HEY!? what are you looking at??? This is a private Review. Trespassers will be executed.
You've been warned.
Legendary nu-/alt-Metal/shoegaze outfit Deftones dropped their 10th Studio album. Quite the impressive run ngl. And it also quite certainly is an improvement on their last two attempts of creating something coherent in audio form. Though I feel like their journey has not been as transformative as some fans would like to make you believe. It might be a case of sequel-fatigue, ... read more
A GA GA BU AGA BU BU AGA. Yeah that callout is goated.
The Daoboys return with what I would consider their best work yet. It builds on everything the previous album provided and expands the soundscape to unseen levels of whackiness. However a lot of the "different" bits thrown in here still feel very out of place and random. What doesn't feel random though is the riffing, which compared to their contemporaries still incorparates crazy rythms and harmonies, but in a more ... read more
Basically are more digestable and grounded version of Black midi. But don't let that Statement guide you to the wrong conclusions, this is still a project carried by it's strong progressive, artsy songwriting. Certainly not as abrasive, but filled to the brim with layers of multifaceted guitarwork. Just sometimes they get a bit lost in the sauce.
This album was one hell of a grower for me, at first the gimmicky production and his half hearted flows turned me of. But something kept me coming back and now i think this is one of the best produced Hip Hop albums of the decade. The house and club beats morphing into this partial horrocore aesthetic towards the second half is something to behold.
Also Vince's style has really grown so much on me, he brings this adulescent cockiness and very interesting tone color in his voice which ... read more
Honestly I've heard worse this year. There's at least some fun to be had with this.
Pusha T's and Malice's rhyme schemes stuffed full of clever wordplay and double entendres are addictive to listen to. The delivery sounds like an authorative speech you father is preaching you. You know, the one when you screwed up real hard and he comes with the "from now on, things will be different". That type of Monologue. And when they aren't in that mode they bring the bars with such selfconfidence and arrogance, because they know very well that everyone being ... read more
Metalcore's inability to move on from this sound for basically a decade now is really impressive. But thats about everything thats impressive
Most of the breakdowns don't feel earned. All the songs just meander on the same level of intensity. Some cool melodic and symphonic ideas here and there, but would much rather listen to the New Cryptopsy instead.
Did not expect Cryptopsy to pull it back after the mediocre 2023 release. But they proved me wrong, they still have it.
At the end of the day I have a hard time relating to the feelings Abel tries to convey here. It's just a bit out of touch and also too frickin long. Still some good Material to vibe to.
Orthodox stay snuggly in their comfort zone. And honestly as long as they add amazing features like Brann Dailor's to their sound, I'm fully content with that.
EDIT: Finished the game now (it's great) and I gotta say a lot of the tracks are mixed better in the game, I feel like the melodies and bass Pop a little more. Which makes it even more baffling that the ost ended up like this.
Doom soundtracks are very important to me. I have to thank Mick's work on 2016 for getting me into metal, or really just extreme music in general. And on top of that, that album is like seriously no cap genre defining. As a soundtrack. Name me another ... read more
I have awoken from my slumber, just to give Sleep Token a bad rating. The irony.
It's worse than the predecessor, that one at least carried some originality
Better than Symbolic.
Might be the peak of 90's death metal, quite literally the peak that this album wants you to climb. Genuinely never heard anything that is this uplifting, but also punishing.
The solos and melodies are so incredibly sharp and distinct, the drums always marching on and Chuck's voice a very shrill drill seargent. Your daily reminder that nothing comes from nothing, one must suffer to reach their goals. Especially the suffering you have to endure to cover these ... read more
Deafheaven is a band I had a good amount of contact with prior to this record, but I was never fully absorbed by their work. It never managed to draw me in, to the degree of totally neglecting my sourroundings and filling all the space thats on my mind. Sure I appreciated their work, I understood the significance of their influence on the genre, but it never fully clicked until now.
Now let me get into the nitty gritty on why I think this is their crownjewel:
First things first, the mix on ... read more
More like LinkedIn Park.
Seriously though somebody throw Mike out of his own band, his rapping on this is atrocious. Song doesn't quite play as much into Emily's strengths as much as I would like it to either. Lyrics feel even shallower than usually.
I guess I like the overall direction as well as the synth scratch break.
This was a mess, should have stuck with the galloping chugs. He is the best in the biz for those.
My two cents: Carti mostly dabbles around in an ethereal high of sounds, trying to convey this state of absolute inviolability, where you can enjoy life in its purest form so to speak, letting lose of all rationalism that keeps us grounded. But more often than not the reality comes crashing down in form of the production sounding half assed on some tracks and him just lacking the energy to get you off the ground.
No denying there are some bangers here, but half the time it was so mindnumbing, ... read more
Fredrik really just said "it's djentin time" and djented all over the place.
