Brian Brown - Journey
73

Nice chill, jazzy ,and almost Lo-fi hip-hop sounding instrumentals, nice lyrics, nice chill vibe and nice singing from features. Reminds me a lot of Isaiah Rashad's "Cilvia Demo". There were no awful songs, only one was weaker to me which was "Vanilla". The length of the album (10 tracks) was best for this kind of an album.

Childish Gambino - 3.15.20
79

I remember when this was unreleased and Donald had been livestreaming it on his website. Upon that listen, I had really enjoyed it but I didn't realise how long some of the songs were. The slight instrumental switches didn't help them from feeling like a drag on my listens after release. I also didn't enjoy how most of the songs ended with near to dead air, it was unnecessary to me. Anyway, I really like the groovy vibes Donald Glover can give. All the songs are nice really except for ... read more

D Smoke - Black Habits
71

Even though I rarely come back to this album, it was alright, especially for D Smoke's first proper studio album. The instrumentals were alright. Nothing different but they were nice to listen to for the most part. This excludes "Gaspar Yanga" as it sounded too bland and the sample didn’t help either. The song was more of an entertainment song, even down to the lyrics. Some songs should have been taken out; the album dragged on for too long with the last couple of songs just ... read more

Dominic Fike - What Could Possibly Go Wrong
40

What Could Possibly Go Wrong? This whole album apparently. It’s nothing above meh.

Lyrics were ok, for cheesy Indie-Pop anyway. I’ll commend Dominic Fike for having some different sounding instrumentals throughout the album as if he stuck to one style, it would have been way more boring. The instrumentals are still quite basic though, bland Hollister/Indie retail shop music if you will. His vocals weren’t enough for me to save this album either. The vocal effects put on his ... read more

Jay Electronica - A Written Testimony
72

This was certainly good but not worth such a long wait.
I liked all the instrumentals apart from the one for “Ezekiel’s Wheel” and “Flux Capacitor” but that’s only 2 out of 10. The stock sound effects that appeared in some songs were a weird choice. Instrumentals had a more underground abstract sound which I liked. There was good lyricism and nice storytelling on here for sure. They definitely didn’t hold back on their vocabulary. I do agree that if ... read more

Conway the Machine - From King to a GOD
NR

This was good, but nothing to run home about.

The production was really good. There was a mixture of “grimey” boom-bap sounding instrumentals with instrumentals that were more relaxed in comparison. My least favourite would be the one for “Spurs 3” and that’s only because of the odd chime sounds and having to hear that for 4 minutes straight. Could have done without the dolphin laughs throughout the project too. Other than that I have no complaints and liked them ... read more

Denzel Curry & Kenny Beats - UNLOCKED
83

I’ve had this project on repeat ever since it came out in February!

Kenny produced some great instrumentals. They were hard hitting whilst being unique. Another thing about the instrumentals is that they gave an old-school boom-bap/comic book vibe, even down to the cover art. It was inspired by the cover for 1994 album “Stress: The Extinction Agenda”. It’s clear what Kenny and Denzel were going for and they achieved it for sure. The actual length of the project was just ... read more

Disclosure - ENERGY
65

These instrumentals are nice to listen to but some of them were kind of boring as they gave me a feeling of “I’ve heard this before”. I would say “Lavender”, “Ce n’est pas”, and “Get Close” are some examples of this. Quite generic and could probably be found on any dance compilation CD. Despite that, they do their job of being catchy and being good to dance to.

I like how Disclosure used a mixture of vocalists, new generation and old ... read more

NIKI - Moonchild
NR

This album really shows how versatile NIKI is. All instrumentals take a different direction/style and are done well. This can be seen in the three-track run “Nightcrawlers”, “Selene” and “Tide” as she goes from a trap sounding beat on “Nightcrawlers” to a funky sound on “Selene”, and a dark and eerie sound on “Tide”. She really did it all on this album. Even NIKI herself vocally as she does a bit of rapping on the song ... read more

Ovrkast. - Try Again
75

This is definitely the better of the 2020 rap projects I've listened to that have Lo-fi beats and relaxed delivery. Lo-fi beats in general can sometimes get boring and sound quite similar to each other but the beats on this project are actually quite creative and unique. I like how this project can be chill whilst not having too elementary of lyrics and stay interesting. Elementary lyrics aren't always a bad thing, but having good lyrics added value to these songs for sure. The length of the ... read more

Leven Kali - HIGHTIDE
60

Leven Kali brought enjoyable, smooth, and groovy vibes with this album. This album isn’t anything too amazing I do have to admit, but it is a nice listen and some songs are a good mood booster. It’s not something I found myself running back to since it came out, but you won’t regret putting a couple songs in your playlist and stumbling across them on shuffle. The length of the album itself is reasonable as if it were any longer it would have been a real drag. Some ... read more

Justin Bieber - Changes
37

Justin Drew Bieber. What was this? I was right to put this album on hold for the duration that I did.

Going through this album was torture with how similar and uninteresting the songs were. The album only got interesting in the last quarter excluding that shameful Yummy remix. I feel this is an easy fix by taking out most of the trap beat songs as they’re all pretty much the same and also mixing up the order of the track list so you're not hearing the same song 10 times in a row. In the ... read more

Aminé - Limbo
70

I don’t think it’s Aminé’s year like he claimed but this album was decent.

There were some painfully basic and generic pop-rap songs on here such as “Can’t Decide”, “Compensating” that are for the radio. “Can’t Decide” did have nice singing. Lyrics in these songs stated were quite basic though, but that is to be expected as these songs are more for fun and use catchiness as their selling point. “Riri” and ... read more

Tkay Maidza - Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 2
76

I am really impressed with how versatile she is.

I do think I slightly prefer her singing to her rapping, but she had good flows on here. Part of being versatile to me is that you can pull off the different styles you do at good quality, and she did that. “My Flowers” was a nice song to start the EP off with. Some songs had typical and kind of predictable beats such as “Shook”, “Awake”, and “Grasshopper”, but they are kept interesting with ... read more

Rich Brian - 1999
50

Rich Brian was definitely experimental on here with some songs having more of a pop influence to other songs having a more bass boosted trap beat influence. I found the rap beats to be quite generic but hearing Brian experiment with his voice makes up for it a bit.

Brian's vocals on here were pretty good with the exception of the ones on "Don't Care". I got a kind of Trippie Redd vibe from it. Not a big fan.

Brian sounded like he was influenced by some other artists too. On ... read more

VIC MENSA - V Tape
44

Definitely an improvement from the last I heard of Vic.

Some of these instrumentals were quite boring for me. Instrumentals for "VENDETTA", "DIRT ON MY NAME", and "XGAMES" sound like they came from a Drake/Big Sean starter pack. "2HONEST" was probably the worse instrumental though, I don't get where he was going with that. It was more creative though so I'll give it to him I guess. The singing talents on here didn't do it for me and none of them suited ... read more

Pyramid Vritra - Sonar
61

This piece was slightly disappointing but ok.

Most of the instrumentals were quite creative. Some were just typical Lo-fi beats, still fine though. The elements of some songs didn't really blend well, especially in "NEURONS", and "OUTRO". I also didn't enjoy the glitching effect in "PULL" and "AIR RAID", they were very painful to listen to. The vocals also seem to get drowned out by the instrumentals in some songs as the delivery is very sleepy and the ... read more

IDK - IDK & FRIENDS 2 (Basketball County Soundtrack)
45

This album is mid to be honest. Nothing new being said, no new or interesting topics, just the same old from generic trap.

In the song "RILEY" I found that the piano and the beat didn't match at all. XanMan's bars were weak. He had big energy though I'll give him that.

Bars such as "blue like a Smurf" or "nice twins like Tamera" and "she ride dick like Doja" are so overdone, but they get the point across I guess.

The vocals at the end of "Square ... read more

Big Sean - Detroit 2
55

Way too long for starters! There is no need for this many tracks, especially from Big Sean.

This album has a lot of trap beats that are quite generic in my opinion. Some of these are so generic they sound like they're from YouTube. Of course they sound great through headphones or speakers but, they are not creative or exciting.

Big Sean should refrain from singing and should instead get more male singers in for any male singing parts he wants done. Big Sean struggling to hit notes in ... read more
