The sound manages to be stripped back yet meticulous, going for a "quality over quantity" approach that makes every note and beat calculated and visceral. This layer has the best music and general aesthetics, but the bugs are just atrocious.
There's a lack of enthusiasm in this album that was so staunchly apparent in their former work. It's certainly not a bad or unenjoyable album. I quite like some of these songs, and tracks like James K. Polk still carry their trademark good sense of humor. I don't feel that this album is as air-tight as Apollo 18 and Flood, but it has some incredible standouts. I appreciate the more rock-focused approach of this album, as many of their former hits leaned further into pop. It's good stuff, overall, and I'm glad to have heard it.
