one word to describe this album: creeping.
not creepy - although there's some aspect of that, too - this album feels like you've been plopped into the new york city underground, cautiously tiptoeing through the back alleys and peering into doorways to see these songs play out. i love watching fagen & becker lay the brushstrokes down on these gorgeous auditory paintings.

been having a real moment with this album lately. judee's voice seems plain, but it's somehow familiar, enveloping you like a hug from an old friend as you sink into the beautiful, lush harmonies and incredibly deep lyrics of her debut album. it feels like you're stepping into judee's world here, dark and shadowy with wooden crosses on the walls, but it's a cozy little place nonetheless. i'd like to stay here a while

i do not keep up with whatever the ARG going on with this band is lol. but since this album released during COVID, accompanying me through the strangest years of my life (and i was going through middle school! maaan) i remember it fondly by my side. relistening now, it's just as beautiful and harmonic and awesome to listen to as the day it came out. it still sounds fresh, the music is so groovy and dallon weekes wears his influences on his sleeves (from the gallows is such a good ink spots ... read more
this album is not one i listen to in full very frequently but some of the tracks on it absolutely have my heart. unfortunately i can't actually recommend it to anyone because a) they wont get it unless they have steely dan brainworms like me b) its almost an hour long and includes a 10 minute song and hey im a bob dylan fan i can take that but its not for everybody. all that aside, SOMEHOW this is where my ultimate favorite steely dan song is, whaaaattt??? well, honey, how about a kiss for ... read more
i don't think it's bad! it's not great, either, but everyone involved clearly had a grand time making it, and there's some cute songs i enjoy on here. :) a little sad steely dan didn't go out with a big bang and more of a fizzle (rip, walter becker!) but honestly, im sure the idea of being two company guys reclining in their seats and sipping cocktails as their tenure at work comes to an end is exactly what f&b wanted.

oh mamamamama oh ma mum take a look now at what your boy has done! great album for dirtbags, slackers, wasteoids, and other vestigial members of society like myself. the protagonist of these songs doesn't come across well - he's cruel, bitter, desperate, horny, and feeling various levels of shame about it. a collection of good tunes with crazily well-written lyrics, groovy rhythm the whole way through, and leaves you feeling just a little pissed off at your parents, symbolically. ... read more
