JAY-Z - The Blueprint
92

Decided to have this be my first Jay listen, and yeah this is as amazing as advertised. Jay’s rapping is outstanding throughout, but the real star of the show is Kanye’s production, as it’s no wonder he blew up shortly after this with how fresh and catchy his chipmunk soul production still sounds to this day. It also helps that manage to get prime Eminem at his absolute most prime here. Also just wanted to say that even though this is 2000s hip hop I’m still ... read more

Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT
93

As with all Billie Eilish albums, this one needed a little time to click with me, but once it did I just can’t stop listening to it, this is probably her most gorgeous and consistent album up to this point in her career even though I’m still waiting for her to release something as explosive as the debut.

Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring
62

A little bit like Lauryn Hill and Igor, this is one of those albums where there’s obviously a lot of good elements, but nothing really jumps out to me as being especially great.

Miles Davis - Birth of the Cool
84

One of the slickest and (yes) coolest jazz albums I’ve heard, no wonder it spawned its own genre within jazz

Peter Gabriel - So
88

Even the rare points on this album where the songs are kind of weak still aren’t bad because of the utterly absurd production, as not a single moment here sounds anything less than immaculate.

It also helps that three of my favorite songs of the 80s are on here.

Father John Misty - Ballad of the Dying Man
95

This one is great, and a lot more self aware and less annoying than Pure Comedy

Father John Misty - Pure Comedy
48

Fuck it, I’m ready to stop waiting for this song to click and just say that I have never found a folk song more juvenile or preachy than this one

It only gets this high a score because it’s performed and produced fairly well, but I genuinely find this insufferable.

Shame cause I do really like Ballad of the Dying Man, and I hope this guy realizes the irony of releasing a song two singles later about a guy convinced his thoughts are worth more than everyone else’s

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
85

I’m usually very distrustful of albums this nihilistic in viewpoint, but in this case the atmosphere is strong and unsettling enough that it feels earned, although I don’t feel like the lyricism is anywhere near the level of the musicianship on this.

The Who - Who's Next
95

As far as classic rock goes, it’s hard to find a more passionate and anthemic album out there.

Uboa - Impossible Light
93

Been meaning to give this a listen for a while, and yeah this is one of the best and most intense albums of the year.

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
100

Might honestly be my pick for the best written album of all time.

Like Conor Oberst was on some next level shit on this one.

Zach Bryan - The Great American Bar Scene
91

There isn’t a moment on this that doesn’t work to some degree, I’m only taking off points because it’s both a little too long and a little too samey to truly be a masterpiece, but I think this is a little better than his last one.
Would love to see Zach branch out a bit more sonically in the future, but as of right now it’s fine because MY GOD this man can write.

Childish Gambino - Because the Internet
48

Wow I REALLY didn’t like this, which is disappointing because I actually DID like Awaken My Love quite a bit, but this just feels extremely derivative of more interesting and more experimental rap to me while only rarely adding its own original ideas

Shaboozey - Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going
51

Damn this dude really had us going with A Bar Song, huh?

Dasha - Austin (Boots Stop Workin')
72

Am I the only one who’s actually been totally fine with most of the TikTok hits this year?
Like just because they come from a really annoying place doesn’t mean they’re not great music.
Anyway yeah, this is pretty solid if unspectacular as far as country pop goes.

Bring Me The Horizon - There Is a Hell Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven Let's Keep It a Secret.
78

Their still clearly working out the kinks in their sound here as there are points when they sound like any other generic metal band (Blacklist) and moments that have interesting ideas but don’t quite work for me (Don’t Go), but this is still a really solid release from a band that was clearly on the rise creatively, and the high points are exhilarating.

Bring Me The Horizon - Top 10 staTues tHat CriEd bloOd
100

Catchiest song of the fucking year

Bring Me The Horizon - Sempiternal
93

Probably their most consistent album, and the moment where Oli really came into his own as a vocalist.

JPEGMAFIA - don't rely on other men
68

Am I the only one who’s starting to feel like Peggy has just kinda lost the energy and creativity he broke through with? His production is still great but vocally a lot of times it’s just felt like he’s sleepwalking recently.

Djo - End of Beginning
83

Fantastic groove, and full of charm as well, even if it isn’t the most groundbreaking or complex thing ever.

To everyone who hates on every song that blows up on TikTok just because of where it came from, grow the fuck up.
