Charli xcx - True Romance

reviewing every charli xcx album, pt. 1;

i gotta admit, i didnt expect too much out of this project as its her first full-length solo album, but it actually delivered. the production is surprisingly good, but not on the level of her future albums. there are some absolute bops here, especially 'nuclear seasons'. i love the beat and production on 'grins'. there are some bland moments, but overall it was a fun listen. it definitely leaves clues to charli's future greatness, while still being very ... read more

Morton Subotnick - Silver Apples of the Moon
95

seeing as i want to get deeper into electronic music, this is the natural place to start. this album was the first to be released by an official label. morton famously poured 12 hour days into this project every day for a year, and it shows. he manages soundscapes so immense that even with today’s technology, over 50 years later, its nearly impossible to replicate. each sound is meticulously crafted to contribute to the atmosphere, and they all build on one another. the enormous synth ... read more

Ravi Shankar - Portrait of Genius

reviewing every ravi shankar album, pt. 10;

i feel like there is less of ravi’s playing than usual. there is a lot more flute and percussion features, whoch are great, but they dont manage the same impact as ravi’s refined but emotional playing style. song like ‘dhun’ where ravi is prominent are great, but there are long stretches on the album without ravi. i love his playing on this project, as to be expected. sometimes ravi just feels like a feature artist on his own ... read more

Nourished By Time - Erotic Probiotic 2

no album has made me feel the way that this one does. theres something ethereal about it that completely surrounds my brain. its impossible to explain the feelings that this album evokes. despite not being overtly psychedelic, it somehow has the same effect that echoes by pf has on me. theres something absolutely magical about this project, and the fact that this is just a debut is mindblowing. its definitely not perfect musically, but it has perfect vibes. one of the coolest albums ive ever ... read more

Yxngxr1 - Front Porch

i gotta be honest, for some reason i thought this was gonna be some kind of cloud rap album. needless to say, it was not.

i love the bass work on this project, the drumming is pretty cool, and the lyrics are funny and poignant enough to keep my attention for the most part. the instrumentals usually do the bare minimum to get the job done, but they are effective. i especially like the song 'nostalgia calls', as it encapsulates really well the feeling of life in the midwest. there are some cool ... read more

Charlotte de Witte - Power of Thought EP
49

this project didnt really do it for me. it really did nothing to me, honestly. there were some cool sounds that i appreciated, such as the rattling magnets on the first track, but overall there was almost nothing memorable. i havent heard any of charlotte's other work, so it is definitely possible that i am missing the whole point, but i found this album to be a slog to get through. the production was pretty good in terms of panning and mixing, but it seems like there just wasnt much to pan or ... read more

Balming Tiger - January Never Dies
77

woah. this was a lot.
this was not what i was expecting at all, but i was pleasantly surprised. i particularly love their use of horns, especially on 'btb' and '5:5 dharma'. balming tiger takes quite a few risks with this project, and for the most part they pay off. there's a huge variety of music presented here, and they execute a majority of the genres in a fresh enough way to stay at least a little interesting. unfortunately, there are several areas where the album kinda drags along, with ... read more

Corefish - SPLIT

after being incredibly impressed with corefish's newest album, i decided to check out the rest of the discog. and i wasnt disappointed! this is a very solid album. although the production isnt quite as outstanding as their other album, it is still pretty great. the songwriting is good, especially on 'sediment', and the melodies are incredibly catchy. the middle few songs of this album are some of the best pop songs ive ever heard. although im not the biggest fan of the occasional pitched down ... read more

Corefish - KITE

THE PRODUCTION IS CRAZY! this album feels so crisp and tightly woven, incorporating many hyperpop and plunderphonics influences and blending them beautifully. this is great pop. corefish has a voice that fits the instrumentation so well, and they have an incredible knack for writing consistently catchy melodies. this is the first ive ever heard of corefish, and it makes me sad that ive been missing out this long. this album is so underrated. easily one of my favorite pop albums of the year. ... read more

Ravi Shankar - Music of India: Rāgas and Tālas

reviewing every ravi shankar album pt. 9;

this album is in the same vein as ravi's previous two Angel Records projects. it is pretty laid back, and focuses more on creating an atmosphere and emotion. it feels like he is somehow floating his hand over the fretboard to make sound. there are many parts on this album that simply transport me to another realm, such as the timid but hugely impactful riff upward at the quarter-way point on 'raga jogiya'. the whole record has this alien energy to it, ... read more

Shahid Parvez - Immortal Series Sitar Sublime Shahid Parvez
84

after listening to so much ravi, i decided to branch out and listen to some different sitar players. and im glad i did! shahid is absolutely amazing at sitar, and rivals ravi in a multitude of ways. however, i dont think his ability to evoke emotion is quite as intense as ravi. i really really like this album, though. it does tend quite a bit toward the long side, but ultimately there is enough enjoyable moments blanketed throughout that it isnt a slog to get through, at least most of the time. ... read more

Taylor Swift - The Cruelest Summer
65

the only reason my summer was cruel was that taylor didnt drop this in time for summer EL OH EL (please clap)

even though the mixing on the live version is pretty awful, i still really dig this performance of cruel summer. overall, i wish they leaned more into it, but you cant expect taylor to take many (or any) risks i guess...

Ravi Shankar - Improvisations & Theme From Pather Panchali
98

reviewing every ravi shankar album pt. 8;

this feels like a natural sequel to his previous album, 'India's Master Musician'. but somehow.... even better!!??
this album is incredible. the wide array of emotions that it covers swing from melancholy to hopeful to happy to depressing. theres a song on here for literally any occasion. i don't really know how ravi keeps out doing himself, but here we are. i strongly considered giving this a ten. but i still think that ravi can make something even ... read more

Ravi Shankar - India's Master Musician

reviewing every ravi shankar album, pt. 7;

ravi's 1956 album 'three ragas' drew me in with incredibly fast, sweeping notes and unparalleled precision from ravi. this project, on the other hand, works to demonstrate his raw musicality. it feels as though every note is purposeful, placed there to evoke the exact emotions that ravi wants me to feel. he manages to be surgical with his execution while still keeping a feeling of candidness, allowing me to be fully immersed in the album. this album ... read more

Bill Laswell, Sonny Sharrock, John Zorn, Fred Frith, Derek Bailey, Charles K. Noyes - Improvised Music New York 1981

this project is... strange. it's too abrasive to be an ambient album, but its too ambient to be a full on free jazz album. there are some parts that this works very well, making me feel uneasy and just.. wrong. and thats partly what its supposed to do. but then the other half of the time it just actually sounds like someone turned on the food disposal. i didnt get very bored during my first listen, as its always interesting to hear what strange sound they can add next. but, unfortunately, that ... read more

John Coltrane - The Olatunji Concert: The Last Live Recording
98

did they record this with a microwave while underwater while in a microwave?

i love the absolute emotion behind this performance, nothing quite capture humanity's battle with mortality than coltrane's primal screams. the fact that coltrane knew he was going to die soon makes his shrieking so impactful. this concert is raw emotion, through and through. incredible.

Ravi Shankar - The Sounds of India

reviewing every ravi shankar album, pt. 6;

i absolutely adore that he starts this off calmly explaining the norms of raga. i love ravi so much omg, no surprise, but his playing is awesome on this record. it feels like he utilizes different rhythms than he normally does, which leads to a really neat listening experience, regardless of if youve heard ravi's music before. as per usual, the backing instrumentation is very unintrusive, so ravi is able to just vibe out. this album is a lot calmer ... read more
