The Beach Boys - Surfin' Safari
55

Their first album has some solid ideas, some of which would pioneer a genre, but everything sounds so demo-ish here with a bad mix, that idk. "Surfin' Safari" is great, "409" is creative, "Little Miss America" showcases some of their ealy harmony work which is also good, "Surfin'" is so important to their discography, but the star for me here is "Heads You Win - Tails I lose": a gambling/deciding things on flipping coins song with a metaphor for ... read more

Okay, so for this album Brian has returned on taking lead of the creative decisions and production. This album is half covers/half originals, so there is not much going on in terms of originality. There are some songs which I love, such as "It's OK.", "Had To Phone Ya", the "Talk To Me" part of the cover, "In The Still Of The Night" and "Just Once In My Life", but oh boy, are there some bloated tracks. To be completely honest, this album seems ... read more

The Beach Boys - Surfer Girl

Probably the most maturity the Beach Boys would showcase til' "All Summer Long". There are some great, beautiful and intricate songs such as "Surfer Girl" and "In My Room". Some others like "The Surfer Moon" and "Hawaii" show how their sound was evolving and how Brian Wilson was a production genius. However, there are some really tough tracks ("Our Car Club" I'm looking at you). They continue with the surfer and car themes, which ... read more

The Beach Boys - Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)

This is probably my favorite Beach Boys record pre-Pet Sounds (Today! makes a strong competition, but I still lean to Summer Days and Summer Nights! a little bit more). First thing is: this record has 2 great classics BB hits, which are "Help Me, Rhonda" and "California Girls". The other thing is, you do get "standard" love songs (like "The Girl From New York City", "Then I Kissed Her", "You're So Good To Me"), but they are so ... read more

So, I went to listen this record thinking I'd get one of the worst BB albums ever. However, it's not that bad. "Good Timin'" is a great song, classic Beach Boys style with the harmonies, "Lady Lynda" is also a great love song that has the right amount of energy. You do get some boring, sleepy songs though; such as "Full Sail", "Goin' South". And also some songs that have great moments on it and are different sonically but manage to be repetitive in some ... read more

The Beach Boys - M.I.U. Album

This album is so generic and it's so standard that it is pretty much it. "She's Got Rhythm" is great and uplifting, "Come Go With Me" is also really good and catchy, "My Diane" is haunting and beautiful and "Match Point of Our Love" is ok. Other than that, the album is bland, with not much personality. And that is much worse if you consider the Beach Boys' discography: the past album was the incredible Brian Wilson-led "Love You". However, I ... read more

I was a little bit relcutant going into this project because the late 70's Beach Boys were something I wasn't familiar of or didn't want to be. However, recently I saw so many people praise this project and I decided to give it a shot. It is really good. First thing that makes this album more interesting than some others is that Brian Wilson was back to being the producer (Brian's Back!), and the material is mostly written by him. Additionally, the synth-pop style is refreshing and highlight ... read more

Paul McCartney - New

Really concise album. Production is great, it's not very different than what Paul usually does, but it also has touches of electronic pop, which makes it stand out. There are some bops here, such as "Save Us", "Alligator", "Queenie Eye" and "New". Really good album from Paul.

Paul McCartney - Egypt Station
74

Really good album from Paul. This album is not as focused thematically as others, but I guess the cover and everything makes it clear. You get some of Paul's more impressive and different songs such as "Back In Brazil" and "Despite Repeated Warnings", which I love. Also the melancholic piece "I Don't Know", that introduces the album so well. There are the electronic pop sounding songs (specially "Fuh You", which I enjoy but understand who don't as well). ... read more

Paul McCartney - Press to Play

Yeah, this one is not it. I feel that listening to this record made me appreciate "Flower In The Dirt" a bit more. I feel as though Paul had lots of great ideas and themes to be explored, but in doing so with this production, it didn't fit. Many songs here are unusual for Paul and may have worked with another approach. However, I do not think this album is totally bad; there are highlights such as "Talk More Talk" that is completely different from anything Paul has ever ... read more

I mean, this album has some bops on it: "My Brave Face" is one of Paul's best. "Motor of Love" is beautiful, "That Day is Done" is catchy and "How Many People" is great. Paul's vocals are also really good. However, the main issue I have with this album is that the production sounds a little too plastic. While the lyrics try (and most of the times they do achieve) to be more sentimental, I think this style of production kind of get in the way of Paul's ... read more

Paul McCartney - McCartney III

This is such a delightful album. And I mean that specially because Paul is still rocking and excited to make great music. As a McCartney record, he recorded and produced it all by himself, which is amazing. You do get tracks that resemble Beatles, such as "Seize The Day" and "Lavatory Lil"; but you also get some unusual Paul tracks, such as "Deep Deep Feeling". Also you get sort of a RAM Paul with "Winter Bird/When Winter Comes". And what an amazing ... read more

Okay, this album is starting to grow on me a little bit. This record within Paul's dicography comes to me as a little bit disappointing, as he was coming back to his solo carreer after an incredible run with the Wings. But what he did here is completely different than anything before. At the same time I think some tracks are not as good as they could be and sometimes they get really annoying; on the other hand, this album truly showcases Paul's creativity, personality and vision; as this LP is ... read more

So I got into this album more curious than anything, cause almost all of the reviews I saw were negative, or mixed. But boy, was I pleasantly surprised. This album is gorgeous. It has some experimental sounds (for Paul's recent run, at least), a heavy bass sound and some screaming performances, at times. The thing is, this album perfectly encapsulates dealing with grief and falling in love again. It kinda tells a story. And some of Macca's best lyrics in times are there, such as "From a ... read more

Tigers Jaw - Two Worlds

Okay, this is a good record. I wouldn't say it is as good as the self-titled LP that came before or "Charmer" that came after, but it is good. You do get some bangers and different-sounding songs such as "Return". The strongest point in this album may be its concept (it is not a concept album, to be clear) and lyrics. I do think that the lyrics are a mix of different themes and approaches and some of their already-known themes.
There is a instrumental break in ... read more

This record is so good. First thing is: the riffs are amazing! Once I started listening I was really surprised of how intricate the melodies and instrumentantion were.
Some changes regarding their last 2 LPs were made, surely. It is the last project that 3 members of the band participated as well. The album has no totally acoustic songs; sure it has some slower songs like "Divide", but not totally acoustic as the band used to do. It also started featuring Brianna on lead vocals, which ... read more

This record has had so much impact for me, and it still is one of my favorites to this day. It was probably the first emo album I've heard. I think that everything that made Tigers Jaw great is in this album. You have super loud, noisy electric guitar performances, the contrast between Adam and Ben's singing, which serves the record super well, Brianna's back vocals, the acoustic songs that are gorgeous and some other great things (I wouldn't be able to list all of them).
"The Sun" is ... read more

It is okay and interesting in some parts. This album does not have the best sound quality, but I think the minimalist lyrics and demo-sounding album has its charm. However, it serves mainly as a clear introduction to the band than as a full-lenght LP. This album is more folk-sounding than some of their late projects would be.
Some songs, such as "Okay Paddy", "Heat" and "The Sun" would be used (and improved, IMO) in their next self-titled LP "Tigers ... read more

The Kinks - Schoolboys in Disgrace

I liked it. I got the feeling that this record has a different way of presenting the situation as the two "Preservation" LPs did before. The first 3 tracks serve as an intro to understand where the character is in, to then get into the romance with the "naughty girl" (as she is referred in the songs) in tracks such as "The First Time We Fall In Love" and "I'm in Disgrace". So the concept starts as a generic or non-specific story. The main character is ... read more

Paul McCartney - Pipes of Peace

I tried listening to that album for a couple times now, but only recently I was able to go through the whole thing. Even though the album is not bad at all, some songs are kinda boring, but what mostly throws me off is the 80s sound this album has. Not because I dislike the 80s sonority, I do like it; but, in my opinion, some songs on the album sound so cheesy and generic. Paul's vocals, however, are on point and are probably the biggest pro this record has. It would have matched another ... read more
