Veteran feels like such a powerhouse within experimental and industrial hip hop. Peggy was doing things on here that really haven't been met before or after the album's release. I don't think that 'Veteran' is the greatest experimental hip hop release ever, but there's so many entertaining and engaging ideas packed into the track list that really just cannot be glazed over
A solid early project from Little Simz that delivers some pretty good songs and a consistent sound, but tended to stretch thin towards the end, doubly so upon subsequent listens
For being a sort of "novelty" rap act, Fox actually delivers on a super solid rap album in it's own right
The Cherry Bomb album art has truly had an irreversible effect on comedic rap album covers
Imagine living in the 90s and popping a tab of acid while listening to this? This is what the older generations have taken from me
Absolutely incredible concept, executed very well. Even without the narrative, 'Undun' would still manage to be a pretty solid soul-inspired rap album, but it is absolutely made by the story.
Shamelessly, The Roots would steal the concept of a rap album with a narrative played in reverse from Kendrick Lamar 4 years in the past. Some interesting themes pop up depending on the order the tracklisting is played. From front to back, the story begins with death and introspection, and transitions ... read more
Some of the greatest, most dynamic and atmospheric instrumental solos I've ever heard. It's enough to make you feel like you're being hurdled through an intergalactic wormhole.
Interesting that Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar are rated as the lowest tracks, because I enjoyed that stretch of the album the most
Very touching tribute to a state I have... decent(?) knowledge on due to it bordering Ontario, Canada. I think theming albums after all the states is a really cool concept, so it's too bad Sufjan won't get around to doing all of them.
Definitely don't get all the references in the song titles, but I think that's really just not the point of the album. It's a very nice folk experience, with lush and somber sounds to pretty well emulate the great outdoors
The Beatles went in such a bizarre direction musically (beginning with Revolver) if you look at the bigger picture of the time. I can really appreciate that they not only tried some new stuff in their newer releases, but that it pretty majorly paid off, too.
I love the whimsical, psychedelic sound of 'Magical Mystery Tour'. The focus is placed very heavily on trippy instrumentals, but this isn't anything particularly new for the group. The weird and abstract vocal effects and subject matter ... read more
S'alright I guess? Got some real good songs on it, and I can tell it's a decently well put together album, but I don't really connect with the twangy sort of country-rock vibe so much, which tended to get rather repetitive towards the last stretch of 'Out of Time'
Danger Mouse continues to be an insanely underrated producer, and DOOM continues to still be DOOM. His flow is the standard quality you can expect from him, albeit with what feel like some kind of nonsensical lyrics thrown in. The whole theming around Adult Swim characters was fun enough for me, but it'd probably be better if I watched any of the shows referenced. I found these voice acted skits to be way more tolerable for me than the standard radio show samples DOOM is known for
Such a phenomenal rap album. Every beat is a perfectly complementary experimental blend of distortion, synth, and percussion. The lyrics are so incredibly diverse and thought out, delving into themes of historical and contemporary racism.
Pompeii is a genuinely haunting song amidst a variety of tones and subject matter
EDIT: after quite a few listens over a long time, I think I can now say that I think this album is perfect. Every beat is perfect, every emotive and nuanced vocal performance from Lorde is perfect, and every single bit of songwriting stabs like a jagged knife. Her writing is so poignant and meaningful with so little
The title really says it all. It IS melodrama. It can be hard to remember how young Lorde was when she made this album because of how amazing it is, but Lorde was young, and it ... read more
Dua Lipa has honestly (in my opinion) been kind of dominating the mega mainstream pop scene for a while now, and this album has sort of proved it. Such a fun and fresh synth and disco project.
Comparing this to some of the greats in music, obviously Future Nostalgia may not entirely stack up, but it's got some of the freshest and most unique pop singles to really dominate the radio scene. My only complaint is the lack of diversity in the subject matter. There are 11 songs and two general ... read more
Definitely one of the coolest concepts for an album cover, and a fitting one. The music does feel alive and breathing in a way, mixing electronic elements with some sort of vaguely nature reminiscent bubbles and other notes in the production. I like the happy feel, and I love the complexity and charm of the instrumentals
Proof that throwing in a little French makes anything way more vibesy
Do they just tell Ride to leave the stage when they want to perform this stuff live?
I thought it was a lot of fun for what it basically is; Death Grips minus the dominating vocals from M.C. Ride. That isn't quite a fair assessment, as the vocals provided by the remaining members lend themselves to a more straightforward rock record inspired by elements of hip-hop, instead of Death Grips being the other way around.
I don't feel like I'm listening to half a Death Grips album listening to this ... read more
I don't normally make an "edit score x-->y" but I feel like I should say my score went from 78 to 90
When I watched the Hivemind Fans Favourite Albums Bracket, I thought they were clinically insane for making Yeezus the winner. I still think it's kind of crazy to put it above something like To Pimp A Butterfly, but I can at least see where they're coming from.
You could probably call almost of Kanye's album his "experimental opus" or whatever. I'm inclined to say that ... read more
As someone who doesn't really listen to metal or hardcore music at all, this is what most of it sounds like to me.
I went through a bit of an emotional rollercoaster listening to Supernova. After hearing the intro, I was ready for some cool stuff. Following the first couple songs, my gut reaction was "oh god this is what I'm listening to for the next half an hour. I wasn't really huge on the sound at first, and I found some of the lyrics to be sort of 'meh'. As time went on though, I did ... read more
Something about this specific brand of glitchpop really does it for me. Crystal Castles brings a unique and interesting sound that I'm not sure has really been properly emulated by any other groups since I do think hypothetical retro videogame is a good descriptor for the general chiptune aesthetic, which is a sound I happen to vibe with on this project a lot
