some major hate crime led to great material. Literacy rates also aren't great right now because of issues with the American education system de-prioritizing phonics in some states but it's not like it's permanent."

"I've heard a few of my friends use the "genre" label of dementia rap to define rap music that feels like it's somehow doing less than going through the motions of an album, like it's the skeleton of what a song should be but there's absolutely nothing of substance. Prior to this album's release we used to point to Future as the master of the dementia rap style but with this release (from the snippets I've heard) it seems like Travis Scott has usurped the mantle."

"Do you agree with the assessment that this album is part of the burgeoning subgenre of "dementia rap"?"
