Pinned Review

Pharoahe Monch - Internal Affairs
100

This is my favorite album of all time. I was 10 years old, snooping around and looking at a wish-list my older brother had for Christmas/Birthday gift ideas. A lot of car parts, and cleaning supplies since he had recently moved out. But something stood out, and that was a vinyl for this album--a $200 vinyl for this album. "$200 dollars for an album?" thought 10 year old me. "A $200 dollar album must be amazing!" So as any curious child, that likes music would: I looked it ... read more

Burial - Untrue
100

Few pieces of media can so easily lull the listener into forty winks while still being chock-full of inimitable ideas and nonstop left-field progression. Even fewer pieces of media can jive with energetic swinging drums or club-bound reese bass wubs and still leave any auditor feeling isolated and melancholic.

There are many aspects to yak about what makes this album so unique and layered. Whether that be the use of R&B vocals pitched in all sorts of different tones--to Metal Gear Solid ... read more

lil $crotum - LIFE IN BONDAGE

LIFE IN BONDAGE is Swedish rapper, lil $crotum's 30th full-length release.

Since nearly all previous works from $crotum are light and jocular, this project in particular presents a much more focused and refined sound. All tracks are replete with samples, complemented by an opaque mix in the best way possible--it's a staple of the genre. Only one track managed to fall short for me: "I Thought U Knew," as it's sonically unpleasant and tonally a mess.

I greatly admire ... read more

JPEGMAFIA - EXPERIMENTAL RAP

Disappointing and hackneyed.

For an album titled EXPERIMENTAL RAP, you would expect to hear at least one new idea or "EXPERIMENT," right? Songs like "babygirl" and "$ (Money)" have passable openings, then morph into incredibly bland rap-rock attempts. Tracks like "Meet the Dealers," "head," and "Degenerates Prayer," among others, spotlight some of the lamest and most cliched riddim/briddim instrumentals I have ever heard. There are ... read more

Sally Daley - My God & My All
85

Sally Daley was an American church composer, born on October 24, 1941. She has released a total of 15 cassettes, and worked as a church musician in many different chapels in the Chicago hinterland; she served as the musical director at St. Mary Goretti Church in Schiller Park, Illinois from 2007 up until her passing in April 10, 2020 at the age of 78.

For a project so obviously intended as a vessel for Christian faith, "My God and My All" is quite the universally accessible listen. ... read more

Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius
80

Seminal debut from fretless-electric-bass paragon Jaco Pastorius. While completely acceptable as a jazz fusion record, it is an absolute zenith in bass playing--a gapless experience. The session musicians playing with Pastorius are extremely talented, yet they still manage to be wholly dwarfed by his machine-gun fingers and endlessly brimming creativity.
