Badfinger - Magic Christian Music
91

To be completely honest: each time I listen to this album I love it more. It's just that everything is so well placed here. I mean, their sound is definitely influenced by The Beatles (and their major hit from this album was given to them by Paul McCartney, besides from his and Mal Evans' production), but they still find an originality within their sound, which is really compelling.

While not being an 100% original album because some of the tracks were used on their previous debut ... read more

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk
97

It feels wrong saying that Tusk is Fleetwood Mac's best album ever, hence its beautiful, innovative and groundbreaking predecessor, "Rumours". However, even if it may not be their best, it feels like it (weird, I know, but hear me out).

Here is where the most successful lineup manages to experiment the most. Lindsey Buckingham acts as some kind of leader, because the whole idea of the record was his (influenced by The Beach Boys' "Smile"), and he has the majority ... read more

Ringo Starr - Ringo the 4th

I guess I'm kinda of a sucker for "underrated" records. I thought this LP would be completely bloated, embarassing and dated, but to my surprise, it wasn't. I mean, of course this album is nowhere near perfect, but it has such personality that makes it impossible for me to hate.

In this record, Ringo and his songwriting partner Vini Poncia wrote 6 out of the 10 songs, so you could say this gets a little bit personal for him, as he is not relying on his former Beatles ... read more

Jethro Tull - Catfish Rising
73

I was not expecting to enjoy this LP as much as I did.

So, this album is interesting because it feels like a transition in Tull's sound. There are some hard rock cuts that continue their late 80's run, but there is also a blues and folk rock sound, that reminisce their old style.

As you can see, this album is long (I'm counting the CD version that has 13 tracks). I must say, however, that not every track is good, so there should have been put a little more effort in the track ... read more

The Monkees - The Monkees
70

Heavily Beatles influenced. This is not a spectacular nor a singular record, but it does a great job of introducing the 4 charismatic singers and establishes an upbeat energy.

The Beach Boys - Keepin' the Summer Alive
61

This review was a tough one to make, because I simply did not have anything to say about this album. It sounds average to the bone.

There are some tracks which I really enjoy, like "Oh, Darlin'", "Some Of Your Love", "Livin' With a Heartache" and "Goin' On". However, this feels like a middle of the road album. Not like Carl and The Passions, because this one doesn't show a sign of evolution. It is between their late 70s commercial efforts and 80s ... read more

The Beach Boys - That's Why God Made the Radio

Actually a great finish after the latter run they had.

This album gives the summer vibes on the first side, but then it sings about it slowly fading away, just like Sunflower and Surf's Up but less grandiose. The thing is that this record succeeds in giving the Beach Boys their final project. It's clear their voices have aged, but what about it? They are able to captivate the listener who followed their run.

The final suite, of course, is the highlight, with ponderings about the end of the ... read more

The Beach Boys - Summer in Paradise

Summer in Purgatory more likely.

The Beach Boys - Stars and Stripes Vol. 1
21

Yeah. This is cashgrab at its finest. This record is boring and unnecessary. Why recreate classics that were already perfect by their own?

Out of all of the songs, I would say I really enjoyed one, which was "Don't Worry Baby" and I liked "I Can Hear Music". "Caroline, No" was somewhat decent. But I don't plan on listening any of the other tracks so soon.

The Beach Boys - Still Cruisin'
31

Out of the 10 songs on the album, only 3 were completely new. So, by that you could see that these sessions were not that prolific and they didn't have anything that remarkable to use. And is also important to notice that Brian Wilson almost didn't participate in any recordings of this LP, only in "In My Car" if I'm not mistaken.

The thing is, this album for me is okay when it comes to music, even though it has some awful lyrics and the production is so dated it hurts, it is still ... read more

The Kinks - Everybody's in Show-Biz
83

This is such an interesting album. While being kinda conceptual, the record tackles the topic of touring and how monotous and bad it can get. However, I do consider it as a metalinguistic album, as there are 10 studio tracks and 11 live tracks. So everything they sing about is demonstrated in pratical ways by the end of this LP.

The common feeling that the songs convey is that the touring routine is bad ("Here Comes Yet Another Day"), the food is awful ("Motorway") and the ... read more

The Kinks - Preservation Act 2

The word for this record is PAYOFF. If you listened to Preservation Act 1 and enjoyed you will dig this, especially if you became interested in what would happen with Flash and Mr Black.

So this album starts with the narrator telling us that Mr Black is reuniting people to fight Flash's governement, and that's pretty much it. We follow Tramp in the beginning, who is still not involved in political mattrs and does not advocate by any side, which would be proven wise in the end.
Then, we do get ... read more

The Kinks - Preservation Act 1

Another great concept album by The Kinks. This one is more social and political. It basically covers the story of Flash (and his men), a corrupt politician who is trying to devastate a small, traditional town for money and his own profit. This is the core of the lore.
There are other characters, such as The Tramp, who basically tells the whole story without being in any side; Mr Black, a politician that is opposite to Flash and, there is also The Vicar.

The things is, this record starts with a ... read more

Jethro Tull - Heavy Horses
100

There is no doubt up to this point that Jethro Tull's folk rock trilogy was really prolific and successful.
"Heavy Horses", the second album of that trilogy is another proof that the band was reaching incredible heights, if one wasn't convinced with the previous record "Songs From The Wood".

But what does Heavy Horses offer that makes it so damn great and at the same level (if not better) than SFTW?
First things first, this is somehow a "heavier" folk ... read more

Yoko Ono - Approximately Infinite Universe
90

I just want to say: WOW. First, as a Beatles fan, I'm not one to hop on Yoko's hate train because it is so unfair to her. Having said that, I did not like almost none of her contributions to "Milk and Honey" and "Double Fantasy". I went to that album curious about what Yoko had to offer artistically, because I knew that it was widely considered her best album. And oh boy, it certainly is a great album.

The first topic I'd like to tackle is her voice. I'm not a fan of her ... read more

The Beach Boys - All Summer Long
80

This record is great! The best The Beach Boys had made up to that point.

"I Get Around" is a perfect track, "All Summer Long" is super enjoyable and uplifting, "Hushabye" has some melodies that, oh boy. Even the car track "Little Honda" seems so much interesting than what they did in previous albums. "We'll Run Away" is really beautiful and shows what would come after, with Brian Wilson adopting this songwriting style. "Carl's Big ... read more

The Beach Boys - Surfin' U.S.A.
51

This record is ok, I guess. It has some great songs. "Surfin' U.S.A." is a classic, "Farmer's Daughter" sounds a little bit generic harmony-wise, but it is still enjoyable. "Lonely Sea" shows the ongoing artistic growth Brian Wilson was having, a great and mature ballad, even if minimalistic. "Shut Down" is also creative, and would lead the themes they would sing about. However, this still feels like they were having some good ideas but were incapable ... read more

The Beach Boys - Shut Down Volume 2
59

This one is pretty much an improvement. They have incredible songs such as "Don't Worry Baby", "Warmth of The Sun" and the enjoyable "Fun, Fun, Fun". However, this does not feel like a full album experience, as you get a Carl x Mike roast in the middle of the album and Dennis' drum solo (only this) in one song, besides of other out of the place instrumental. There are also a boring car song: "This Car of Mine". But I do consider it as a improvement ... read more

The Beach Boys - Little Deuce Coupe
52

Bad ending: The Beach Boys like cars and they made an album about it.

Jokes aside, this album is interesting for being a "concept album" and it has some good songs (I'd say the first 7 songs of the album). It is indeed repetitive, as you'll get car themed songs for almost all of the record. The thing that also is kinda meh about it is that they just reused songs like "Little Deuce Coupe", "409", "Shut Down" and "Our Car Club" (3 of these 4 are ... read more

The Beach Boys - The Beach Boys

"Getcha Back" is great, "It's Gettin' Late" is enjoyable. The rest of the album though... even with elite guests such as Ringo Starr and Stevie Wonder, the album lacks personality and it just seems like an 80s band trying to cover old Beach Boys records. To be fair, "Crack At Your Love" and "Maybe I Don't Know" are not as bad, they are somewhat decent and interesting, but even if they begin with a good idea, it all seems to drag throughout the rest of the ... read more
