This is like a case study to prove the negative impact Brat Summer has had on our greater society. Some people think they can also do that EDM thing and be just like Charli XCX, and Lucy Lamb REALLY wants to be Charli XCX. She’s this close to figuring out what Hyperpop is too and that makes it even more painful
COME CLOSER is the debut of TOMORA, a supergroup between Indie-Pop’s AURORA and Tom Rowlands of Electronic duo The Chemical Brothers. My familiarity with both artists is very sparce. I’ve been knowing of AURORA for a bit now, I’m generally familiar with her style but I’d be lying if I said I ever actually listened to her. And I’ve only known The Chemical Brothers as a name, much less their sound. So yeah, I really didn’t have any real expectations for what ... read more
One of my favourite things about seeing groups go solo is seeing the freaky shit the members go off and do now that they’re free to do what they want. The Beatles, 1D, BTS, you see it happen with all the big names, and LOONA has been no different. In particular Yves has been the one I’m most intrigued by, given she’s pretty solidly the breakout star of the group, and the one most actively releasing music, with this EP of hers, NAIL, being her most recent release.
And for this ... read more
Hades is Melanie Martinez’ latest album. Melanie is an artist I’ve been admittedly very averse to. Even before I was familiar with her music and the stigma around it, I was already vaguely aware of status as a controversial figure, and that mixed with my knowledge or her deranged, to put it lightly, fandom just turned me off of her for a while. But I saw this was an upcoming release, so I decided to finally bite the bullet and give her a shot.
This is such a /weird/ album. Not in ... read more
You can’t cry to Frank Ocean and IGOR and then be transphobic, that’s not how this works.
If Brat is the party girl, intoxicated out of her mind and throwing up in the bathroom, Wor$t Girl In America is the woman in her late 20s, with a crippling addiction problem and an exponentially growing quarter-life crisis, on the verge of blacking out right outside the bar.
I feel pretty late to the party on WGIA, which is kind of my fault. I’ve been hearing since last year about how good the singles are and how great WGIA will be. Yet, I didn’t listen to anything from it all ... read more
The character archetype that Charlie Puth falls in is one with a long history that has stood the test of time. The genius/talented musician, who also happens to be deeply unlikeable. Most folk he rubs cheeks with here take a more direct route, making critically, sometimes even commercially, beloved projects, while at the same time being an abhorrent prick/asshole behind the scenes. But ever the pioneer, Puth goes his own way. He knows he doesn’t have to prove his abilities to anyone, ... read more
Last year, partially by his request, I checked out Lucan’s debut album The High Life. I thought it was an enjoyable enough project, but nothing super extraordinary or unique about it to make me want to return. Now, just a little over a month ago, he dropped his follow-up, Spring Cleaning, so why not check it out.
My general critiques to The High Life mostly boiled down to saying that, while its made up of generally decent pieces, it’s length and general rigidity in its sound just ... read more
Kanye finally dropped Bully, yeah this is gonna be a fun one. The fact that there’s been basically no fanfare about this album dropping, outside of dedicated music and hip-hop spaces, from the man who at one point could record a whole album of him taking shit and still receive critical and commercial acclaim, with innumerable Grammies, and who has been a constant in general discussions for better or worse, especially in the last 5 years, says way more about this album’s quality than ... read more
I have nowhere else to put this but this album reminds me of hit NBA player Tim Duncan for some reason.
James Blake is in that caliber of artist for me where, I can absolutely acknowledge how cool and interesting he is, but I’ve never loved or connected to the music I’ve heard as much as I would love to. Last time I checked him out was with his last album, his collab with Lil Yachty, Bad Cameo, a pretty odd move for both artists, mixing Blake’s Alt RnB and Yachty’s ... read more
In my experience as a music fan, it’s often the music you expect the least to be the ones that blow you the hardest. Case in point, Forbidden, the latest album from legendary Japanese pop artist Sheena Ringo. Technically this is a compilation album, it’s a sequel to 2013’s Ukina, and like that, it’s mainly focused on Sheena working with collaborators.
From what I know about her, again, Sheena’s a pretty legendary pop artist in Japan, with a lot of her early work ... read more
It’s been pretty solidly over 10 years since Fetty Wap’s prime in like 2015 which… oh god… am I that old??? Uhh anyways yeah that horrifying reminder of the passage of time aside, despite that, it weirdly feels like he hasn’t passed his peak relevancy yet. That’s mostly kinda thanks to this very recent resurgence that’s been springing up over these last 2 years, of people remembering and falling back in love with Fetty. It’s not only something ... read more
This is like the coolest hit song ever to me. The thought that JJK and Dispatch edits could allow a random single from 2018 by a band without any sort of traction or major backing to not only be popular but chart in the billboard hot 100 is so wild. And the fact that we live in a world where that’s happened, I am just in awe of.
Strictly 4 The Scythe, the debut of Denzel Curry led hip-hop collective The Scythe. Collectives have been a staple feature of hip-hop since its formation. From NWA to D12 to Odd Future to A$ap Mob, over the genre’s vast history there have been many major groups to choose your pickings from. Though, past the turn of the decade, there’s been a very noticeable lack of any major collectives, with most having gone inactive or broken up. This really became a point of conversation last ... read more
The question of how art should tackle serious worldwide tragedies is deceptively hard to answer. Through rage, sympathy or satire, there’s so many ways you can go about it. Help(2) is a charity compilation album, organized by the War Child Foundation, which strives to do that while raising funds for children living through war and features a number of major artists in the indie and alt music scenes. From the likes of Black Country New Road, Sampha, Cameron Winter and Fontaines D.C., to ... read more
Robyn has always been synonymous with the idea of the beloved but underrated popstar. While that hasn’t necessarily changed, there’s been a very noticeable shift from the turn of the century, as her 2010 song “Dancing On My Own” became pretty unanimously praised as one of the greatest songs of the current century, where she’s gone from that, to one of the great Queer Pop Icons, as more people have come to a realization of how good she and her influence. And ... read more
As an artist, Harry Styles doesn’t exactly try hiding his influences, and if he is, he’s doing a terrible job at it. Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, or Kattdo as I’ll be calling because I’m not a masochist, is Harry’s latest album after a pretty lengthy hiatus. The four years since Harry’s House have been turbulent, in that time As It Was became a mega hit and turned Harry into a megastar, he starred in a movie, he appeared in the MCU and was promptly ... read more
U is underscores’ third studio release. I’ve known of underscores and her stuff for a while now, as a part of the whole Queer Electronica scene, but i never really had the desire to check her out, at least not till last year’s Danny Brown album. I really loved her contributions on Stardust, especially “Copycats” which is still one of my favorites songs from last year, so with that and then this album’s impending release, I had no more excuses to not finally ... read more
I’ll keep this one short and simple. Bloodluxe is the recent “deluxe” to, underground superstar, slayr’s 2025 breakout album Half Blood. I put deluxe in quotations because it’s officially and technically a deluxe, but effectively it’s a whole new thing because it literally doubles the length of the og album. But I get why it is one, because it is a lot of the same stuff that was being done of the base, but I don’t mean that in a bad way. I loved that ... read more
After a period of very extended anticipation, Yeat finally dropped long anticipated and incredibly hyped 6th studio album and 4th entry in his Lyfe series ADL. To which, the crowd goes mild.
Coming off of great drops like 2024’s 2093 and 2025’s A Dangerous Summer, which feature some of Yeat’s highest highs and best showings of creativity yet, ADL is really disappointing. I could point out how exhaustingly long the album is, or how overstuffed the tracklist or how the album ... read more
