This is one of the members of Lifeguard, a Chicago trio that had a notable debut earlier in 2025. I would have never guessed this though as Kai Slater taps into the early Robert Pollard sound ala Bee Thousand and doesn't let up. Obvious love of Byrds, Zombies, Big Star, but enough contemporary flourishes and effects that it sounds genuine, not "copy cat." Was not expecting one of my favorite albums of 2025 to come out after 11/15!

My pick of the week for Oct 24 2025. I can already tell this is a record that has enough to reward immediately, but will also be a "grower" and has the wheels to stand the test of time.

Folk is not usually my genre of choice, but records like this can quickly earn a place on my playlist! She covers the Magnetic Fields, Lucinda Williams, Rufus Wainwright, Wilco, Blake Mills, CCR, and Nico, to magnificent effect, breathing new life into classics and lesser-known gems.

Solid punk/post-punk tuff that immediately reminds me of that 80's sound made great by The Replacements and early Soul Asylum.

Me First and The Gimme Gimmes - ¡Blow it…at Madison's Quinceañera!

10 years since we've heard from Me First and the Gimme Gimmes? That's crazy! They are clearly having fun here, a live record doing covers of some pop favs and mariachi classics at a 13 y.o.'s birthday party. Juice Newton, Olivia Rodrigo, ABBA, Freddie Fender, and Julio Iglesias, all with a fun
live "karaoke/craze wedding" feel. Won't win new fans but good to have them back

About

I do a radio show on a Midwestern college radio station Sunday mornings 9am til noon (Central). and AOTY is a major resource. "Looking for Lewis and Clark" on wlcafm.com Some time in 2026, I'll pass the 1,400 shows mark, so I've been rockin' the Left of the Dial for awhile now.
