Really solid attempt from Trivium. Do love the production, the guitars kinda remind me of Car Bomb with those harmonic bends that are precisely encased into the mix. Though I do think they play it very safe here.
To drop an album after a 30 year hiatus and have it, in my humble opinion, even outclass the brilliant original work that was put in during the commercial/creative peak of the genre, has to be a fringe case, even the most weathered metalheads had never seen before.
I am incredibly delighted that Coroner chose to scrape the rust off the strings and wipe the dust off the drumset, to once more light up the studio. In many ways this album sounds like a therapy session for them, to show themselves ... read more
Considering their last album gave me a headache, because how awfully mixed it was, I guess this is a huge improvement. But still not great, the guitars are pretty much reduced to percussion, the actual tone and melody take a backseat in the mix. I'm still quite a fan of the vocals, even though they are campy, they keep all of the unintentional noises, which sell the intensity of them. I'm also happy to report that the symphonic and ambient elements play a much lesser role on this one, ... read more
Caveman Mode with Cartoon soundeffects. So basically the Flintstone's Djent theme.
Saturday Night Wrist marks a significant turning point in Deftones' style, as I think their discography can be split in two halves: pre SNW and post SNW. SNW itself meanwhile feels like both eras of Deftones clash and out of this melting pot rises what I would honestly consider their most consistent project.
On one hand it takes the most droning and soft shoegaze approach to the sound yet. But it still incorporates invigoratingly aggressive playing to dish out heavy emotional blows, ... read more
Whenever I hear a british accent, I can not contain myself from wanting to ask the vocalists if they can say "Bottle of Water" for me please. So me not being able to take it serious does not mix well with the generic as Statements that are being expressed. Like "it's our differences that make us beautiful" and "born to die". No sh*t Sherlock.
The sax can also be hit or miss, on trenches it is able to give that earworm lead melody that just oozes Power, while ... read more
The Definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. So either they are insane or they want everything to sound the same.
Yeah, definitely the least interesting of the swedish death metal big 4.
Synestia are effectively what Lorna Shore think they are. The drums hit incredibly hard, the guitars are as fluid and clear as it gets for the melodies and as tightly silenced as humanly possible for the breakdowns. There are some actual fun production ideas with effects, panning, orchestral elements and creative harmonics, that make this an engaging listen. Even if the vocals besically become throwing up into the mic.
Twenty one pilots take us on a turbulent flight with their newest project. Sometimes it feels like the oxygen masks are about to drop from the ceiling, because we just hit a downburst. Noticeably on the tracks downstairs and one way which expose the bands tendency to feature lyrics and hooks on nursery rhyme level. Generally what bothers me the most about their style are these not very convincing theatrics about everyday problems without any nuance and an approach that is as on the nose as it ... read more
Frankly I can't tell if they have changed anything of their sound compared to the last album. I'm basing this just on a gut feeling, that some of the solos and refrains feel a little bit more like they can sell the righteous and triumphant feeling, which they are trying so desperately to achieve. The vocals are just so exhausting, always aiming for the most overexaggerated impression, adding little value to the overarching goal of the music. In that regard, Will's vocals are ... read more
Certainly good melodeath, even though the messaging can be very corny. They aren't necessarily the most technical or complex of the genre, but that can also be a good thing as they don't overplay tropes and ideas. Still could have had more Variety.
Basically they were like a decade ahead of their peers in regards to songwriting.
I feel like their hardcore roots really show on this new record, but not in the way you are thinking. It's just they don't know how to make an album longer than 25 minutes. After all 12 minutes of this 37 minute experience sound like filler. And in the actual 25 minutes they get frequently bogged down, putting out shoegaze-core thats doesn't really know if it wants to lean in the more aggressive or the more ethereal side of the genre.
A very disappointing sophomore.
This is the album where the band sounds on their technical peak, they are so tight on here. Also not a whole lot of fancy vocal effects or experiments, Chino keeps it pretty straight forward with his style, but therefore delivers some of his best singing performances yet. They dive into longer conceptual tracks here, creating a real cinematic feel with a lot of similar energy, but throw in a few twists and turns, especially in an almost blues rock-ish seductivity and punky insolence.
However at ... read more
Random less than 1k monthly listeners band making great music. Just black metal things really
By many regarded as deftones best, but I don't think so and I happily tell you why (though it's still pretty good).
First off, production-wise I even think it's a step back compared to around the fur. The guitars come with more Feedback, similar but not as extreme as adrenaline. It's a very "unclean" distorted tone. And yeah I get that distortion basically means unclean, but I still feel like there is a difference if you catch my drift. However I do like a lot of ... read more
