Really surprised and impressed by this Jack White album. The riff ideas feel fresh and this album isn't afraid to bend the norms a bit. Each song brings it's own element to the table making the album pretty solid all the way across it. Strangely, a few songs near the top of the record seem a bit lower fidelity than the rest. (Probably intentional, but threw me off a little). Good on Jack for pushing his solo career forward.
Bad Company kicks this record off with some really solid rockers. Things slow a little bit by the end of side 1. Side 2 gives us the title track, Bad Company, which is such a classic, but the rest of side 2 feels less than stellar. I was surprised by the fact that I wasn't totally in love with this album. I think having such a strong single off the album made me think the whole album was just as good. Sadly, the deep cuts on this album are slower and have way less power behind them.
While this King Gizzard album is fun and keeps the energy going the entire time, it does hit on several blues rock cliches throughout that make fall a bit flat of where it could go. Don't get me wrong, the musicianship and production is solid, but it craves a bit more uniqueness to make it stand out from what other albums in the past have already done extremely well.
Smashing Pumpkins steps away from the over-production of the previous lengthy project to give us something a bit more raw. The album jumps from songs based around heavy syncopated riffs to more melancholy songs that feature some light instrumental. This gives me, as a listener, a sense of whiplash. I would have loved to see this album focus more on the heavy songs and less fluff, or at least split it between the first and second half. Either way, this album is leagues above the previous work.
The amount of styles Benson Boone covers on this record is impressive. The powerful vocals along with the wide range of instrumentation makes this a fun and unique album. I didn't necessarily add any of these tracks to my playlists or library, but I didn't hate the listen-through.
