AC have an uncanny ability to take expensive synth sounds and turn them into kitschy circus or carousel music. That being said, the final minutes of this almost achieve something interesting and ethereal, mysterious, cathartic, etc. resembling certain early tracks like I See You Pan or even Hey Light. Unfortunately you have to slog through 18 minutes of the aforementioned carousel melodies and tribute to modern top 40 that precedes it to get there.
Plays like an amalgam of every 90s alt rock bands. By turns you can hear the influence of Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Radiohead, Live, Pixies, etc. But Wozniak's vocals are terrific, and the record is unbelievably listenable.
Extremely listenable baroque chamber pop punk with one of the best drum sounds ive ever heard.
Paul Simon returns with a late-career masterwork. Some of this recalls the best songwriting on Rhythm of the Saints but way more sedate, contemplative, and introspective. Comparisons to Bowie’s final album are apt thematically if not musically. You wish McCartney or Dylan or any other artist from Simon’s graduating class could be this confrontational about their impending mortality or their struggles with faith. Best of the year so far.
If this album only contained Pretty People, Breaker, Murderer, and Violent Past, it would still be a 10/10.
Been re-listening to a ton of live bootlegs by ASMZ and came across this EP, which I could only find a copy of on YouTube. Super solid and can’t believe it took me so long to listen.
Some of these tracks would be truly excellent if it weren’t for Plant’s godawful faux blues crooning. I can’t think of a single lead singer from the 70s that wouldn’t be better suited for LZ than Plant.
A lot of memories and feelings wrapped up in this rating. Probably MWY's most accessible record and the best (tied with Pale Horses?) at blending Aaron Weiss's screamo/talk music tendencies with the gentle lilt of his folk singer's voice that had only become apparent on the previous record's final track. The record and band's greatest strength is contained within their greatest weakness, that being Weiss's reliance on Christian themes, references, and allusions. This creates a plethora of ... read more
Kind of boring on a first listen. Oddly lacks the energy of their studio work. The female vocals are a little too generic for me. Turbines/Pigs is a snore until the last 90 seconds. Just couldn't get into it. Might give it another shot in a year.
