The Kinks - Sleepwalker
87

Wow! That album is so overlooked and ignored within Kinks' discography that I thought that it would be awful. It was for my surprise, however, that this album is really consistent and great! There are some amazing tunes, such as "Life On The Road", "Sleepwalker" and "Life Goes On". This album has a melancholy vibe, but also a hope for things to get better. By using the "night" metaphor throughout the whole album ("Sleepwalker", "Sleepless ... read more

The Kinks - Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One
85

So I recently heard this album again to refresh my memory and it is still pretty good! I wouldn't put it as being a "Village Green" or "Arthur...", but it is really solid. The whole record explores the concept of the capitalism and how the music business work. With a lot of irony, you can see how funny and critical The Kinks could be. I still think some songs are kind of filler. They are good, non-skippable, but they throw me off a bit of the concept. However, I it's a great ... read more

The Kinks - Soap Opera
68

Okay, this is kind of a hard review for me to make. When I first heard this album, I was really delighted by the cover. So, I got to hear it and the concept is really different song-wise ( you would probably see this at a Soap Opera, duh). It was kind of a shock to me when I saw how low the scores for this record were. I mean, I don't think it's a top-tier album, but it has lots of great feats.

Firstly, as I said before, the concept is well put together and you experience the life of ... read more

The Kinks - Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)
100

This is a classic that is often overlooked, sadly. All of the album sounds so concise, the concept is well-explored and you get some of The Kinks' best songs, such as "Victoria", "Drivin'" and "Australia". It gets you excited the whole time, the lyrics are sharp, well-thought, ironic and critic. The british landscape becomes really visible and there is no skippable tracks. The instrumentation is breathtaking. A great concept album.

The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
100

This is a marvellous pop-rock album. All of the melodies are catchy, simple but also sound so intricate together. There are lots of hits, such as "A Hard Day's Night", "If I Fell", "And I Love Her", "Can't Buy Me Love". You get some of their best material so far at that point. It's a record that gets you totally entertained. It is fun, short and totally essential!

Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery
100

This is one of the best Jethro Tull's albums ever. You have a concept of the Minstrel singing from the Gallery with his band, and the sonority fits this concept really well. There are emotional songs like "Requiem", "One White Duck/010 = Nothing At All" that make the album even better than it is. It's not only a concept record, it has so much emotion tied into it that you feel immersed right away. The medley "Baker St. Muse" is simply beautiful and has great ... read more

Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town
100

This was my first Bruce Springsteen album ever. I did not know what to expect, besides his raspy voice. It was for my total surprise that this album was amazing! The lyrics are great, well-written and thoughtful and the instrumentation in every track makes you wanna move. The themes are thematically conected, as the title indicates; they are dark, sad songs. A couple standouts for me are: "Badlands", "Adam Raised a Cain", "Candy's Room" and "Streets of ... read more

Jethro Tull - A

I really enjoy this album. I do not like every track, that's why is not rated thaaat high. Some songs like "Protect and Survive", "Batteries Are Not Included", "Uniform" are really repetitive and boring to me, so I do not like their addition on the album. However, the other songs for me are really great tunes and they rank high in Tull's catalogue. The first side of the LP is amazing, the second one not so good though.

Jethro Tull - Under Wraps
46

This is not a good album, at all. However, I do not think it's as bad as it is said to be. Of course you have some repetitive, mind-numbing songs, such as "Saboteur", "Heat". But you do get some of the best electronic songs by Tull, like: "Lap of Luxury", "Under Wraps #1", "European Legacy" and "Later, That Same Evening". If this was an EP or a short album with only those songs and "Under Wraps #2", it would rank so much ... read more

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
100

Well, everybody knows at this point that Pet Sounds is a classic. There are lots of things to say about this LP that make it standout. The making, the change of direction led by Brian Wilson and all that make the album more amazing than it already is. The vocals and backing vocals are in great shape (no pun intended), really shows us how good they were at harmonizing. It gets to the point when the melodies make you really emotional. You have hits, such as the memorable "Wouldn't It Be ... read more

Paul McCartney & Linda McCartney - Ram
100

Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney teamed up together to make this masterpiece. The whole album has a similar sonority, but none of the tracks seem repetitive, even there being a reprise. It is all tied up together well, as well as it could be. This LP was criticized at the time it was released, but, nowadays you can see the genius of Paul in that record. The instrumentation, vocals, all resemble to something similar to indie rock/pop nowadays. Paul was doing it in 1971, which never ceases to ... read more

George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
100

This is a masterpiece. You have George showing that he was a prolific writer, that he had a great team of musicians and that he was a superb musician as well. Most of the album consists in amazing, iconic songs, such as "My Sweet Lord" and "What Is Life". The record sends shivers down my spine when I listen to "Hear Me Lord". The songs are great, George's singing and playing is great. It was really important for George the way this album was received, because it ... read more

David Bowie - Low
99

This album always gets me in a dilemma if I should give it a 100 rating, because it is that good. It's dense, concise and what I call "minimalist". It has tied up songs, they have a similar sonority, not so many lyrics, but you get the point of the songs. I also think this record holds some of Bowie's most thoughtful song titles and concepts. It completely turned him onto a different direction from his previous works. The instrumental tracks build up a feeling you can't escape. There ... read more

Jethro Tull - Aqualung
100

This is a masterpiece. It could be argued that is not their best work, hence "Thick As A Brick", "Songs From The Wood", "Minstrel", but if definitely sits in the upper shelf of their albums. The opening riff itself is purely amazing. Every track carries a lot of energy, the songwriting is really impressive and it has some of the most impressive instrumentation from the band. And, if the album seems too heavy, you have little acoustic pieces, such as "Cheap Day ... read more

Jethro Tull - Benefit
77

Even though it is regarded highly for some Tull fans, this album for me is not that amazing. I mean, the highs were pretty high, such as "With You There to Help Me", "Nothing to Say", "To Cry You a Song", and the singer-songwriter style in "For Michael Collins, Jeffrey and Me" is stellar and would precede, in a way, some tracks in Aqualung. However, even though I enjoy most of the album, I think the other tracks are somewhat forgettable. They are mostly ... read more

Jethro Tull - Stand Up
96

Probably one of my favorite albums from Jethro Tull (and of OAT), their second album shows how well Martin Barre fit the band, and how their sound had become (and was becoming) really unique. Almost every track is a standout, but Bourée shows how different they were, and that they had a lot to offer. The bass in this album is MAGNIFICENT. Definitely a classic. Amazing.

Jethro Tull - This Was
68

The first Jethro Tull album is not a masterpiece as some of their work affterwards would be, but it is a pleasant album. You have a couple standout tracks such as "My Sunday Feeling", "Beggar's Farm", "A Song For Jeffrey", but the instrumental tracks are not much of a highlight. Their sound is not quite the remarkable sound the band would get in future works, but it is curious, at least, to know how Jethro Tull would be in blues-rock. If you enjoy Tull, be sure to ... read more

Jethro Tull - A Passion Play
76

Even though the album is not as good as its antecessor "Thick As Brick", the story is far more sinister and dark. I must admit that it's a hard album to get into, as I didn't like when I first heard it. In fact, I didn't understand most of what I was listening. However, if you pay attention to the lyrics and the instrumentation, you'll find it compelling. It basically tells the story about an individual named "Ronnie Pilgrim", who died and watches his funeral from up above, ... read more
