Has some absolute BANGERS, but the rest of the album is just decent at best, so it balances out. Walkin' Back to Georgia, Time in a Bottle, You Don't Mess Around With Jim, and Operator carry this album.
You can NOT be unhappy while listening to this. Literally just the best feel-good music out there. Truly makes me feel so nice. Great flute playing or whatever kind of jugs they’re using, and such a constant album. Every track is just so good and it never drags or gets fatiguing to listen to. It keeps you engaged and having a good time through the whole listen!
It's okay. There is some great bass and drum playing, but my lord, are those vocals abrasive. He sounds like a squealing chipmunk on speed. I just can't get over the vocals. Makes sense that my favorite track was by far "a over die"
Immensely talented musicians and their musical knowledge are clearly displayed on this LP, but there is absolutely NO reason for there to be two over twenty-minute-long tracks. Each song doesn't flow on its own or justify its insane length. It kind of just drifts along and never really reaches a destination. This easily could have been split into ten different racks, which would have benefited the LP greatly. The track lengths make me compare it to Godspeed You, Black Emperor and Miles ... read more
Some great moment for sure but holy fucking shit I hate everything about whoever is playing the saxophone. They have the most nauseating tone of all time and they are the defitnioj of a one trick pony with their incessant religion of the same lick at NASEUM. I truly can’t understate how big of a disappointment it was to be so excited to hear this album, them to met with the most tasteless sax playing I’ve ever heard. Aside from that, the instrumentation is actually quite nice. The ... read more
Just some great jazz through and through. Stellar performances from the sax, trumpet, drums, and stand-up bass (Seriously, listen to those bass lines.) Very revolutionary for the genre and very influential. I feel that this is amazing for its time, but compared to some other jazz musicians that came after and expanded on what Ornette was dipping his toes in on this album, it doesn't quite hold up as being excellent. Pleasently surprised with this, every song ended up on my playlist, but it ... read more
Yeah don’t even ask me how they made it better cause I have NO fucking clue. The musical talent of this group is quite literally unparalleled and the lackluster crowd in this live recording should all be euthanized cause I would be losing my ever loving mind hearing Opus, Science Fair, and Basketball Shoes live.
I see the appeal. This isn’t something that I would ever find myself listening to by my own merit, but if I were to hear it somewhere I wouldn’t want to gouge my ears out per say. This was a surprisingly fun listen and I thought one of the most impressive aspects of this LP is the consistency. Al thought it was quite consistent, I think that the album could have used more variety in terms of musicality. I wouldn’t mind the 17 track length if there was just a minimal amount of ... read more
(Extended) My fucking ass. She adds a singular track, and it's one of the most overplayed, deplorable excuses of a "song" in her entire discography.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to my first controversial review. I found this album very disappointing—Lorde's vocals on this sound far too raspy and high for her range. I understand using that kind of strained falsetto as a form of emphasis or a tool for a couple of songs, but when your voice has such a low and rich timbre, I don't think you should switch up your vocal delivery for a whole album. This LP kind of seems like a derivative of her contemporaries, quite frankly. ... read more
Incredibly ambitious and instrumentally lush, but lacks cohesion and is quite convoluted. The first five tracks are nowhere near as enjoyable as the rest of the album so for that I can only rate it so high. Very respectable album, but I believe it could have been more concise, and it was just a little misguided. Kamasi is an extraordinary saxophonist and composer, but he was in a little too far over his head with this one.
This album takes a while to get used to for a multitude of reasons. 1. The songs are more like musical Odyessys rather than a formulaic song with a clear-cut melody, bridge, and things like that. 2. The repetition of the raspy bass hits is pretty hard to digest during the first couple of listens. 3. You have to go out of your way to understand what he is saying.
Although having said all that, after listening to it about 3 times now, I can confidently say that this is one of the most unique ... read more
Just an absolute banger from front to finish, not a single weak track on this LP. Truly a timeless classic. The athletics to the sound are so appealing to me and I just can’t stop listening. This and Bitches Brew are two of the most forward thinking and progressive jazz-fusion albums to date.
Amazing lyricism, insanely groovy sound scapes and the epitome of R&B soul. I feel that some of the tracks lengths are a bit self indulgent at times and they could be a little more concise without the sacrifice of the grandiose topics he’s singing about and the super flowy, vast sonic landscapes. I feel that some of the tracks kind of blend in to each other and I find it very hard to remember how songs go unlike something with an enticing hook or chorus. It is immaculate at getting ... read more
I do love the interpersonal approach to the pop genre and I’d say it’s some of the best pop I’ve heard in a long long while. In terms of personal enjoyment I can only go so high with this because although it is amazing in the genre of pop I just can’t get that into it for some reason. The lyricism is great and I love the groovy bombastic boom bap beats and retro futuristic approach but it is just not my preferred sound. I would say this is still a must- hear especially ... read more
An indefatigable hip-hop classic. It really can’t get much better than this, this is the quintessential hip-hop record. Nas is at the absolute top of his game in every sense of the word. N.Y. State of Mind is one of the best songs ever made in the history of music. I cannot recommend this enough.
