XTC - English Settlement

I decided it was high time i relisten to these XTC albums. Not all, just the ones that I consider to stand out to me. Started with this one since its long and was one of my least favorite.
So... uh, I definitely had a better experience, but I'd be lying if I told you I wasn't finding myself bored pretty often. I think the big issue is that a lot of songs on this album are just so fucking long. They're TOO long. All the 5 and 6 minute songs on this project just wear out halfway through, it's ... read more

I did a little relistening.

This album is incredibly underrated. This is some fantastic hardcore-ish psychedelic rock right here. I can't seriously list a single flaw in these songs aside from that some of them have weird beginnings and that these aren't my all-time favorite tracks or anything, but the former is negligible (and not even a problem honestly) while the latter can be chalked up to a difference of taste.
Favorite: Found god in a tomato, Cubensis Lense

XTC - Drums and Wires

Edit: I did a little relistening. I ended up liking this album a lot more.

I sort of have an "ah-ha" moment while listening to this thing. I finally understood the appeal of this quirky new wave music, and I also realized that a lot more songs on this album were good than I initially thought. But I still think this album has a lot of flaws. The quality consistency just isn't there. There are a lot of straight-up bad songs, like Roads Girdle the Globe, and it is still an EXHAUSTING ... read more

This was one of the most rewarding re-listens I've ever had.
I don't know what exactly made this album click for me. Maybe it was the fact I was taking a leisurely walk while listening, which actually fits the mood of the album very nicely, or maybe it was because lots of the garbage I've been hearing from this band desensitized me. I'm leaning toward the third option; this album is just really good.

Experimental masterpiece. This is probably the only avant-surf album out there, and for what it's worth, it is incredible.
I have to re-review this album because my last review was piss short and an album this meaningful to me doesn't deserve treatment that piss short.
Here's the thing, every experiment and thing this album tries out is executed with such finesse that it conglomerates into 45 minutes of musical perfection where almost NO song sounds the same, yet are all incredibly high in ... read more

Will Wood - The Normal Album

Though William Woodington made some of the most extra, over-the-top songs on this LP... I still really like it. It's like ear candy, but I will admit that it's a guilty pleasure of mine.

Also, this was one of the first albums I listened to after I developed a music taste beyond crappy EDM stuff, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Will Wood - "In case I make it,"

This album makes a lot more sense in the context of Will Wood's catalog. You really shouldn't listen to it without having listened to and understood his previous albums, because then it just won't hit as hard.

This is a reflection album. More than that, though, it's an album about growth, acknowledging shortcomings, and trying to be the best person possible. It's a beautiful piece of work; it's art. It's a beautiful piece of art. And hey, the music rocks too. Tomcat Disposable is an incredible ... read more

Lives up to the score.

Great album, though I will admit the sound sort of meshes together, making it difficult to discern tracks. Otherwise, a great rock album. Michael's my favorite song from here.

Ween - La Cucaracha
65

Gave this album a few more listens. Ended up liking it more, and now I have to tell all of you how overhated this album is.

La Cucaracha harkens back to Ween's goofy side that they've been neglecting for a while. It is... done to decently good effect. Some moments (like spirit walker) feel way too forced, but that's really the only problem song on this album. It's worth mentioning that for every goofy song, there's a really great track (I.E, sweetheart in the summer, with my own bare hands, ... read more

Ween - Shinola, Vol. 1

Do not sleep on this album.

Even though this album is just a re-recording of a bunch of b-sides, my goodness, this is some of the best music you can find period. In the classic Ween style, this shit has got it all-- jazz, prog rock, space rock, even some thin lizzy inspired shit and some junk i cant attribute to a genre. Plus it has a few brown songs for the weirder Ween fans out there. And yet, as someone who isn't all too crazy about brown songs... I still ended up liking them a lot. ... read more

Ween - 12 Golden Country Greats

"I think I've spent the dog food money, but he'll love me just the same."

Ironically enough, this record sticks out like a sore thumb in Ween's discography. Not only is it the only record that adheres to a single genre (though it does explore numerous sub-genres), that being country, but it's also... well, country.

But despite those oddities, Ween's raw musicianship still holds true.

This is a great record. It holds some of my favorite country tracks and downright some of Ween's ... read more

This was a strange experience. But, hey, I ended up enjoying it.

There were definitely points in the album where I got bored, but more often than not, I ended up enjoying the tracks featured on this LP. The only track I found bad was The Mind Electric... and that's for obvious reasons. It's funny because the second half of that song is my favorite part of the album, but hey, there are tons of edits that fix my issues with it on youtube, so the real enjoyment I get from the songs featured on ... read more

Will Wood & The Tapeworms - Everything Is a Lot
91

Incredible. Truly just incredible. With the exception of the last song (which would be the second half of Everything Is A Lot if you're listening to the 2015 version), this album is nothing but awesome tune after awesome tune. I was never bored by it, and I loved the transition from total chaos to somber tracks that happens throughout the album. I will admit that the mixing isn't the best for many tracks (A Little Bit Mine specifically), but still, just... listen to it. One of the best ... read more

A smashing, chaotic Alt-rock album that surprised me in quality. Before an entire listen, all I heard was the shovel song, but now I adore well over half of the album. It's short, but damn does it leave an impact.

Ween - White Pepper
98

When Ween were walking around in that one interview and said "we wanted to make something great", boy, did they make something great. Full of mystical, catchy, awesome, and surprisingly deep songs, don't let the obvious Beatles inspiration make you think it's just pure derivative music.

Ween - Quebec
97

I think that there are few albums as rich and soulful as Quebec by Ween. Every line comes from a place of unfeigned experience, a reality once faced, translated into a striking soundscape. Each phrase is articulated with such sincerity as if it was being written and spoken the moment it came to Gener's mind. I could endlessly talk about this project and its creation, about its hidden secrets like the caeser demos, but relaying all this information to you isn't the point of an AOTY review. ... read more

Ween - The Pod

This is Ween's brownest album, and definitely their most eclectic at that. It comes with a serving of 21 different genres and 40 layers of bad production. I'll be the first to admit that this album isn't for everyone; I mean shit, it's 80 minutes long, has undeniably bad songs, and the production takes so much time to digest and get used to that you might as well not even try.

However, I am a Ween fan, and as Ween fan it is my duty to relisten to this. It isn't my duty to tell you what i ... read more

I had to relisten to this album. I just had to. As a self-proclaimed Ween fan, I couldn't let this old-ass 40 score rest. Same with all the other albums from the "Deep end" of Ween's discography.

This album is a very interesting turn for Ween. Production-wise, it's in between the pod and GWS in terms of quality. Songwriting-wise, this album is about the same. Sonically? Well...

I'll tell you that this album makes a great first impression of what you're getting to. Little Birdy is ... read more

I will be relistening to this, The Pod, and Pure Guava over the coming weekend. My music tastes evolved since the last time I visited these albums, so I had to know if anything had changed.
They did. Things changed a lot.
This album is just so much fun, but at the same time, it's a devastating emotional journey. I shed tears when Gene Ween described how terribly his head was stung by a bee.
The best part is that a good chunk of this track list is great. There are obviously quite a lot of joke ... read more
