While it may not be as polished as his critically acclaimed predecessors, it remains the only record in his discography that exhibits a great balance of diverse genres and sounds—far more so than the strictly pop-and-rock-focused Thriller and Bad. HIStory comes close but ultimately falls short of delivering a cohesive listening experience. Nonetheless, the album and some of its tracks are simply too long.
