the atmosphere Boards of Canada create in their first LP in over a decade is impressive, and with incredible restraint they accomplish something both wildly satisfying yet somewhat hurtful to listener engagement due to its slow, often non-climactic ambitious 71-minute runtime.

I had a lot of trouble finding anything to grasp, let alone hold onto, in Mitski’s eighth studio album. Ultimately I’m afraid I just do not fall in the demographic of people compelled by her songwriting, which I find lousy at times, and her voice has a frankly annoying cadence to it that I can’t shake.

Towa Bird clearly cracked the formula for viral-worthy genre hits but she doesn’t do enough in “Gentleman” to earn a 37-minute album. This would’ve worked better as an EP half as long that really leans on her strengths displayed in the first few songs and the closing track, not one that dwells on the battle between her soft vocals and the heavy instrumental behind it that really take away from the overall atmosphere and quality as a whole.

Jack Antonoff has taken his signature “sophisti-pop” lyricism that made the first couple of Bleachers albums great (and makes him a strong collaborator with some of pop’s biggest stars) and drawn it out to the point of a tired gimmick, just like in their self-titled fourth LP. There are very few things that strike me about this Bleachers record without much I see myself coming back to.

Sanchez’s talent is on full display here and the songwriting is quite lovely, I’d just like to see what he can come up with if paired with some more dynamic lyricists. That doesn’t stop LOVE, LOVE, LOVE from being an homage to the oldies for the ages.

Definitely calls back to some of his first music, and I love that about this record. Shakey Graves turns back to his analog roots and delivers a paradoxical restlessly restful 36 minutes of Americana ambiance.

The Afterparty is a richly and concisely produced treat for the ears but at only 25 minutes long it doesn’t spend enough time with many of its lovely ideas. The tracks that are fleshed out really rock, and I expect to come back to them specifically, but I can’t see myself spinning the full record again.

The reason it’s surprising how much everyone hates this album is bc it’s a perfect blend of Angles and New Abnormal. Comedown Machine drags a bit toward the end but it’s a convincing show of talent from The Strokes.

Young the Giant continue to evolve their sound after all these years, honing on a very specific tone for this record. Victory Garden is warm and hopeful, and a really easy listen with some great hooks and ideas, even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of some of their best work.
