Relative to their previous two (excellent) studio recordings, this Cockroach simply sounds half-assed.

Gene and Dean Ween revert to some of the silliest parodies and jokes of their 20-year career. That would be okay if the songs were stronger or if the genres they chose to mutilate weren’t so noxious.

“La Cucaracha” is a frustrating end to the Ween Universe, purely cause of how little it seems to be interested in being a Ween album. Not that it’s not weird, the genre changes are still there. But there’s no finesse, there’s no charm to back it up. So whenever it tries to get weird, like with the opener, it just kinda falls flat on its face and ends up just being the lame kinda weird. It’s a fine project, it just seems like Ween didn’t really know what to do. There’s no overarching concept or vibe they’re trying to achieve, so you just get this dry chicken for an album.

Fiesta is kind of a great opener ngl. Really fun and energetic. If it were attached to a better album the score would be way higher.
