Pinned Review

This is my favorite album of all time. I could probably write volumes on what it means to me and the intricacies of each song. Perhaps I will one day. For now though, I just want everyone to know that this album is the pinnacle. The storytelling, the production, the VOCALS, the everything is perfect. Kelela knows exactly what she's doing. If for some reason this album hasn't dug its claws into you yet, turn all the lights off, press play, and let it move your body without you seeing it. The ... read more

Róisín at her coolest. Closer to Ruby Blue than Overpowered, Róisín Murphy's third solo album is an experiment in unusual song structure, meandering electronic production, and emotional distance. Vocally, Murphy never strays too far from casual sing-talking, seemingly stripping her potent lyrics of emotionality. She instead opts to bolster the feelings expressed through her writing with exciting and unexpected electronic production. These songs unroll themselves ... read more

I think I prefer Vol 1 to this iteration, but the bops are definitely and undeniably here. I wore "What's The Word" out all winter and will be doing the same to "Stoggaf" and "Spinning". Compared to its predecessor, the songs on here are lacking, in that Cakes' lyricism is so central that whats surround it seems to fade away. This leaves some songs ("Taste Test", "Lite Werk", and bits of "Spinning") feeling rather limp. Still, the ... read more

Nice, high energy mix from the Overmono brothers. It highlights their recent output ("So U Kno", "If U Ever", "BMW Track"), as well as their expertise in curating a set. Some of the song choices here are particularly inspired (see Powder, Anz, and 1995 epilepsy's appearances). The mix doesn't do much to reinvent the UK techno scene. Rather, it celebrates it and provides us all with an overdue dance break.I'm sure this would hit even harder in a club, or just with a ... read more

I was hesitant to check this out because what I love about Alice's music is its grandiosity and competing, yet harmonious instrumentation. Being just vocals and wurlitzer, I worried there would be little here for me to enjoy. Boy, was I wrong! This is far from Alice's usual sound, but it is just as engaging and moving. Alice sings and plays wurlitzer with palpable intention. The spirituality she expresses in these songs is contagious and makes listening to it a practice in reflection and ... read more

Another lovely collection of ambient jazz tunes from Gendel and Wilkes. Like on the original Music for Saxophone and Bass Guitar, the vibe is mellow and the focus is on making compelling, yet subdued, music. The flourishes of electronics and even dance sounds that are peppered throughout grounds these otherwise weightless songs.

Hey there! I’m making a community list for the end of the world, and I would love for you to contribute.

“The surrounding buildings, in ruins. The last survivors, scrambling to find anything that remains. Fire flickers in the pitch-black, creating just a sliver of radiance. Miraculously, you find an old device that can play music. You can only play one album as the battery is nearly dead. Knowing that you have little time left, what is the one album that you choose to listen to as you watch the world crumble before your eyes?”

The album topic could discuss a disastrous time, its sound could fit the vibe of a post apocalyptic setting, or it could be one of your favorite albums that you would want to experience for the last time.

Please provide the artist, album, and an explanation as to why you chose that specific album.

Thank you for reading <3

Here’s the list:
