Jessie Ware - That! Feels Good!
79

If this came out when my mom was younger, she'd have busted DOWN to this in the disco clubs

I was really enjoying this album but the last stretch of songs fell a bit flat to me, which slightly soured the overall pretty positive experience

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
92

Edit: 73-->92

Edit: I was real wrong, because this is a near-flawless Post-Punk album. It's danceable at times but still wholly bleak and depressing

Thought I'd like the album a lot more than I actually did. I really like a lot of the sort of new wave post-punk type stuff, so I thought i'd like Interpol. I still thought it was decent all things considered. It's got a deep, depressing feel, and some cool guitars with synthy beats. However, I just didn't feel ... read more

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
82

For some reason, I skipped over this one when I was first listening to all of Arcade Fire's stuff. I don't think it hits the same level as their other earlier albums like Funeral or Suburbs, but I enjoyed the sound they went for here, touching on some more politically resosant themes along the way. There's some grand choir singing, with some heavy string and piano, which gives a lot of life to songs that would have been relatively plain otherwise

twenty one pilots - twenty | one | pilots
63

Some decently catchy stuff on here, if not very chained to it's release year of the 2000's. I actually thought the production was decent for the most part. Overblown and overdramatic maybe, but endearingly enough

The biggest detractor here for me were the vocal deliveries. White boy spoken word/rapping is one thing, but some of the songs had such.... odd sort of inflections with high pitch, which makes the tracks much more difficult to take seriously

The Roots - Things Fall Apart
91

An hour long album that felt like half that length just due to how smoothly each super well produced and excellently performed track flowed to the next.

The groups much earlier album 'Things Fall Apart' doesn't have the concept that really magnetized me to 'Undun,' but it has a good shot at being the better of the two musically, which may keep me coming back to it as opposed to Undun as time goes on

The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
86

EDIT: 76 --> 86

I can definitely appreciate it, and I did enjoy the album, but I'm not sure that I'm able to fully appreciate it to the degree a lot of people do (at least yet).

There's a lot going on in this album. This collaboration really takes the music to some pretty varied and decently interesting places, but the rough-around-the-edges approach to the sound sort of lost me in some places. When the album is at it's best, it delivers some genre-defining psychedelic rock

EDIT: Yup, ... read more

Danny Brown - Quaranta
85

A very personal, somewhat stripped back product from Danny. The production is (for the most part), more mellow and deliberate, which pairs with Danny's introspective lyrics. The features are also pretty good, and compliment him well.

As the self-titled opening track says: Quaranta means 40 in Spanish. The album is about Danny coming to terms with his age, and reflecting on his early life and how his career has progressed over the course of time. Despite preferring his style in previous ... read more

The Strokes - The New Abnormal
87

The album that introduced me to the Strokes, and honestly might still be my favourite of their stuff. The title says a decent bit about the content of the album. It isn't really wildly experimental, but it's a departure from the sort of norm in alternative rock which I've found has tended to be less and less "alternative" as time goes on.

Each song has personality, bringing some very addictive guitar lines and a couple vocal performances that I feel really challenged Julian ... read more

Radiohead - Kid A
96

Not quite what I would have expected going into it, but MAN was it such a unique and really cool listening experience. Kid A is ambient, moody, and very sparse when it comes to lyrics. It's the kind of album that acts more as an experience than anything else.

Where as OK Computer was a sort cautionary tale of technology and the ramifications of the "social network," Kid A seems to embrace the sci-fi, digital dystopian hellscape of what people thought the future would look like in ... read more

Daniel Johnston - Hi, How Are You: The Unfinished Album
75

I'm a little lost when it comes to how I should tackle discussing or reviewing something like 'Hi, How Are You.' For how simple the instrumentation is, it feels like a densely packed product that I'm missing some key part of to fully appreciate. Listening to it, I couldn't help but feel like I shouldn't be. Like it was some kind of found footage horror tape that'd curse me to die in a week after listening to it or something.

From a strictly emotional level, I felt something listening to this ... read more

GZA - Liquid Swords
91

This album, in my mind, represents some of the quintessential Boom Bap and 90's hip-hop (that I've heard). Everything about the album from the production, to the vocal deliveries, to the lyrics just exudes confidence and sophistication. It's relatively simple and to the point, but executed with so much finesse.

I'm not educated enough to say if sampling film dialogue was explored in hip hop prior to this album's release, but it's interesting to see what may potentially be one of the earlier ... read more

Kero Kero Bonito - Intro Bonito
57

It's cute, it can be catchy, but I just don't really vibe with it.

Despite being born in Japan, the singer sounds like her knowledge of the country comes exclusively from anime. A random "sayonara" will be thrown in to fill space, which feels kind of jarring and pandering to the whole "weeb" stereotype.

The video game sound effects and other silly little samples are a cute idea, but I don't think they're executed very well. Fitting that the band samples some sound effects ... read more

SOPHIE - OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES
85

What is this pink and blue flag and why do all the good electronic producers come from there?

Sophie's only full length album before tragically passing is a very interesting blend of distorted, pounding bass and vocals, paired with ambient and deliberate moments of quiet. I knew that I wouldn't necessarily completely click with the project at first, so I waited to give a concrete review after a second listen. My thoughts didn't drastically change, but I can appreciate the ... read more

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
87

Warm, inviting folk that seems perfectly engineered for forest frolicking

The Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2
95

Edit: 74 -->95

The Glow, Pt. 2 has some incredibly beautifully written and conveyed lyricism, but I found I just didn't really click with it musically. The instrumentation is often quite barebones, which tended to disengage me from the project.

I'm quite certain a future listen to improve my experience, once I'm able to better connect with the music

(Edit): yeah.... :(
genuinely do NOT know what I was on about the instrumentation is one of the best parts

Injury Reserve - Floss
82

at first, I wasn't feeling this project as much as their previous mixtape: Live from the Dentist Office. As "Floss" continues, though, it really starts to shine through as a slightly more developed set of songs, both in the experimental beats and some more personal lyrical content

PinkPantheress - Heaven knows
82

Musically and lyrically, PinkPantheress hasn't evolved a ton from her earlier work, but the production feels more fluid and varied on her debut full length album, and I ain't complaining about getting more PinkPantheress

Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
84

Incredibly mature and well put together project for someone so young's musical debut. Musically, it sounds really nice, and the passion from Kate make most of the songs engaging.

Wuthering Heights bumps the score up at least 4 points

Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher
82

only gets better as I continue to engage with the devastating lyrics. Really symbolic I think of the feel of the time when it came out in a few different ways, but pretty timeless in it's appeal.

Album cover is the ant in my kitchen watching me pour Franks Red Hot directly onto them
