Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
97

This is basically a blues satire delivered so earnestly that people mistake it as a form of high art. It's not. It's a musical shitpost. That being said, it's also music completely free of any and all restrictions, and that freedom gives the band room to make some of the most imaginative, contorted, and brilliantly absurd music of any period.

Wow, this album is truly a grower... I went from totally not getting it, to enjoying a couple moments but finding it tedious as hell, to now, where I think there isn't a wasted second on the whole album. This album features incredible ambient melodies that are so damn fun to listen to, all hidden beneath these mathematical drum patterns, making for a super relaxing and hypnotic listen. Top notch electronic music. Believe the hype.

Daft Punk - Discovery

Legendary album, and the first piece of music I was ever obsessed with back in elementary school. It's a classic for a reason.

I don't know what I can say about this album that hasn't either already been said before or has already been put into words much better than what I can come up with. It is truly a gorgeous piece of art that I will be permanently indebted to. This album has given me more joy than just about any other piece of music I have ever experienced. The whole album is so life affirming and peaceful, it really feels like it has its own beating heart.

Kraftwerk - Die Mensch∙Maschine

Nah, this album is absolute heat, I don't care what anyone says. Surprisingly detailed and extremely forward thinking electronica from the late 70's that still holds up to this day. The admittedly cheesy vocal effects on a few of these tracks make me like it even more, its like a time capsule of sorts. I can imagine being completely dumbfounded by this when it was first released. I find the timbre of these songs to be extremely refreshing, with a very crisp and clean sound. The songwriting here ... read more

The soundtrack to countless hours spent stoned with friends, studying, playing chess, etc. Perfect Lo-fi hip hop. This music warbles and stutters out of my speakers in such a hypnotic manner. Not much more to be said about this project, it all feels super consistent and engaging without demanding too much attention from me, which is what ambient music like this should do.

Tennyson - Like What

This EP blew my mind when I first heard it in high school, and still holds up when I revisit it. Incredibly well put together and totally unique electronica. This project is so playful and colorful, and also excellently mixed. Luke's musicianship really shines here, as well as his ear for texture. There is not a weak moment, though I wish it were double the length. All around, this is genuinely awe inspiring music coming from a kid with just a keyboard and a laptop.

deadmau5 - while(1<2)

Creep may be Deadmau5's best piece of music, and he has no shortage of highlights. As for the rest of the album, it is a bit of a mixed bag, however the production is remarkably clean across the board, which definitely helps make up for the inconsistency. Certain highlights really place this album above the rest of Joel's discography.

Favorites: Creep, Avaritia, Terrors In My Head, Bleed

Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album

My favorite Aphex Twin project. Mind melting rhythms coupled with beautiful childlike melodies. An unpredictable and always enthralling listen.

Favorite tracks: 4, Peek 82454201, Fingerbib, To Cure A Weakling Child, Yellow Calx

Animal Collective - Sung Tongs

Incredible music. Such a joy to listen to. Introspective and completely absurd at the same time. Capable of provoking intense derealization (visiting friends). Revels in the trivial joys of life: walking through the airport terminal, appreciating snowfall, banging sticks together. As hard as it may be to believe, this album is pure romance, it is in love with life. Animal Collective do not care about your opinion, they are too busy having fun.
