Beyoncé - COWBOY CARTER
97

Sprawling, authentic, & inspired. Lots to listen to, explore, & enjoy. There's something here for everyone.

Brandy - The Best of Brandy
95

The track list featured here is wrong and incomplete. There should be 18 tracks beginning with "Baby" and ending with "Sittin' Up In My Room". That's the version I'm rating. The compilation covers all of Brandy's essential singles from 1994-2003 across her four biggest hit albums. Some filler tracks were added, but the 13 key tracks are all there. If you only own one Brandy album, let it be this one.

Madonna - MDNA
70

A trend-chasing noisefest with a few listenable songs scattered amidst the dusty, drug-punned haze. Skip ahead to Rebel Heart for an artist with something to say.

Madonna - Madame X
80

Quite the disjointed album. Half of the tracks seem made for an international audience while the other half seems more mindful of the US music market. An experimental effort either way. Dark Ballet, God Control, Crave, Crazy, Come Alive, I Don't Search I Find, Ciao Bella, & Back That Up To The Beat could've been their own album, for the better.

Madonna - Like a Prayer
NR

Four best songs on the album: Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Keep It Together, and Cherish. The rest remain stuck in the 1980s.

Madonna - Like a Virgin
NR

Four songs are worth listening to: Like A Virgin, Material Girl, Dress You Up, and Love Don't Live Here Anymore. Forget the rest.

Madonna - Madonna
89

The five main singles shine the brightest while the remaining tracks are dated and forgettable. Those looking for more a consistent album will have to start with her 1990s output.

Madonna - True Blue
NR

The four main hit singles are the real draw here. Everything else is utterly forgettable and hasn't aged nearly as well. Madonna wouldn't start making cohesive albums until 1990.

Aaliyah - Aaliyah
NR

A flawless, inspired, trendsetting album that defined Contemporary R&B / Electro R&B moving forward. Aaliyah's best album by far. Shame it was her last. Still sounds fresh today.
