Where his previous album failed in implementing unique musical ideas with each other, this album succeeds, albeit occasionally in a clumsy way. And, of course, it ends in one of the most beautiful moments in music.

A few interesting ideas spread throughout the project but nothing really comes together. A lot of the songs feel disjointed, as if an idea was dropped for another in the middle of a song ('Hoping Love Will Last' for example). The lack of guitar is also a huge letdown.

Six of the songs don't feel finished, rather more akin to a mish mash of ideas that are haphazardly thrown together. 'Panic Attack' is the only track that feels like it was given the focus and care the band could muster; it's a fantastic listen, best of the album.

Competent but cribs way too much from their contemporaries. It's a shame because the band shines when they are being themselves.
One of my favorite albums from my teenage years. My reactions revisiting this are more tempered than expected. I feel that the major weak point in this album is a lot of the deeper cuts come across as distant and cold in the lyrics. There needed to be more humanizing moments like the fear of progress in 'The Boy in the Bubble' or the heartbreaking vulnerable moment in the second verse of 'Graceland' that cut through the sarcasm and snark.
