william crooks - flowers

this album just goes hard. the flows on hands make me lose my mind every time. every song hits hard, but some of them are not super great. i love the first 4 songs though! this project is great for working out or going to vote or sumn. good album full of bangers!

a pretty good pop album! the production is alright, the lyricism is alright, and the songs are interesting. the album doesnt overstay its welcome, delivering some relatable and sweet songs and then dipping out. it didnt leave a super long-lasting reaction in me, but it is quite a good album if you are interested in hyperpop like me! give it a listen!!

Sampha - Lahai

a spiritual experience. ive been anticipating this album for as long as i can remember, and it delivered. this album is absolutely gorgeous. its incredible. sampha's voice is nothing short of majestic, and the instrumentals are tailored perfectly to fit his angelic voice. the lyrics are relevant and deep, the features deliver, the production is great! theres really nothing specific to complain about with this album. fantastic, and easily one of my favorites of the year. well worth the wait!!

8485 - Personal Protocol

this is a pretty alright hyperpop album! there are some good lyrics in here, as well as pretty good production! everything comes together pretty well, but there's still a little to be desired. some of the songs get stale, and the project can drag, which is the main downside. overall, a very fun album, worth listening if you are into hyperpop!

fun listen!! after listening to their newest album, i wanted to relisten to their old classic. some of the lyrics were a bit much for my taste, but there was plenty of killer lines to counteract that. the production ranges from okay to great. the instrumentals can feel empty at times, but there is enough variation to never get boring. overall, i strongly prefer wallsocket, but this album is very good as well! worth the listen!

extremely diverse, very spunky, and consistently fascinating! the songwriting switches from being hilarious to being super hard-hitting. the instrumentation is fascinating and very well-produced. overall, this album was a little long for my tastes, but it had enough highlights to keep me invested through the whole thing. this is definitely worth a listen, and it lives up to the hype!

Jane Remover - Census Designated

this album really utterly tore me apart and now i'm expected to give this a good score?
seriously, this album rocks. the production is incredible, and the writing is so brutal that it cuts straight through me. my main critique is the length, but most of it is absolutely awesome, and it made me cry many times. the end of lips is absolutely incredible. definitely worth the listen!! literally cannot wait to see where jane remover goes after this!!

bl4ck m4rket c4rt - Today I Laid Down

this my 100th review!!

wow. this album is unreal. every song just made me FEEL. everybody is talking about how great the production is, and i absolutely agree, but the songwriting strikes straight to my soul. this is incredible, and the fact that a 17 year old made this is genuinely mind-boggling. fantastic. easily one of my favorite projects of the year! definitely give this a listen!! its short and well worth every single second. phenomenal.

Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
89

rollins thick tone will never be matched, and it is front stage in this impressive project. great all around.

Pharoah Sanders - Elevation
97

this is the type of stuff that gets me believing in god.
pharoah sanders delivers once again, crafting gorgeous soundscapes with his signature use of bells, chimes, and shakers to create an all-encompassing atmosphere. his gorgeous playing is complimented perfectly by the absolutely amazing piano playing of bonner and the relatively simple but brilliant bass of calvin hill. the album is mixed very well for a live album, each instrument is clear and beautiful when it needs to be. overall just ... read more

jaimie branch - Fly or Die

i love how jaimie can just effortlessly float over anything with her trumpet. although there were some repetitive and boring moments, this album was overall pretty enjoyable. i really enjoy jaimie's playing, so i wish there was more of that. the drums were very tight for most of it, but they got pretty repetitive. overall it wasnt bad by any means, but im not gonna revisit every song here. i particularly enjoyed the themes and the title track. 'the storm' had a really cool atmosphere, but it ... read more

Jo Lawry - Acrobats
60

i love jo's voice, but the album is a little too tame and boring for my taste. the percussion is pretty dry and the melodies are catchy but basic for the most part. when she takes big leaps with her voice it sounds incredible, and i love her vocalizations throughout. overall, there are some cool tracks, and i really like the bass work, but i dont know how much i'll be revisiting this project. if you like more contemporary vocal jazz, this is the album for you!

Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes - What Kinda Music
88

yussef and freddie collab when?

this project ROCKS. its so chill, the drumming is tight and incredible, the production is all-encompassing, the singing is laid-back and comforting, the writing is great... theres so much i love about this album. its definitely not perfect, but its an awesome intro to yussef's drumming. im actually so excited to hear more of his stuff! this is some great jazz-fusion-kind-of-soul music. also i love freddie's verse here. great album. perfect vibes for fall.

Gaddy - Tabernacle Takeover
68

the production on this project is good, but overall i wasnt super interested by it. its definitely not bad by any means, it just didnt hold my attention for the whole time. i really like the bass slides, and a lot of the sounds are pretty engaging, but these type of beats albums arent for me. i can definitely see the skill involved in creating this though, and some of the songs are very good, like 'bring the sun'. i actually enjoyed a lot of it.

pheel. - Pheel.

this instrumental beats album is pretty interesting! there are a lot of cool sounds that kept me somewhat engaged, and the production is pretty good. overall, this project was mostly enjoyable, but im not super into this genre of music. i can get bored pretty easy, so im well aware that repetitive, relaxing beats are probably not the thing for me. that being said, i did mostly enjoy this album, and its not long enough to make me annoyed or anything. i think im gonna listen to some of this ... read more

Medicine Singers - Medicine Singers

this is really cool. i love the mix of styles so much, but i feel like it could be done a little better in some songs. the production is very lush, and it really sucks you in. the singing is great, and i especially love the jaimie feature (which is how i found this album). the guitars also go really hard. i love the percussion. overall its a pretty unique, but imperfect, album with some really cool moments. its worth a listen, and im excited for their next album!

Emma Anderson - Pearlies
80

this album IS my fall playlist.

'pearlies' is an incredible pop album. i love the guitar lines, the ambient/atmospheric production, and the instantly catchy melodies. the vibes on this project are unmatched, and i finished the album feeling happier than before i listened. its just really really good chill pop. literally the perfect album to fight off the seasonal depression of winter. i gotta check out lush's work now! DEFINITELY worth the listen.

Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter Five: In the garden...

woah. this is a harrowing album.
it reminds me quite a bit of 'oh me oh my' by lonnie holley (my favorite album of the year) with its hard-hitting spoken word with sparse but impactful backing instrumentals. its not as effective as that album for me at least, but it is still a very interesting experience to listen to this album. there is some fantastic horn playing, and i like a lot of the bending and hectic orchestration. this album makes me feel. its really good. the storytelling is nothing ... read more

Carly Rae Jepsen - Tug of War
59

im a huge fan of carly rae. im not a big fan of this album. its extremely bland, the writing is basic, and the songs aren't very catchy. but its still listenable, and there are some decent songs like 'tug of war' and 'sour candy'. overall, this album left me feeling the exact same way that i went into it: nothing. i dont remember anything in here, even though it wasnt awful. the fact that i dont remember much means that it wasnt awful, but it also wasnt very good. very forgettable album, but ... read more

Rina Sawayama - RINA

woah. this is one of the best pop releases ive ever heard. the production is so punchy, the guitars are energetic, the writing is super impactful, and the singing is gorgeous. there isnt a single skip on here, although i didnt love the interludes and 'tunnel' vision as much as the rest. '10-20-40' is one of the greatest pop songs ive ever heard. ive really done myself a disservice by not listening to this sooner. if you somehow havent heard this, fix that NOW. incredible album, and i cant wait ... read more
