YUNGBLUD - Idols
67

Had some alright ideas here and there at the beginning. But as the album went on, everything started sounding very similar. It's a pretty ambitious project, which is maybe what lead Yungblud to rely a little too much on the genre. He still has a ways to go to make this type of music his own. Still a huge improvement from the last album he released.

I can't believe he could not eke out even a single second of enjoyment out of me this whole album. For someone who seems to pride himself for his intimate writing and lyricism (and if you don't believe he does based on this album, just read his spotify bio), he sure does make some of the most sterile, commercial, and mind numbingly dull music imaginable. This project just feels like it was made in a lab after studying internet music trends and skipped the part where the soul was ... read more

Swans - Greed

Maybe in the future I'll get it more but I have struggled to get through this album a few times now. I see some of the building blocks for the few swans tracks I have heard before from their later stuff, which is one of the few redeeming qualities. But I cant help but wonder how much lower this score would be if it wasn't swans. It almost makes "Filth" look like a fluke for this era of Swans, cause seriously this and "Cop" were just dumbed down, boring versions of ... read more

Self Esteem - A Complicated Woman

This album is good at having a whole lot of theatrics but at the end of the day, lacks personality. It's just kind of a blank slate of an album. The genres switch fairly often but when they do its still very boring and uninspired song writing, just in different genres. It just feels like fundamentally this album was written with commercial success as the number one priority. But then a few swears were thrown here and there and the singer might talk about sex sometimes, to make the album ... read more

The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico

Experimental albums are kind of hard to review, I feel like experimentalism makes music an even more subjective thing than it already is. But I'll say that parts of the album were surprisingly conventional. Like they sounded how I expected a rock group from the 60's to sound. I feel like the experimentation becomes much more apparent during and after "Heroin" and for me that's is when the album started picking up in quality. However I think I respect this album as a ... read more

Erika de Casier - Lifetime

It's nice but kind of dull at times. I actually found some of the melodies kind of awkward and not super smooth or memorable or anything. As far as the atmosphere of the album goes, it doesn't go too far past, what I feel like, are fairly obvious choices for its sound font. Same can be said for the singer. She delivers and sings everything exactly how you'd expect and it's a bit boring. It's nice, basic, background music but that is about it.

Dierks Bentley - Broken Branches

Generic, corny, over produced, Disney sounding ass country. Also the first song is literally about cold beer which made me laugh cause damn can you be anymore stereotypical

Lil Tecca - DOPAMINE

Nothing all that special and even a little bloated, some of these tracks felt too same-y especially in the latter half. That being said is still a fairly enjoyable and consistent project.

Various Artists - Smurfs Movie Soundtrack (Music From & Inspired By)
39

As generic as you'd expect an album like this to be. No cohesion or atmosphere or anything that makes up a soundtrack I'd personally like. Just a collection of commercial pop music, with some slight deviations here and there. Some tracks were also surprisingly bare bones. There is a surprising amount of Indian/south asian (?) influence in the production and lyrics. I don't know if this means that the movie will take place in India or something Idk it was just kind of surprising ... read more

Jane Remover - Revengeseekerz

As fun and cool sounding as this is I feel like a lot of these songs re hash the same ideas and over all the creative decisions are more surface level. There are cool textured sounds but for the most part they don't really change much track to track, making the album kinda blend into itself. There isn't really that many fun drum patterns or melodies or interesting structures (except for certain sections in some tracks) it's just cool sounds and hype. Which is fine, it just to me ... read more

This album can sound from some of the heaviest stuff you can listen to, to some of the most beautiful in it's genre. Biggest flaw is that it's not the most diverse album. But that cohesion also helps the atmosphere of the project as a whole which I imagine was a goal for them. If so, they succeeded.

Lil Wayne - Tha Carter VI
45

So many of these songs were so incredibly repetitive and longer than they needed to be. Lil Wayne's voice gets boring after a while as well with this project being over an hour long. There were also laughably bad songs on here, but as many negatives as I can throw to this album it genuinely entertained me. He clearly goes out of his way to branch out and try a bunch of different stuff for the project and it barely ever works. But it did end up making the album a lot less boring than it ... read more

Billy Idol - Dream Into It

The first and last track are ok, the rest of the album was some of the most dull sounding rock I have heard in a while.

Chime Oblivion - Chime Oblivion

Great sound and vocalist. I wish they would embrace the chaos a bit more and go for a more erratic noisy sound. I think that would fit this band and their energy the best.

Swans - Cop
59

I feel like this is just took the worst parts of filth and focused on them. It wasn't as fun as filth and it didn't make me feel as much either.

Swans - Filth
86

This album can be repetitive and a lot of these songs don't develop very much at all past the first like half, making a lot of these tracks feel longer than they needed to be. At least that's what you'd expect but as I kept listening I quickly appreciated this repetitiveness which makes each track feel like their own mental breakdown. The repetitive and catchy riffs and lyrics felt like whatever the opposite of a mantra would be. A repetition of thoughts and ideas to almost get ... read more

LSD and the Search for God - LSD and the Search for God

I think it has a pretty cool sound but the song writing is a bit dull. The structures of these songs are pretty boring and repetitive without really adding anything as the song goes on. The production might be tough for some people to listen to but as noisy as it was I actually found the drums to be mixed in a way that kind of cuts through all of it serving as a nice foundation to the whole album.

Shura - I Got Too Sad For My Friends
70

As plain and vanilla as it might sound, it still a pleasant listen with relatively rich layering and production.

Ayox - WHEN NOBODY IS WATCHING
48

I don't know too much about this kind of music but it felt generic. It was just kind of boring, nothing about it stood out very much.

My Chemical Romance - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge
91

So consistently great with an energy that stays up the entire album. There were parts that were written in creative ways i wasnt expecting, you'd think with this being a pop punk album there would be more obvious song structures. But even though none of the songs stray too far from their genre, these structures and creative writing decisions set this project apart. Also Gerard Way is an amazing vocalist, his voice carries so much emotion. I love it.
