I wasn't sure about it for the first minute, but it immediately clicked after that. It might be the best song they've ever made; it certainly is the most interesting.
Such an interesting record, it single-handedly made me want to review albums on this site again. Just a ferocious typhoon of genre blending and ridiculous energy. Infectious hooks buried beneath some impressive mathy stuff and sharp lyricism. They've made a fan out of me.
Now for the scoring. Here's how I do it:
I score each song out of 100. I then take the average and get a final score from that. Below is my scoring criteria.
I am not including the weird atmosphere tracks. ... read more
After reviewing their self-titled album, I genuinely wasn't sure what to expect from their second effort. Despite considering myself a Slipknot fan for much of my teenage years, I didn't have a lot of history with "Iowa." Given the fact that this record seems to be often considered their best work by a large chunk of the fanbase, maybe that's a bit of blasphemy. It's not that I wasn't familiar with the songs here, more just that I didn't come back to them or the album at large as much ... read more
For my second set of reviews on AOTY, I've decided to take a dive into the discography of one of my favorite bands as a teenager, Slipknot. Quite honestly, Slipknot helped 12-13 year old me diversify my music tastes. Before hearing "Wait and Bleed" and immediately falling in love with their music, most of what I listened to consisted of shitty pop punk and some classic rock cuts passed down to me from my father. Hearing the guttural anger of Slipknot awoke something in me and got me ... read more
After taking a nostalgic trip through Visions and Art Angels, I figured it was only fair that I checked out Miss Anthropocene next. In stark contrast to the last two albums, this was one that I had never listened to in its entirety. I had heard a few songs off of it and thought they were relatively good, but I never dove deep into this record. That all changed with this review. So what did I think? Was it as good as the other two albums?
Yes and no.
While I still thought this album was very ... read more
After going back through Visions, I naturally found myself wanting to go back through the follow-up, Art Angels. While I have more nostalgia for Visions simply because I probably listened to that album more, I do remember thinking Art Angels was even better. And that's saying a lot. That said, it has been a long while since I've listened to the entire project front to back. So, did it hold up to my memory of it?
It ABSOLUTELY did. I might even say it exceeded my expectations of how good it was ... read more
For my first review on this site, I wanted to go with an album I know quite well. This was my introduction to not only Grimes but the synth-pop genre as a whole back in the day. For this review, I went back and listened to every single track multiple times. It was quite fun revisiting an album that meant a lot to me as a teenager. So, how did it hold up?
In short, VERY well. I've heard a lot of rumblings about this album not aging well, but I honestly could not disagree more. Grimes brings her ... read more
