Plenty of people are going to eat their words about this album.
Disappointed in this. It has perhaps 2 good songs not what I was hoping for after his recent projects
Incredibly sad and incredibly beautiful. It manages to be life affirming despite the undeniable sadness of the material. Sufjan found a way to access grief and death in a delicate and intimate manner without being exhibisionist. The repeated refrain "we're all going to die!" inspires first shock then introspection and finally acceptance much like the experience of someone facing death
This is the best written album of the year and the best country album released in 2017. Isbell sheds light on difficult topics from the center of the storm and leaves listeners with something substantial to contemplate afterwards. Lyrics are the most important aspect of music to me therefore - the score. I can see those who value instrumentation feeling less excited - nevertheless this is an excellent body of work worthy of contemplation.
J'Adore!
This is pop beautifully and meticulously done. The production is exciting and refreshing - never boring and frequently taking unexpected turns. Props to Jack Antonoff (ugh)! The composition of the album is excellent as well - there is no drop-off and as listeners move from the party of the first 3 tracks to the introspection of the middle and denouement there is a constant electricity that jolts the keen listener. It even feels like a Ferris wheel ride that spun faster than the ... read more
Don't listen to this sort of music at all, so I'm unsure how to evaluate it. But I really liked it!!
Utterly lacking in personality. The most distinguishable feel of this album is that Jack is now rich/famous and feels slight guilt at leaving his old life behind (but don't take the money!). It reads as a collection of songs that he would bring to other artists who will then inject their own personality - but lacking that we are just left with a blandly produced album expressing well-trodden emotions.
Good Effort but this is completely not for me. I find myself agreeing with him that 'death is not a subject for art' especially when its done in such a heavy handed manner. The lyrics for me are quite bad - which is a different take than the norm. Its admirable (to some - not to me) that he felt open enough to read out his diary about such a tragic and painful situation. But the deep sadness of what he talks about in such a dirge like musical setting does not elevate the lyrics. The simplicity ... read more
I really believe in this album and this group. I think they have touched on a wavelength that is very much inline with what people of my generation are like - the multiplication of identity, the loneliness of technology, the emptiness behind the excess, and the self-awareness and doubt behind every stumble and triumph. I generally don't like to comment on other's reviews but particularly here I can't help but to notice the dismissive attitude shown by many reviewers here. It might not give them ... read more
Updated my review score from 69 to 75. I gave this a listen again and I quite liked it.
Knocked this down from 100 to 95. Track 6, 9, and 12 are meh. And notably - this is starting to get hold the production does not hold up as strongly as time passes
For me this is an album of 'background noise'. I can envision myself putting this record on while working at home or at my job when I want something calming without anything to distract my focus. I am not sure if this is a compliment or an insult to the album. The lyrics don't really draw any attention, the vocals are quiet and monotonous at best and the production makes clever use of 'empty space' but there is no melody or rhythmic section that stands out. However, I can see how this album has ... read more
A very pleasurable listen! The lyrics really need to be allowed to settle otherwise they can seem overly simplistic. I listened and simultaneously read the lyrics and I gained a really strong appreciation for what Courtney accomplished on this album. She touches on a multitude of themes - mental health, developing an identity, climate change, internet takedown culture, depression, and more. Even more impressive to me was the instrumentals on this album which are absolutely mindblowingly ... read more
No Rating Yet but this has some of my favorite Dylan Songs - Lovesick, Not Dark Yet, Cold Iron Bonds, Make You Feel my love (honorary mention - Adele's version <3 )
The absolute perfect Dylan Album, Highway 61 Revisted, shows the Bard at one of his many poetic peaks with classic songs and sharp/surreal lyrics that paint a glorious picture.
Favorites are - It takes a lot to laugh, it takes a train to cry, Ballad of a Thin Man, Desolation Row, Just Like Tom Thomb's Blues, and of course Like a Rolling Stone.
What a listener catches on to the more they listen to Dylan is his composition of unlikely images, poignant and cutting lyrics with a humorous ... read more
not much to be excited about with this. I think songs should be able to stand on their own .. which this doesn't.
