I was going into this album with the impression that I wouldn’t love it for some Reese but I was dead wrong. Obviously a bit too long but loaded with bangers.
So many great fun riffs with such emotive and aggressive vocals over them but a lot of songs do end up sounding the same. That being said it’s still a good album and a cut above anything else I’ve heard that’s in a similar field.
Absolutely face melting stuff but so emotionally charged. The vocals and lyrics are so tortured probably because they are so incredibly forward and don’t really leave much room for interpretation which I really love, especially on the song ‘Anywhere’ which for me is the most brutal lyrically. The riffs are really harsh and sludgy but really rememberable. Great from back to front like genuinely so so amazing.
Still a good album but by his standards I feel like he can do better. The vulgar lyrics have just lost some of their oomph and quite a few passages in the first half of the album don’t really go anywhere for me. That being said the instrumental side of this album is still the main takeaway and absolutely mind blowing at times. Just feel like it’s not as good as the black midi work that came before it. Still an enjoyable listen tho.
Fuck me this album is hard hitting, emotional, angry, sad and a whole pot of emotions which come to several boiling points. Bass lines are so subtle but beautiful and one of my personal favourite aspects of this album along with obviously great vocals and vivid lyricism from Mitski. The sound does maintain very similar throughout the album which holds it back slightly but at only 30 minute run time, it’s not that much of an issue.
