New millennium, new Radiohead album, except I actually like it?
I still struggle to get into OK Computer & In Rainbows, but this and a couple other songs from Hail to the Thief have been legitimately pretty enjoyable! It didn't change my life like it seems to do for many people, but I really enjoyed this, and in particular the moments where the band would let themselves experiment.
Not sure why this website is lowballing this so hard. This is a near-flawless digestible bundle of incredible indie folk. Sure it doesn't really push any boundaries, but this is one of the nicest albums I've heard in a long time. Most promising debut so far this year.
Brian Eno is the coolest man of all time until you look at his hair
Really wished I enjoyed this more. Loved Chocolate Matter and some other great moments here but I just found it to meander too much to retain my interest in a genre that I'm already fairly disinterested in.
Turn on the Bright Lights is completely unique in its atmospheric qualities. From my experience, there has been no other album that is able to maintain an aura of mystique and coldness that this includes for its entire runtime. The production here I think is the big key, the icy instrumentals interplay with the monotone lyricism so well. It's hard to find words to describe the balance this hits. It feel overwhelming yet keeps its distance. It feels like walking through a windy snowy icy tundra. ... read more
Insanely good collection of some of my favorite indie songs. Even though all of the songs are basically the same, they seldom get old and are all very enjoyable removed from the album.
Was not prepared for how much more I would enjoy the second side of this
First listen is still the best, definitely loses some of its grandeur after a few spins, but Friko certified themselves in one fell swoop as one of the best indie bands out of Chicago in recent years.
Will never understand the appeal of Animal Collective's... mess compared to their contemporaries.
When you go in with impossibly low expectations, it's hard to match them. They got matched.
Listening to this, you wouldn't have any inkling that these guys were ever even half-decent, let alone one of the best prog bands. That being said, it's hardly the same band anymore. There's not a whole lot to cling onto that reminds of good musicianship.
First three tracks aren't THAT bad, to be honest, Congo gets close though. I got real sick of Phil Collins' voice so it's pretty at first refreshing ... read more
I'm gonna try to mention every song on here at least once because I felt like it and I have free will.
I'll embrace the prog snobbiness of this review but this album exudes shameless uninteresting poppy tunes and a thinly veiled disinterest for making anything actually adventurous or unique. Even the fun hooks of No Son of Mine and Jesus He Knows Me leading off the record are hardly memorable even just a couple songs later on the tracklist.
I Can't Dance is right up there with Who Dunnit? in ... read more
All things considered, this album isn't bad or hard to listen to, it just provides zero substance. None of the tracks serve a purpose outside of being pretty decent prog tracks individually. There are flashes of great potential (or what was once great potential) that show up surprisingly often, they just happen to be isolated moments that don't build to anything. Absolutely sick album cover though, which I figured was worth the mention.
Lot of good songs—even great at times—but ... read more
Not particularly close to the level of quality present on the masterful 'Man It Feels Like Space Again,' but this is yet another great showing from a band that doesn't blow my mind compared to their neo-psychedelic contemporaries, but certainly seems like they can do no wrong. Daisy ranks among the best Pond songs.
The first half of this is among some of the best recorded music of all time, each of the heavy hitters through Casimir Pulaski Day could all make a run at being my favorite on any normal album. Good thing this isn't any normal album. Sufjan expertly weaves intricate and symphonic instrumentals with a wide array of unique ideas. The songwriting here is among the best I've ever heard, but I was not expecting how proficient everything else is here. The production is incredible and there's really ... read more
This has some great stuff but would really benefit from being considerably shorter.
Friend of a Friend is great but I just cannot seem to get into anything that has Thom Yorke's name on it
