Little bit of a messy rollout, but as Cheap Hotel’s #1 defender, I knew this was gonna be incredible
I need some time to get used to the abrupt outros, but I otherwise love this. Blood Orange is an expert at choosing collaborators that bring his music to another level, like here with Caroline Polachek, Mustafa, and Eva Tolkin. It reminds me of how Negro Swan was tied together super well by the spoken word portions by Janet Mock. The album has a consistent sonic through line that just brings you to London when you listen to it.
I really checked this album out at the perfect time, it'll always feel relevant
I know this album is still pretty recent, but I can't believe I'm just discovering it now. My mind was blown, It's crazy when you find that album that is literally your psyche in the form of music. I really really needed this.
It's crazy to think about she wasn't even going to make a new album. This ended up being roughly on par with Sweetener as her best work with the addition of the deluxe tracks. The new tracks have very catchy hooks and pleasant pop production, and I feel like each track called back to a previous era of hers in the best way. For example, dandelion was extremely thank u next-esque, and Hampstead reminded me a lot of her My Everything ballads. What stands out the most is definitely the ... read more
I don't remember how exactly I originally found Ethel Cain's music. But, I've always been very intrigued by both her sound and visual identity, even though her music is not something I can listen to *very* often. I usually have to be in a specific mood or state of mind. When I do listen, though, particularly Preacher's Daughter, her music always has a pretty notable impact on me afterwards.
I can't even describe how this project made me feel. I knew I was going to be ... read more
A definite improvement over GABRIEL (an album I listen to all the time), especially when it came to vocal performance. That's something I noticed right away. He also played with more interesting song structures in tracks like Id which is by far my favorite on the album. My only thing is that I wish Amen transitioned into Say lmao
I remember being in Typography class in my senior year of college one day and double take randomly came on shuffle. It was an *instant* captivation, and I ended up falling in love with the entire rapunzel ep after listening to the whole thing. Dhruv is an artist that gives a voice to those painfully introverted lonely gays wondering around in life (me!) and that was conveyed so successfully in Private Blizzard. The album is very consistent and I love the melodies especially, and the biggest ... read more
How sweet of Sabrina to dedicate a song to Overwatch's latest hero <3
A beautiful and refreshing album that's a a clear evolution from her first album, which I was pretty mixed on. Really hyped to listen to Dream Girl and Pilot a million more times.
This is just excellent, Take Yourself Home is on a *completely* different level.
I have no idea how Blood Orange flew under my radar for so long, but I think I remember seeing this album cover on social media years ago. I randomly stumbled upon this album while at work and after looking through descriptions of its themes and sound, I was really hyped to give it a listen when I got home. I definitely wasn't disappointed. I don't think I've listened to any other album that spoke to me on such a deep, personal, level. Blood Orange truly captured the feeling of ... read more
