Jean-Michel Jarre - The Essential Jean-Michel Jarre
90

Jean-Michel Jarre is actually so goated.

It’s like a French wizard accidentally discovered space. Synths, atmosphere, melodies - brrrrrrrr. He was doing “cinematic electronic” before everyone else caught up.

Geese - 3D Country
66

There’s talent here undeniably but this whole thing is really messy and actually kinda fucking irritating . Like who goes o yes let’s put on that Geeze album on a Thursday afternoon - yeah absolutely not.

Jake Paul & Team 10 - Litmas
1

*sighs* I forgot this was a thing

Labrinth - COSMIC OPERA ACT II
70

The highs on here are really high. When this works, it sounds huge, strange, beautiful, etc. but the lows are real too. Some of the back end just kinda falls apart for me, and there are a few tracks where i’m just sitting there like what even is that. It gets a bit too caught up in its own world sometimes.

Still, i can’t really justify going lower than this because i did enjoy a lot of it. Messy album, but definitely not a bad one.

Kim Petras - Detour
78

look, i’ve always found kim petras weirdly interesting. she’s clearly capable of making incredible songs, and there are definitely tracks on Problematique and Feed the Beast that i really like, but let’s be honest, most of her projects have either been wildly inconsistent or just full-on cringe trash. i checked back and i gave Slut Pop Miami a 20/100 and Slut Pop a 39/100, which tells you everything.

FINALLY she’s made a project that feels properly consistent and ... read more

Paul McCartney - The Boys of Dungeon Lane
80

there’s something weirdly endearing about an 83 year old still making music THIS good. like not in a “aww good for him” patronising way either - this is just genuinely a strong album by one of the greatest artists of all time.

What you get from the BEST beatle (I said it) on this one is a reflective and warm record that you can feel the age in it (but in the best way!!). i think it hits the absolute heights of his best work like with the Beatles obviously, but there’s ... read more

Freddie Gibbs - RBT
80

Freddie really is one of those artists where even a 3-track EP can feel more satisfying than some people’s whole albums. A short, sharp and grimy piece that just reminds me why I love him so much in the first place.
FAVE TRACKšŸ”„: Immigrants
LEAST FAVE TRACK: - (I like all three)

20

Before getting into Kim’s debut album today, I listened to Slut Pop Miami, and yeah, I completely understand the hate.

this is repetitive, annoying, and cringey trashh.

yeule - softscars
84

If emotion was a bruise, Softscars would be the sound of pressing on it just to check if it still hurts.

Xania Monet - The Things I Didn't Say

Fuck ai slop. That's it - that's the review.

FAVE TRACKšŸ”„: None.
LEAST FAVE TRACKSāŒ: The entire concept.

6LACK - LOVE IS THE NEW GANGSTA
78

6LACK (pronounced BLACK) is back and for most of this, it’s another really solid r&b record. There’s such a calmness to this album. It doesn’t need to do too much, it just kinda hits you in the feel.

East Atlanta Love Letter by 6LACK is a super nostalgic album for me and immediately throws me back to being a 19 year old travelling europe. weirdly, i felt little bits of that again here. it’s hard to even explain properly because that time in my life was happy but ... read more

mgk - blog era boyz
52

there’s a couple catchy songs on here, but way too much of this is just uneven.

on paper this should be a lot more fun than it is. mgk and wiz doing a mixtape together called blog era boyz sounds like easy nostalgia bait, but the actual result is pretty average and inconsistent. Every time it feels like it might get going, another weak or flat song comes in and kills the momentum.

It’s not completely terrible, just kind of a waste of a fun idea. There’s a few tracks here ... read more

Future Islands - From a Hole in the Floor to a Fountain of Youth
79

I don’t think i’ve reviewed many compilations, but after my first listen of this, I realised it was one - and it changed how I listened to it.

This is basically a 20-track collection of b-sides, rare songs and older cuts from across 20 years of the band, and i’m pretty impressed by how strong a lot of it is considering that.

that’s kind of the whole appeal here really. This could’ve easily felt like scraps, but a lot of these songs are way better than ... read more

music is subjective… until it’s not.

This is awful. like properly awful. At this point i’m convinced the promo budget is doing more heavy lifting than the music ever could. i genuinely didn’t think she could make something worse than In Sexyy We Trust and i had that at a 12/100!!!! somehow she looked at that, nodded, and said yeah let’s go lower.

Its not even catchy enough to accidentally work. It just sounds stupid, lazy and cheap. The beats are dead, the hooks ... read more

Maisie Peters - Florescence
74

This feels like maisie stepping away from the big glittery pop-girl thing that's happening at the moment and making something more grounded. The whole album feels calmer, sadder, and a bit more grown up than what i expected.

The lyrics can still be a little clunky sometimes, but weirdly that kind of suits her. it makes the album feel human rather than polished within an inch of its life. and i do respect that this doesn’t sound like she’s desperately chasing another huge pop ... read more

Oliver Tree - Love You Madly Hate You Badly
75

i have such a weird relationship with oliver tree. Whenever i hear him it takes me straight back to covid times - which is especially cursed because i’m writing this with covid right now lol. i hated lockdown, but oliver tree and bo burnham were two of the weird artists i kinda really dug during that whole era, so hearing this weirdly gives me a positive memory from a shit time.

I still don’t really find his music funny, even when it feels like it’s trying to be. Despite ... read more

Genesis Owusu - REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE
85

This is excellent. Angry, intense, sonically huge, and written with emphasis. There's punk, funk, hip hop and all sorts of chaos on this and somehow it feel focused instead of messy. The whole thing sounds like someone watching the world burn and refusing to shut up about it, which is exactly why it hits so hard.

The rage is easily the best part of the album. It feels real. not performative, not fake-deep, just properly fed up. but that’s also where my one issue comes in. At times, ... read more

LUCKI - Dr*gs R Bad
57

maybe i’m being a bit harsh with this score, but i just can’t really get around LUCKI’s voice. It’s so laid-back that half the time it barely feels like he’s trying, and after a while that starts to drag everything down for me.

26 songs in 58 minutes is also just messy. like yeah maybe that’s the style, but it makes the whole thing feel more like a dump of ideas than an actual album. There are a few decent tracks here for sure, but way too much of it just ... read more

Drake - ICEMAN
56

Out of the three new Drake albums, this is definitely the best one for me. It’s got the best lyrics, the best production, and probably the best overall sound too..

but that doesn’t mean it’s actually great. it’s still way too slow and tedious for its own good. there are stretches where it sounds good, even really good, but drake just keeps sucking the life out of it by dragging everything on and on. You keep waiting for it to really come alive and it mostly ... read more

Drake - MAID OF HONOUR
29

I honestly don’t think this is as bad as HABIBTI, but it’s still awful.

This one at least has Road Trips, which is decent, and Princess, which i mainly like because it sounds like a bad kanye song and unfortunately that is still enough for me lmao. but outside of that, this is just more smug, lifeless drake bullshit with no real spark to it.

It’s meant to be the more fun, lighter one out of the three, but it barely even manages that. Most of it just feels dumb, empty, and ... read more

"Solid review and I’m pretty much with you on the main point. Only thing I’d push back on is the “right wing dipshits” bit. I get what you’re getting at re: culture war pile-ons, but painting everyone with that brush loses some people who might otherwise agree with the actual critique. Call out the bad faith outrage merchants for sure, I just reckon the label is doing extra work here when it doesn't need to - it's nothing to do with the music - so keep it out."
