Did a little relistening. This album is far more impressive than I initially thought. The jazz aspects are cut back but that doesn't make the songs any worse. Listen to this shit, seriously. Steely Dan are fucking incredible.
Favorites: Caves of Altamira, The Fez, Haitian Divorce, Don't Take Me Alive, Green Earrings.
Least favorite: The Royal Scam
Finally, some good-ass New Wave music.
Great album. Always wanted to get into this band, and I'm glad I started here.
Very silly album and a solid debut. The sound Cake was going for was really repetitive here honestly, but it's still an enjoyable experience.
This album is very special to me. It was basically the album that got me into music as a whole, and way back then, I'd play the tracks off this record religiously. Nowadays, though, I don't even touch Tally Hall songs. Not because I dislike them or anything, but because I kind of just got sick of them.
Relistening to this album not only breathed fresh life into these songs I loved but actually made me like the songs more. Songs I wasn't all too crazy about, like Banana man, just apathy, and ... read more
A much more enjoyable project than Shyga. Ironically much heavier on the psych sound, and a few of the songs actually reminded me of one of my favorite super-unknown artists, Barry Uhl. (give his music a listen).
This album feels like it's missing something. It's missing that charm PPC had. It sounds like standard rock songs put under a psychedelic filter. It wasn't bad but... it just wasn't great, either.
I will concede though that "The Tale of Gurney Gridman" is a standout here, and a great song.
This album barely holds a candle to part one. It feels so much less creative, doesn't have the same quantity of bangers, and the songs that are bangers barely compare to those in part 1.
That being said, this is still a pretty solid album.
Solid prog album. Not much else to say, aside from the fact that the flute was so jarringly loud at times, it hurt my ears.
I don't get how something with 3 critic scores can be so fucking unknown.
Anyway, I randomly found this guy looking for unpopular spotify artists. I certainly succeeded, and then I did some research and apparently, this guy's album was nominated for a grammy??? Also, he's dead, which... is needless to say, tragic. A moment of silence for this man.
Now, onto the review.
This album is good. It isn't something that tries to blow you away with crazy instrumentation or heavy song topics. Nah, it ... read more
Best: Zatoichi, Walkin, Mental, Angelz
Worst: Troubles, Ain't no way (these blow).
I enjoyed this quite a bit for my third rap album ever. Felt like the song topics were a bit overdone at times, but that's about it.
Funnily enough, I considered this more, what's the word, cinematic than the band's debut. Songs like Providence were trying to set the tone of some spooky, gothic scenery. It worked well, but I cannot sit down here and write in this review that I liked it, because that'd be lying.
I did enjoy this album. I really did. The hypnotic drums, and funnily enough, lo-fi from the debut that was missing here really hurt this record for me. The big, grandiose finale of this album, Starless, didn't hit ... read more
If there is one thing anyone can agree on when it comes to Ween, it's that Chocolate and Cheese is one of the best in their discography. Never have I witnessed it be rated lowly, and it makes sense why. The quirkiness of the band is very prevalent here, but the musicality isn't sacrificed whatsoever. Any instance with Ween shitting around, even on the track "Candi", still has great moments.
This album really has it all. The genre switches every song, and though some are out of left ... read more
This just sounds like a boring version of the debut. It's not a bad record, and the closing track is pretty interesting, but I barely got anything out of it otherwise.
This album is genius. From the very first two minutes of "We Invent You", I had a suspicion I got myself into something special. I was able to experience something fucking majestic. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't the best musical experience I've had, but... god, let me just describe it.
i listened to this record at like, 2 am. I was tired, butt tired, and i decided to just close my eyes a few songs in. From there on, it all made sense to me. The instruments, the words-- it's genius. ... read more
This reminded me way too much of Pinkerton. Don't ask me why, that album doesn't even remotely sound like this EP.
Anyway, calling this a noise-pop EP would be a terrible understatement. The vocals were so drowned out by the instruments I was convinced the singer wasn't even saying words half the time. I guess that's the thing about lo-fi, isn't it? It's by definition badly produced.
That being said, I liked this record way more than I should've. Considering how I have a very low tolerance ... read more
I will tell you right here and now that this album could've heavily benefitted from more percussion on the songs because the songs that did have percussion (Yes and 42, for example) were fantastic.
Aside from that, though, this is a mellow album with some cool themes and sounds. It has as many boring songs as it has good ones, but I surprisingly wouldn't call any of it generic.
But, I do want to give special mention to the closing track. I was reading something as I listened to it and it ... read more
Here we are, ladies and gentlemen. The debut of this strange band, and the last one I have to listen to (on spotify at least).
It was a good note to end it on. Despite the abhorrent vocals, I liked this record decently enough. The instrumental was good, the songs were catchy, and the energy of the band was unparalleled.
I'm no fan of XTC, but I do respect this band heavily for their spirit and the songs they've made that I adore.
My first record from this band. My verdict?
Lemme tell you, the accordion is crazy here. Also, it's a solid album. This isn't music I'd usually listen to, as it takes a folk-inspired approach while sounding like some weird french band. It's a tad extra at times, but I'm happy to say that I enjoyed the album, though the music isn't for me. What Do Ya Want is a real standout here.
Great music. Very upbeat, very fun. I'm a larger fan of the second half, but the record is pretty consistently good. Oh darling, the title track, and Take the long way home are my favorites. Love how the first and third can be so slow yet so energetic.
