This album is probably the gateway drug that led to my inevitable music nerdom, and for that it needs it's own special review. While I don't thinks it's perfect, its my favorite album from one of my favorite and most inspiring artists, and I also have a lot of key memories with a handful of tracks on this thing. This album proves you don't need complex riffs or complicated grooves or a good singing voice to make an incredible album. All ... read more
Everything come back around full circle ( cue creepy descending xylophone chromatic scale)
Incredibly short, sweet, and concise album from Jermaine. Also, by far the least cringey bars per verse of any J. Cole album, which I greatly appreciate. I also love how hungry he sounds on this album, which is ironic because he was pushing 40 when this album came out, but he makes it work. Most underrated J. Cole project for sure.
Favorites: The Climb Back, Let Go My Hand.
Least Favorite: Amari
It's Official! JPEGMAFIA has run out of things to rap about.
Literally every song on this album is just jpeg yapping about either A. He has your girl doing tricks on his dih, or B. How all his opps are fake and you can't relate to his lifestyle. Literally every song, I was paying close attention. Drake yapping a whole lot on Iceman but somehow isn't saying anything really at all and also sounds like he is falling asleep on a few of the songs. However, the beats are cool (get it cause Iceman I'm so funny) for the most part, and Drake's ghostwriters were genuinely cooking on some of the songs ( except the one who wrote "Im greater than everyone like shredded cheese" I'm praying that was a Drake original because otherwise yikes). Slightly better than my ... read more
DJ Shadow truly the mozart of old school beats. I love the melancholy melody's and the insane sampled drum fills, and how some of the beats, like Building Steam With a Grain of Salt and Stem/ Long Stem seemlessly morph into something else halfway through the beat. I just wish some of the beats were a little shorter, but that's just me. (Huge Donuts fan) If you like long, epic, old school beat cookery, this is the album for you.
