Somewhat underrated. I think most of the covers here are actually really good, although I don’t think any of them surpass the original songs in quality. The cover of Guilty Of Being White is pretty fucking suspect though, especially since the original has been disavowed by the band. This really just makes me wanna listen to some old school punk, but it’s a good time itself.
Favorite Song: Abolish Government / Superficial Love
Megadeth was always meant to be a groove/oshm band and you can’t change my mind. While this album isn’t as good as RIP, it feels much more natural and fitting. Dave’s vocals are actually pretty damn good, the riffs are sick, Marty Friedman is here and everything is working great together. This album is basically Ghost but better, to put in a mixer lense.
Favorite Song: Elysian Fields
Dawg this album ROCKS y’all are tripping. The mix sounds pretty terrible, but not bad enough to make the album as bad as I’ve heard it described. It’s their most ferocious album since RIB by far and the riffs are so badass. The drumming just isn’t the same, though. Really missing Lombardo on here.
Favorite Song: Serenity In Murder
I’ve never really dove deep into Grunge before, but this is still some of the most boring and predictable stuff I’ve heard in the genre. Also, who thought this was a good idea? Thrash Metal going full on Nirvana is such a strange thought, but I guess it paid off. I hate the existence of this album, but the music really ain’t that bad. If you ignore that this is the same band that made Among The Living, it’s probably much better.
Favorite Song: Only
Megadeth are one of the big thrash bands who landed the switch to groove metal very smoothly. This album sounds like what they were always meant to be. That doesn’t mean it’s the best they’ve sounded by any means, but it sounds the most natural. Some songs on this album are pretty bad though. Seriously, who let them release Sweating Bullets. Also Dave’s vocals are seriously awful here. I can’t tell if he’s joking around or just actually getting that much ... read more
Slayer is slowly starting to lose me with these slower, atmospheric albums. It’s not like they’re bad at it, but I don’t listen to Slayer for atmosphere, I listen to Slayer for insane speed and crazy riffs. That being said, this album is still pretty good. Dave is consistently the member with most hell yeah factor, right above Jeff. There are a few really good riffs through this album and Tom’s vocals fit really well at all times.
Favorite Song: Dead Skin Mask
Dear lord this is MILES ahead of all of their previous albums. Everybody (except for Dave on vocals) is firing on all cylinders here. Marty’s solos are INCREDIBLE on every song and the riffs are so insanely groovy and awesome. Also, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think it could be longer. Some songs like Take No Prisoners feel like they deserve more time to be fleshed out. Kinda crazy to say that after listening to Persistence Of Time, because my main issue was the ... read more
Dear lord this album does not need to be this long. There are very rare exceptions (basically every 80s Metallica album) where Thrash Metal needs to surpass the 4 minute mark per song. The fact that the shortest song here is a completely unnecessary cover is honestly ridiculous. Other than that, this album is pretty damn good. The riffs are heavy as balls and the way this album is mixed with a heavy low end really gives it a strong kick that makes it feel catastrophic. Most of the songs are ... read more
Why does this even exist? Two of the worst songs from their last album, an absolutely horrible cover, and two decent covers. I don’t understand why they even released this. It’s not bad but it’s pointless.
Favorite Song: Sects
Joey’s vocals are starting to get grating to me. Sometimes listening to this album I can’t help but think it would be better with Tom Araya on vocals, but Joey is still a great singer. This album is mostly the same old stuff the last few albums were, just not as interesting, in my opinion.
Favorite Song: Be All, End All
I’ve loved the intro song on this album for years now, but never checked out the rest of it. I’m kind of disappointed to see that the slowness of it is more consistent throughout the whole album, rather than just for the atmospheric intro. That being said, it’s still slayer and it goes hard.
Favorite Song: South Of Heaven
I almost never hear anyone talk about this album because the two albums on both sides of this one are the main ones people actually care about. However, I think this is actually better than the absolute snooze fest of the last album. Some pretty good grooves here especially. Not great, but a decent thrash album.
Favorite Song: Set The World Afire
Some pretty fun punky covers. Not much to say.
Favorite Song: The Wait
BANGER album. The riffs are so heavy and groovy on this album, they almost sound like Pantera. If this album had Slayer style vocals, it might’ve been the heaviest album ever made up until then. However, Joey’s singing vocals are what bring it down slightly for me. I’m not sure if it’s actually the way he sings, or if it’s the mixing, but it gets a little grating after a while, and this album is almost an hour long so I definitely started feeling it. It’s not ... read more
While Master Of Puppets may be the most legendary metal album ever, this is the one you go to for that pure fucking thrash sound. No song overstays its welcome, no song underperforms. It’s pure perfection in less than half an hour. Less is more, and in this case, WAY more.
Favorite Song: Angel Of Death
Holy overrated. I can’t fathom where this album gets all of its praise from. Some of the songs are pretty good but the most popular songs from it are boring, poorly put together slop. Dave’s vocals are more grating and the riffs kinda suck. I know Dave has the capacity to be an amazing songwriter, but you wouldn’t be able to convince me with this album.
Favorite Song: Devil’s Island
Anthrax finally hopping on the real thrash metal wave with this album, and it slaps. Joey’s vocals are really impressive and the riffs are insane. It’s true thrash fun in every way.
Favorite Song: The Enemy
HELL YEAH BROTHER FUCKIN SLAYERRRRRR!!! This is the first time we get to hear Slayer really sound like themselves, and what a fucking way to introduce your signature sound. Every single riff on this album sounds perfectly crafted to melt a white, conservative, Christian mother in 1985’s fucking face off of her skull. Some people say the production sounds bad, I say it sounds evil and hellish. Like the instruments are being played by the most rad band of demons in Hell. FUCK THIS ALBUM IS ... read more
