I actually really like this album. I'd say this is around the same level as Pinkerton. Happy to say that I like Weezer, though I'm not sure I should be.
I got literally nothing out of this album aside from "every planet we reach is dead" and the iconic "feel good inc.". It's not like the songs are bad, but I never felt so little listening to music. Not disgust, not joy, not sadness, not anger, not even fucking boredom. This album is special in that way, I guess.
This is by no means a bad album at all, I just found that it's REALLY not for me, and I had a few issues with the cohesiveness of the songs, they feel like the ... read more
The number of times I asked "what the fuck am I listening to?" when experiencing this record is astounding.
Turns out, even after finishing it, that's a hard question to answer. It felt like I was listening to a band as they played right in front of me. But... I wouldn't even say they were a band. It was more like just, people. I was listening to people play instruments and speak to me, telling me strange stories like I was at a campfire with them, the instruments substituting for ... read more
I came into this album with the predisposition that I was going to dislike it. Why? Because it's fucking MCR. The fans are obnoxious, I don't like emo, and the few songs I have heard were really mediocre.
I was wrong. I was really wrong. This is a fantastic album. It's repetitive at first, but it picks up well after the halfway mark.
With the exception of Moonchild, this was a phenomenal listen the whole way through. I don't even like long songs, and yet, I think the album title track is one of my favorite songs now.
Ahead of it's time, mesmerizing percussion (the drum sounds so fucking good!), phenomenal vocals and lyrics. Yeah, it's a good album.
This is actually one of XTC's best albums. I felt as if Nonsuch drew from this album, as it is very similar to this, but if you ask me, The Big Express just cuts out all the boring stuff from the album while sadly lowering the ante on the best songs. I really enjoyed it the whole way through though, liking Wash Away and All You Pretty Girls in particular.
This record has some really impressive songs (like Mayor of Simpleton and President Kill Again), but it sounds like a really standard 80s pop album. I can also notice a beatles influence here, which is pretty nice. Overall, a mediocre album.
Ah, spirit phone, the only lemon demon album I tolerate, and one of the earliest albums I've ever listened to. Happy to say that I still listen to songs from it every so once in a while.
I guess I'm doing an XTC deep dive now. Weird, I can't stop myself from listening to this music, but I hardly like it.
Anyway, this album is terribly boring. At least, in the first ~66%, it is. Like most XTC albums so far, the song quality picks up heavily in the third quarter. In fact, it picked up so hard I'd say this album has some of XTC's best songs, making up for the boring stuff twofold. That Wave is a nice psychedelic tune, The Ugly Underground is a great rock song, and War Dance has ... read more
Fucking phenomenal album. I always gave Cake credit for their unique style of rock music-- simple yet snazzy --and by GOD did they perfect it here. And they did it while trying some new things too! Not perfect, as there is a bit of blending of sound happening here and there, but otherwise just an incredible record.
Friend is a four-letter word is unbelievable.
Everything else is solid.
Good record. Had a few dull moments, but strong overall.
It's difficult to express how I feel about this record. At first, I found myself saying "hey, I don't hate this," but the songs felt so stripped of anything it was hard to enjoy.
And then, as the record progressed, something kind of just clicked with me. And then I started to relax-- because really, that's what this record is for. Relaxing.
Yeah so... this is a good album. It's emotional, it's gorgeous, and it does it so seamlessly. It's as if the band did all this from the heart, as if they did it once, coming up with the songs on the spot, and perfecting them just like that.
I don't rate this a perfect score for two reasons: song length and replayability. I'm not one that fancies very long songs, which this album has in abundance; it makes it a hassle whenever I just wanna hit shuffle. Secondly, the raw emotion of each track, ... read more
Did a little relistening.
This is one relaxing rock album, grew on me a ton. The first half is full-on rockers and the second half is slower jams. The two longest tracks on this album are actually damn good, I don't know why I didn't like them at first.
Really, this is an album with a little bit of something for anyone. I can't imagine someone listening to this and not liking at least two songs on it. No longer is omnium Gizzard's best IMO, it's this album for sure.
Favorite: I'm in your Mind, ... read more
Upon revisiting, a far more enjoyable album than I once thought. She's an Angel was an immediate clicker.
Upon relisten, this album isn't that bad. I'd actually say it's pretty good.
There's a sort of charm to this album, naturally. It's goofy, and that's no secret when you're listening to TMBG. But under all that goofiness, I realized, are songs that are actually trying to say something. Maybe it isn't every song, and the sound definitely doesn't lead you to think that, but it's true. Look at the song "Lucky ball and chain", for example, which has not only become my favorite TMBG song ... read more
My old review is quite outdated. This album has a lot of great standouts. As a whole I don't find it spectacular, but what's good is phenomenal. TMBG is a band I heavily respect.
Kiss me Son of God is the catchiest commie claptrap i've ever heard
I did a little relistening.
There is no other word that properly describes this album as the overused "classic". Absolutely incredible production, great lyrics, and great instrumentals. Billy Joel is an amazing singer with an incredible voice, by the way. This really is billy Joel's magnum opus; all the instruments used, the song composition, and the sheer emotion in this album beat out anything else he's released before.
This might become a ten after a few more listens. I truly ... read more
I did a little relistening.
I truly believe that this is the best Jukebox The Ghost album, and probably one of the best albums in the indie pop genre. This is their best attempt at trying to make something great, and by god, did they make something great. Though there are a number of things you can list here as being "unimpressive", the flow of this album, the individual songs, the song progression, the songwriting, and the production are so top-notch that you cannot deny the ... read more
