Sweet sounding, but not really my thing. The music feels too empty at points and the lyrics can sometimes verge into territory that bugs me. Definitely a fun and cheerful album, but nothing too crazy in my opinion.
It's alright, just a little plain at times. The first song has a very beautiful atmosphere and the remaining songs are just a little uninteresting; which generally makes for a mediocre record.
Enjoyable American Primitivism, very free flowing sounding and the sonic palette as well as the melodies explored are very nice. It's just limited conceptually because of how low it's ambitions are, but for what it is, it's very enjoyable.
Completely rips and knows to keep things short. Everything about this production wise just makes this record as good as it is, the pure dirt in every inch of this album's writing and recording gives it such a nasty feel that makes this a really fun listen. The riffs and vocals are also solid, but the general atmosphere and sound is what blew me away here.
I'm not fully sure why this is as loved as it is. I enjoyed it, but it doesn't really feel like the third best ambient album ever; a lot of the work on here is extremely repetitive and while the textural work is good and oftentimes great, it just doesn't feel like one of the greatest pieces of ambient I've heard. Like I said, this is still a very good album especially with Disk 1 and select (no pun intended) moments from Disk 2 that remain largely in the realm of Ambient ... read more
Just as good as Animals, just for different reasons. This really excels on the atmosphere and structural side of things; I couldn't point out specific riff that blew me away but this album is a lot more focused on the contrast between the extreme highs and lows in dynamics rather than complex riffing.
It's at a very interesting place in Math Rock/Pop where it gets just on the cusp of being entirely too much. The guitars and drums are constantly firing on all cilinders during this album but there's just enough respite in the clean vocals and quieter moments that it's not completely overwhelming. Now, to be fair, a lot of Math stuff works best when it's difficult to process, but this type of peppy Math Rock works great. Very fun album and deserving of praise!
My first real exposure to Slushwave, and I find it very interesting. By design it's extremely hazy, which I actually like a lot, but especially on the Telepath side it can slip into being forgettable. As with a lot of ambient, things definitely get really muddy in terms of sticking power and I think this album struggles with that; the only things that I can retain from these two hours is a lot of very beautiful and lush soundscapes with interesting textures and samples in the first half. I ... read more
Probably one of the most lush and beautiful Neoclassical New Age albums I've heard, but ultimately it really does insist on itself. It feels really redundant with none of the songs ever going anywhere beyond meandering between different sections; you could listen to one of the longer songs and basically get a fair enough idea of what everything else sounds like. With that being, this album is still very beautiful and has amazing musicianship across it's short time. It's worth a ... read more
Definitely the weakest GY!BE record I've heard; it's mostly just fine Post-Rock stuff. None of it is particularly interesting but none of it is UN-interesting either, it's just a very middle of the road album, especially for a band as great as Godspeed.
Pretty boring, but decent and fun enough piano improvisations. They generally range from pretty cool jazz influenced jams to really short and uninteresting, as the title states, sketches.
really beautiful new age! I wish I had more to say, but it just works. The basic insturmentals are very nice and the tracklist has enough variety to not make it feel stale. It does end up dragging a lot, this album really doesn't need to be almost 90 minutes, but there's also a lot of merit in the longer and more drawn out songs/sections. It's pretty much what one would think of when talking about tribal ambient / new age, so I can definitely credit it for being a good execution ... read more
Very nice New Age stuff, the first track especially is really beautiful. It's absolutely the type of ambient that must be passively listened to, this album's repetition would get so boring after even just a little bit of giving it your full attention. With that being said, the repetition does give it a really nice hypnotic feeling with different melodies and textures coming in and out on top of one core progression.
It's cool, really noisy Proto-Post-Rock. It doesn't particularly excel on any fronts even though it is a nice listen; the Shoegaze, Ambient, and Post-Rock sides of this have all been done noticeably better before.
Pretty nice, and an interesting companion to the original. While I do owe Flood a relisten, this does kind of confirm my opinions on it. I think it's a little too stagnant for my taste even if it is enjoyable and an impressive suite. This album does cut out a lot of the more drone or 100% repetitive sections, but that's not always the best course of action. It does help make a more concise listening experience, but I think the atmosphere both sections 1 and 4 of the original album ... read more
Probably the most mediocre of the Convocations series, but a fine listen. I just lack anything to really add: there's not really any big shifts compared to the other EP's sounds and I ultimately was just unfocused for the duration of this release. A pretty lame way to cap off the series.
It's a really whatever release. It has a cool atmosphere and does exactly what it sets out to do; it feels unfair to call this EP unambitious when that was seemingly the entire motivation for this release. The music is in the same realm as the rest of Mac's work and thus doesn't really add anything to his discography. Nothing particularly memorable but a fine enough listen.
Not sure why people hate on this so much, this feels like the most directly ambient release in this project thus far. I feel like his textures are at their strongest here and there's some pretty interesting progressions. I feel like this would be a lot better received if it was by an ambient artists instead of Sufjan, because most of this EP just sounds like very standardly good ambient.
It feels like simultaneously an improvement and a combination of the previous two EPs. It still has a focus on texture but it brings back the waves of soft electronic chords. It's not a stellar improvement, but it's the best thus far.
Really interesting Post-Metal stuff, but definitely not as great at people sometimes hype it up to be. I really enjoyed the contrast between the more gentle bells and pianos against the harsh drones and distorted guitars, but I feel like that contrast could've been pushed even further. I feel like this album isn't great dynamically, which may be a hot take, but I just don't really feel the crescendos or movement really happening. For example, the ending of Dull Knife Pt. II feels ... read more
