While I wasn't blown away by this album, I also inexplicably liked it a lot more than I probably should have. I will (almost) never be disappointed by James Murphy production
Not exactly sure who the target audience for this would have been back in the day, but it HITS. I struggle to rate it much higher because it is 12 pretty similar sounding songs with layered crooning but her voice is gorgeous and this album really stirs up a nice atmosphere
I think in theory I'd like this album more than Short N Sweet because it isn't as heavy on slower ballads but I feel just about the same about Man's Best Friend. The tracks keep the mood light and fun, but I can only hear Sabrina talk about how men are stupid and suck but also how much she loves having sex with them so many times
Coulda done without the whispering being THIS close to my ear if I'm being honest
I really mess with this entrancing, sort of airy approach to Indie Rock and Dance but the middle chunk of the album sort of failed a bit in keeping the more extreme elements of the album going. At least to me, at least a few too many tracks didn't stray far enough from of-the-era Indie Rock
At a certain point we gotta ignore the East Coast/West Coast debate and embrace the third option of Southern Hip Hop supremacy
Bowie really just does what he wants. He gets major mainstream success, and then he makes an album full of long instrumental Prog Rock songs with a fuck ass point-and-click adventure pc game looking cover art
After a VERY promising run of singles, Thundercat drops what could have easily been his best work to date. I think that this album is still pretty great, but a lack of strength on the later half brings the album down a bit.
the collaborators are pretty varied, but all definitely solid, undoubtedly peaking with the posthumous Mac Miller feature. The Bass playing is as funky and intricate as would be expected from Thundercat. With a Thundercat album is also going to come the quirky and ... read more
You can immediately feel the aura of 90's emanating from this album. I wish that I liked Moon Safari a bit more than I did. It has a great atmosphere that translates into a really nice sound, but I maybe just expected a bit more
A really good Soul album, making it even better that Olivia was able to really break through into the mainstream the year she released this
No WONDER The Beatles were so big the stuff coming out before them was BORING as hell you get Vocal Jazz or novelty songs
Insane powerhouse record that delivers on hedonistic and thumping goodness
I'm VERY happy that RAYE might finally rightfully have her spot in North American pop culture because she definitely deserves it.
I think this album verges into "doing too much" territory with all the orchestra and cinematics, but RAYE writes very earnestly, and the actual outcome sounds good enough to toss those criticisms aside for myself.
Similarly to her previous album, this newest release (with an admittedly stupid album title) is a series of tracks, often opened with ... read more
The more music you listen to, the more you realize that an album like this VERY rare to come by. The pure explosive passion and commitment to artistic impression is too much to ignore, and at no point did the album feel entirely predictable; something surprisingly hard to accomplish these days in Indie music
S'okay? The Dance element was nice, and Harry has a pretty decent voice but I mean the substance probably doesn't go much deeper than that
Everything else aside, Inflo is a GREAT producer. The album has this sort of grit and texture to it, paired with Cleo Sol's voice to create a great atmosphere. The album is deeply Afro-centric and the writing really comes through in some of the tracks even if they don't often deviate from the same one or two topics
At this point in April Underscores Harper Grey's career, she has essentially perfected the sound and structuring of her songs. Underscores is incredible not only at production, but striking that balance in tone between moments of deliberate calm and explosive EDM hits.
The beats are intricate and incredibly catchy, and while Wallsocket is undoubtedly more thought out and better written (being a concept album), the writing on "U" is simple if not effective at getting across what ... read more
Lands pretty close amongst the other Prog Rock acts of the era like Rush or Genesis. José Cid does a very solid job at evoking a cinematic sci-fi sound in a similar way that 2112 does
I'm still refreshed to hear real solid Post-Rock that has real edge and grit, especially without feeling too forced
