The Growlers' strongest LP by far, and as an avid fan that's a pretty bold statement lol
Highly highly recommend - working with Julian Casablancas was one of the best things these guys did.

A bit weaker than his 'Attractions of the Youth' compilation, '404' is a worthwhile "debut" with more innovation and dynamic song styles than we'd seen from Courtney before this. That comes with a couple of fumbles toward the end of the album, but other tracks make up for the small step down in a big way.

One of the greats - I think it's so impressive the way Barns Courtney pivoted his sound in this EP. In only 4 songs he really further cements himself as a great songwriter with captivating vocals to back it up. It's clear by the rarity of these types of songs in his more recent discography that maybe he prefers more upbeat, dirty alt anthems - or maybe he's smart enough to know when lightning strikes.

I think, as always, AJR has a promising vision of what they could be - one of the great pop groups who innovates in their sound and really creates music FOR their fans. However, also as always, this record falls short of that first half of their vision due to disjointed (and sometimes just annoying) production, though I think they get a far worse rap than they deserve - some of their stuff is just fun.

Great start for a return to form - it sort of feels like Hung at Heart era production which I am all for. Definitely didn’t need a clean version at the end though, they only did that shit to be able to press it on vinyl ðŸ˜

i think we’ve gotten so far into them innovating within their sound that they’re beyond the realistic expectations and are just synthesizing genres and ideas for the sake of it without accomplishing much that is productive or interesting.
the best parts of this album are a retread of things they broke ground on in Clancy, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but that leaves a lot to be desired considering they just released a tremendous record last year and followed it up ... read more

Wow - this is one of the slowest burns an album has ever had for me. I really did not love the vibe switch from 'Can't Wake Up' when the first couple singles came out from this album, but it eventually became my second favorite album of the year and a top 25 album of all time for me. Super unique and engaging songwriting.
