Tyler, The Creator - IGOR
96

YEAH HOE! YEAH HOE!

One-upping Flower Boy is fucking nuts

Tyler is NOT having a good time. The concept of this love triangle and the nuances of life in the LGBT community are expressed in such a unique perspective that truly only Mr. the Creator could give to us. The synths are heavy, the production is flawless, and he makes it fucking impossible not to think about your ex while listening. The way he uses his voice to show his frantic feelings and emotional spiral throughout the album paints ... read more

Steely Dan - Aja
98

My dad really knows ball guys, it’s fuckin nuts. He’s been playing Asa my entire life and I never knew it was all on the same album until a couple years ago. What a sick fuckin album. Guitar solos left and right, harmonies no matter where you look, and gorgeous woodwind sections across damn near every track. Aja fuckin rocks.

But where are youu, tomorrooooow?

Doesn’t Chinese music set all of us free?

They got a name for the winners in the world, I want a name when I ... read more

redveil - sankofa

Sankofa: to learn from the past.

Wow what a beautiful step forward from Redveil here. Learn 2 Swim was awesome but he is coming DIFFERENT here. Sankofa is a rap jazzsterpiece that sounds like if you threw Melt My Eyez, Flower Boy, Care for Me, and Redveil in a blender. The production is stunning, the horns float beautifully on top of nearly every song, and what beautiful vulnerability. As someone who works in the psych field, I truly appreciate is creation of awareness for people who ... read more

Mac Miller - Balloonerism
90

Death and drugs!

I really don’t know how to describe an album like Balloonerism, it’s so whacky and all over the place, yet extremely grounded. Mac really dives into his own mortality here, but seems to be very unconcerned with the concept of death. His nonchalance’s about the consequences of anything while under the cosmic scope really drive home just how much he’s been thinking about the idea of death and an afterlife. He talks almost as if he knows something we ... read more

Mac Miller - Circles
94

What a fucking shout from beyond the grave dude. Thanks Mac! We still all love ya down here bud.

I had the pleasure of doing this review back home at my parents place in Pittsburgh (North Side), which was intentional because I obviously feel very connected to him when I’m back here, so what better timing, am I right?

Circles is such a fun way for Mac to build off of what he accomplished in Swimming. It’s got those same atmospheric synths, but his focus shifts towards the usage of ... read more

Mac Miller - Swimming
95

An album that feels like a hug.

Mac’s understanding of himself has always been truly admirable, but we’ve never seen him like this before. He’s just out here with us man, it feels like he’s right next to me on the couch. We’re in his presence and he is simply sharing his thoughts with us, so poetically, yet direct.

Swimming shows off Mac’s evolution in synth work and has some awesome vocal layering. His adlibs are classic Mac, having fun with his songs, but ... read more

John Mayer - Continuum
92

When I first started playing guitar, that decision was heavily inspired by this album. John Mayer, regardless of what mainstream media has to say, is an incredible fucking musician. I was lucky enough to see him play with Dead and Co. and Jazz Fest and the man can just fuckin PLAY. I’m not gonna sit here and say this album is the greatest collection of guitar work there is, but I will say there isn’t a single section of this album that is anywhere close to being bad. Continuum has ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - Flower Boy
92

Tyler is gay! This synth loaded, light, vibey album is a beautiful exploration of Tyler’s sexuality and I could not love it more. This was easily the most developed and mature album that Tyler, the Creator had dropped at the time, both lyrically and in its production, and it’s aged incredibly over the past decade. It’s also awesome how many people he got to see his vision on this project, because every single feature absolutely kills it on every song (I miss Tyler working with ... read more

Saba - CARE FOR ME
96

What an incredible display of vulnerability and talent. Saba’s processing his trauma right in front of us and taking his rap game to the next level. Incredible jazz drums and horns throughout every beat, flows over each one perfectly, and not a single wasted lyric. The openness on Broken Girls, the rage in Life, the storytelling in Prom/King, and exposing his wounds through ever track. Don’t even fucking get me started on how incredible The Fighter is with its metaphors (I’ll ... read more

Milky Chance - Living in a Haze
82

Milky Chance goes DISCO! The German duo picks up two new band members and continues to recreate themselves. This is by far the most electronic sounds they’ve used in any of their work and WOW that shit works. Synchronize rattles off the inside of your head like a pinball, the synths on Frequency of Love cradle you in its arms, and Living in a Haze feels like pure ENERGY. The funk in their rhythms glides through this album with incredible pace and they find a way to put groove into every ... read more

Oliver Tree - Cowboy Tears
75

Cowboy Tears is by no means a top album for me, but no matter how often I revisit it, I’m always surprised by how many of the lyrics I know and how much I enjoy it. This is Oliver’s best work in my opinion, which is ironic because it’s also what I consider to be his least “Oliver Tree” sounding album. Here, we see Oliver trade out the heavy, edgy stuff we’d heard prior for acoustic guitars, but we still get sprinkles of his electronic side on songs like Get ... read more

D'Angelo - Untitled (How Does It Feel)
100

I have listened to this song 100 times, and I still do not know How it Feels.

FlooringCo. - Vacancy
100

This is what Indie Rock is all about and they NAILED it. The second half of this song is fucking perfect; all four band members firing on all cylinders. Incredible backing vocals, great guitar, dude’s voice is insane, and what a fucking baseline during it all. Truly great work here from FlooringCo.

again&again - i hate it
NR

What a fucking great breakup song, it perfectly encapsulates the feeling of missing someone, regardless of how long it's been. "I see you in every single person that I meet, and I'm sorry"😩 To no surprise, Juicebox Caviar's voice in the chorus hits like CRACK. Definitely something I will be coming back to for years to come, even if I'm not going through a breakup.

Mac Miller - Turkey Love
100

Unironically the most Mac Miller thing that Mac ever made. So goofy and unserious, yet he continues "free-styling" for over twenty minutes. I guarantee everyone in the studio was on the floor laughing their asses off. It also manages to somehow not sound bad whatsoever, like it is a sonically pleasing song. Whenever I really miss Mac, I find myself constantly coming back to this project because, to me, it feels like the best representation of who he was; a fun, light-hearted soul who ... read more

I am amazed that in my 24 years of life, no one I’ve met had listened to this album before me. I know they’re “underground”, but how the fuck do more hip/hop fans not know about this??? Beautiful sampling and production, great storytelling, and incredible lyricism on some of the most niche topics in rap. The 3 song run of Brain Cell, America Loves Gangsters, and Never Know Why is absolutely brain melting and The Light is one of the best album enders that I’ve ... read more

Songs: Ohia - The Magnolia Electric Co.

Possibly the best that southern rock has ever sounded.

Racing Mount Pleasant - Racing Mount Pleasant
100

2025 AOTY. Incredible instrumentation, beautifully poetic lyrics, and absolutely fucking incredible chemistry from every band member on full display in every single song. Would cut off a finger to be able to see them live; cannot wait for what’s next to come for Racing Mount Pleasant.

P.S, if you’re calling this a BC,NR ripoff, you’re a hoe.

Juicebox Caviar - close
100

Quite literally the most underrated song I’ve ever heard. The guitar is so fitting and catchy, the lyrics are perfect, depicting attachment issues better than anything I’ve ever heard, and the way he screams “don’t wanna let you go!” right before the second chorus scratches my brain soooo so so well. All of this sets up for the second chorus to come together magnificently; just so packed full of emotion I spent an entire year clinging to this song and, I regret ... read more
