Indeed, there’s something profoundly unsettling about D-Sides. It’s better than it has any right to be.

AllMusic

While not all of the remixes hit these heights, overall it's a fun set, and a good complement to the eclecticism of D-Sides' first disc.

Crazy as a second Gorillaz B-sides album might sound, this rummage through the ‘Demon Days’ cutting room floor is totally justified.

‘D-Sides’ shouldn’t be seen as an after thought of an album conveniently released in time for Christmas, more as an essential accompaniment.

While not exactly new material, D-Sides offers a double-CD set of early demos, remixes, and b-sides, which should hold fans over ’til their third LP.

Gorillaz' double-disc D-Sides, an extension of the hit Demon Days, isn't as bland as that description suggests, but like 2002's G-Sides, it lacks the luster of the studio album that inspired it.

Entertainment Weekly

Maybe, overall, B-Minus Sides might’ve been more accurate.

You wonder if Albarn is spurred to all this solo and side-project activity by the refusal of Graham Coxon to rejoin the fold, the failure of his original band to properly regroup. If so, ideally the reunion will be infinitely postponed, giving us several more projects with the wit and daffy ingenuity of Gorillaz rather than the prospect of one more conventional careerist rock record.

If anything, D-Sides offers an intriguing insight into Albarn’s creative processes, allowing as it does half-finished numbers to see the light of day and providing evidence, were it needed, that the sometime Britpop poster boy continues to push boundaries prolifically and, for the most part, successfully.

This rarities collection still has some surprises.

The Guardian

This two-disc set of remixes, demos and out-takes from the Demon Days sessions functions as both a house cleaning exercise and a warts-and-all insight into Damon Albarn's working methods.

For every shrugged shoulder and pained wince that D-Sides may elicit, there’s a reminder of the wellsprings of inspiration that laid the basis for that second album.

Where Demon Days floored with its collaborations and melody, D-Sides leaves the listener cold, being disjointed and often indulgent to the point of hilarity.

I don't bother with the remix tracks, but the bulk of this compilations work is really, really good. It's got that trademark Gorillaz quirkiness without sounded like it was forcing or pushing the vibe. It's relatively varied in tone, style, and genre. The lack of features would normally be a detriment, but the fact that it is a B-Sides (err, D-Sides) helps excuse that. The fact that no semi-competent MC got to touch the Spitting Out The Demons beat is a fucking travesty. Solid outing here, ... read more

Isn't it sick af that Demon Days' b-sides are an entirely different record in sound, instead of more of DD? I don't wanna have to put the remix disc in the rating since it'll bring down the rating and take away from the excellent first half. I will. It's only fair.

What I said about G-Sides applies here. It's a group of experiments that we wouldn't hear from Gorillaz outside this context. Only thing is that D-Sides has a lot more to offer.

The remix disc is actually better than I would ... read more

I think this album is underrated and under-discussed simply because it's a compilation of Demon Days outtakes and remixes, but I think it has so many gems that more Gorillaz fans should listen to. For example, "Spitting Out the Demons" has a really crude but cool-sounding bass and a guitar that's only meant to accompany, or "The Swagga," which has a really catchy beat, or better yet, "Rockit," which, while mostly "blah blah blah," is still an ... read more

It's a real shame the remixes are on this project, because I would have this much higher if that were the case. Disc 1 while granted having some pretty forgettable/ok tracks there's still a lot quality on here. For example Hongkongaton and We Are Happy Landfill are really fun songs. Hong Kong is one of my favorite Gorillaz songs, and I think its one of their best songs in their entire catalogue. And Stop the Dams is a really beautiful, very underrated; and is a beautiful way to close ... read more
