Iron Lung is probably one of the greatest tracks King Gizzard has released. This is one of their strongest, it took me some time to warm up to it but ultimately this is really tight.
Tracks like Magma, Ice V, and Iron Lung are so damn groovy. The album starts with Mycelium, which initially seemed a bit off-kilter but I like it now. Ice V is top-tier. I prefer this record a tad more to Ants From Up There. I love the unhinged and stressful beauty present in this album, such a dense and lush atmosphere. The shorter tracklist also makes it a tighter experience. Lots of fun!...
So good! The score may increase in time - the first half of this is perfection. One of the most interesting tracks is The Race Is About To Begin, the first listen of it was bewildering and I've come around to it. The Defence reminds me a lot of Marlene Dietrich, lush and beautiful. 27Q is foreboding yet playful, with the final parts being a hint of sweet and morbid - a great closer.
Edit: Raised score to a 9/10
A good change of pace from their usual work. I love the evolution and shift of focus to a more succinct atmosphere and nuanced vocals... still filled to the brim with jams too.
The last half of this album is utterly beautiful - Give Up the Ghost is easily one of Radiohead's most beautiful tracks - but the first half is quite dull and its brilliant moments are muddled by the mix. The Basement performance does those songs justice. Had they only released that iteration of this album, this record would certainly be in the middle-to-upper echelon of Radiohead's discography.
